SE (Atlanta) Dyno Day?

I'd like to do this before the heat arrives and before my transmission grenades. What's the odds of doing this in the next month with reasonable participation? I know some of y'all :D are getting close to putting the cars on the ground - right?

Ben 04-23-2007 07:16 PM

I'm down for the dyno day. Gotta few new things to install first though :D
If I could recommend a dyno, BPM in Sugar Hill has an awesome facility with a dynojet in its own heavily air conditioned room. Other places are fine too.

Maybe a Saturday or three before the dyno day we could also hook up at my dad's shop and get some tweaking done. Ben (Atlanta93LE) has a lot of turbo bits that would look good on his car.

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 07:27 PM

I like the way you think, Ben ;)

m2cupcar 04-23-2007 07:29 PM

So you'd be ready mid-May? What kind of deal should would wager with "the shop" based on turn-out? I know Ron at BPM so I'm sure he'd work with us. Some racers might have an issue with sunbelt right next door- since they don't have a sunbelt engine. We'll see.

Philip 04-23-2007 07:31 PM

hrm tickets to ATL are cheap, can I come watch your puny cars run? :fawk:

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 07:53 PM

I think mid-May would be pushing it for me. More realistically, I'm thinking I'll be more like mid-June, and it might be pretty hot by then. So, unless I really get cracking, you guys should plan on me not having a car there.

Ben 04-23-2007 07:58 PM

A few of us could have you boosting before the sun sets on a Saturday...

noticed all the for sale stuff....what's the plan?

GTS Miata 04-23-2007 08:18 PM

I might be interested to check out my megasquirt tune. Depends on how long it takes me to get it put together.

Hard not to notice, it's like I diarrheaed on the for sale section. I'm selling some parts off the miata I just purchased to off set its purchase price.

The standard "group" rate seems to be $50 for 3 pulls, but a bit lax if someone needs to take an extra pull or needs to get off the dyno for some tweaks between pulls. IIRC BPM charged me $150 for an hour, but I went 20 minutes over and took 25 or so pulls and they didn't charge extra. They were real cool.

m2cupcar 04-23-2007 08:59 PM

What? The GTO isn't quick enough to drive here? ;)
It would be cool to get this going May 12 - ya know - North vs. South.

Ben93LE - what's your "to do" list look like?

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 09:09 PM

Well, I'll start with what is already done:

bipes
boost gauge
fmu

Things I can get done quick before final install committal:

get injectors cleaned and installed w/ diy dual-feed rail (I have an extra rail)
install Pierburg

So that leaves:

install bung on dp for wideband
actual turbo/mani/dp install
adjust rad. and squeeze in intercooler for quick over-the-rad setup (2" pipes)
route bov
tap pan
install torsen setup
tune

not worth it when airline tix are like 180

m2cupcar 04-23-2007 09:39 PM

I drove a viper from ATL to Las Vegas... I would have rather flown.

Ben- I guess this is your DD? I was up in duluth/alpharetta Sunday welding up an exhaust for an ITA Miata- could have done your O2 bung then (you're up there right?).

Philip 04-23-2007 09:46 PM

I don't like driving. Car only has 10k on it and I'm not wrapping up another 2400 by driving it there when it won't even be enjoyable.

I'll kick around going :dunno:

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 09:54 PM

Nope, not my DD. I'm in ugly-ass Smyrna.

m2cupcar 04-23-2007 10:22 PM

So you're just tight on time...? Mine sat for a year before I even got it up on stands. :hsugh:

Hopefully we'll some interest after the thread's "matured". I was thinking there were a few members around here. I know Cjernigan comes thru ATL on ocassion. Who else? Hello?:ughug:

cjernigan 04-23-2007 10:28 PM

I've been watching this thread. I'd come on down but I go back to Alaska on May 10th for 4 months and the car is going into storage. If it was in the fall or something I'd be down but I can't make it this time around. Last final exam is May 4th. Travel to Florida on May 5th. Come back to TN, fly to Alaska on the 10th to start operating for AIC doing some good ol' road construction for the summer.

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 10:30 PM

Well, not just the time. I also don't have the tools to tap the pan, and I've been taking my sweet time accumulating parts when the deals come up.

Ben 04-23-2007 11:30 PM

You can do the injectors/rail at any time. No reason why you can't get boosting on your 205s if that's what you have now.

You should get the bung welded on the dp before installing it, otherwise, you'll just end up pulling it off again later.

We should be able to get the turbo hard parts installed (mani, turbo, dp, charge pipes, fmic) in a day.

Atlanta93LE 04-23-2007 11:33 PM

That's kinda what I've been figuring. That tech edge...it's a standard bosch-type o2 sensor, so the bung is nothing special, right?

Ben 04-23-2007 11:40 PM

Yeah, it's just a Bosch sensor.

erkinatl 04-26-2007 10:55 PM

somebody please pick a date :)

I will go.

m2cupcar 04-26-2007 11:50 PM

I want to do it May 12th - same as the NE. There's two "for sures" on this forum (you'd make 3), one maybe. I've got a Spec, supercharged and IRTB Miata ready to go. Just wanted more from here... maybe there's not that many in ATL... thought there was. :dunno:

Ben 04-27-2007 08:35 AM

Heh glad you bumped this thread up.

