ruby on rails sucks. i hate it and i hate David Heinemeier Hansson. and i also hate lighttpd. and fast-cgi. **** me for taking on management of a clusterfuck of a project that runs on ruby on rails.

LOL! I find Ruby to be very zen. If you get frustrated, it punishes you.

Few use Mongrel anymore. Most are on Passenger. I always liked Nginx, myself. (Pronounced Engine-ex). Very fast and light.

 

having never coded in ruby... what does it lack?
After the cobbled together mess that is C++, almost anything looks better.

My favorite language is still any assembly language (although, assembly for the VAX was pretty sweet).

 

i code websites in php and backend in python. never had a problem with it and my new framework is coming out soon as open source.

 

If you think c++ is a cobbled mess then you're bad at it. Too many peeps not spacing and commenting their code....

Also, plenty of compilers are nearly on par with the best assembly coders. Why would I waste time writing assembly when I can compile c++, then go back and optimize the assembly afterward? Its at least 2x as fast.