I have a big ass SnapOn MIG. Need to get wire, do you know where I can pick some up locally? Anyone care to show me how to use it? Of course, you'd be welcome to use my lift and tools while you're over. I have some new exhuast stuff ready to go on that will need to be welded (midpipe to muffler). Also othe Ben (93LE) needs a bung welded to his exhaust.

I'll be ready to dyno shortly after getting the exhuast hung.

m2cupcar 04-27-2007 09:29 AM

damn Ben... Do you run some kind of auto industrial salvage yard? The toys never stop coming! ;) You can pick up cheap wire at Northern, Harbor Freight. I got my CO2 tank and gas from PyeBarker (the number works, can't remember if they changed their name or not). Lots of welding supplies up that way though- try local.google.com.

I'm headed over to TGprix today to visit a track event in progress. Gotta work this weekend (and finish building a swing set). Then Monday I'm off to play. Aren't you near Balanced Performance? I might be able to convince my visitor to drive up that way. - rob

erkinatl 04-27-2007 10:21 AM

I'll need to know where this place is so I can get directions also will need to know time. :)

If so, we should do a who has more cumulative HP and who has the most blown engines. :gay:

Side note: Next year we should do a neutral ground East Coast Dyno Day! :bigtu:

Atlanta93LE 04-27-2007 10:35 AM

Ben, if you don't have one local and don't want to pay shipping, I have a Northern and Harbor Freight local to me, and I can pick up some wire for ya, if you let me know how much you're looking for. I was thinking about heading over to HF tonight anyway.

m2cupcar 04-27-2007 10:37 AM

I haven't contacted a dyno shop yet, though dyno lab has the most votes of interest. I will contact the shop next week to firm things up, then post details here.

Hmmm cumulative? With a sc, two NAs and three turbos... We don't stand much of chance. Unless we're talking top 3. ;) It's not my engine I'm worried about... my trans sounds like a howling pack of dogs. I don't think it's any coincidence that the better my tune got, the louder my trans got. That's why I'm itching to get to the dyno- I can't drive the car w/o nailing the throttle. :skid: Definitely will be at 18psi for the dyno run... maybe more. FE3s are dropping in price. That's a deal for a brutally strong 2.0L. I guess everybody who wants one, has one.

East coast meet would be kewl. By then Philip should have all kinds of sponsor dollars. :hahano:

Atlanta93LE 04-27-2007 10:45 AM

Hey Rob, you've got the red interior...have you found anything that really cleans all your red bits, or are yours all a slightly different shade as well? Also, have you figured out a trick for cleaning the black top of the dash without making it all sticky and goopey?

m2cupcar 04-27-2007 10:58 AM

Haven't got around to cleaning anything inside. My seats are aftermarket and they're now looking a little rough. So's the carpet (rough and aftermarket) and it bleaches out regularly so I have to redye it. Not pretty like it was ten years ago when I did the swap.

There's a Harbor Freight at Beaver Ruin- right at lawerenceville hwy- best deal on MIG wire IMO.

m2cupcar 04-30-2007 10:06 AM

I'm going to try and schedule a shop this week. Please confirm attendance. We have a whopping three members in the ATL:

Ben (the original)
ERKINATL
Rob

Guys- shoot me an email with contact info.

Anybody else?

Ben 04-30-2007 10:14 AM

Sweet, I'm going to be right around the corner from there! Thanks

Ben,
Thanks for the offer, had I seen it before today, I would have taken you up.

Anyway, off to HF, gotta get an exahust welded :x:

Ben 04-30-2007 10:09 PM

Woo hoo, picked up MIG wire today! Unfortunately, the smallest quantity HF had in the bigger spool size was 10 lbs ($47.00). Didn't have time to play today, hopefully tomorrow.

So you local guys, if you need something welded, I may not have skills but I have tools!

Thanks again for the heads up Rob.

GTS Miata 04-30-2007 10:22 PM

I won't be ready for the rollers any time soon...:td:

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 09:16 AM

Even if you ATL guys don't want to roll, still come by and hang out. I'm calling today and trying to get things set up. Make sure you get your mother's day shopping done on Friday. ;)

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 01:33 PM

Confirmed

:bigtu:
We're on at DynoLab Saturday, May 12, 9am. Deal is $50 (cash/visa/mastercard) for three runs. IF you want more dyno time for making changes/tuning, then you'll run at the end of the group. Please let me know if needing more time is a possibility for you. ALSO - if you are NO SHOW, let me know ASAP so I can let somebody else in on your spot. Here's the current participants:

Chi - Spec E30 325i
Manuel - SC'd Miata
Rob - Turbo Miata
Ben - Turbo Miata
Evan - Turbo Miata
Colin - ITA Miata
Peter - IRTB Miata
Nicholas - SC'd Miata

Email or post questions here.

thanks-rob

Philip 05-01-2007 01:38 PM

hrmmmmm

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 01:55 PM

yeah... three turbo miatas :dunno:
I thought about going to m.net :nono:
Next year it'll be an East Coast dyno day. :bigtu:

yeah for 3 cars I'm not going.

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 02:28 PM

I think it'd make a good event next year- find somewhere in between where the drive would be too long to do friday afternoon and then dyno on Saturday. Maybe somebody could come up with a shop that's willing to work a better deal than what I got. Especially if we could get some media coverage.

y8s 05-01-2007 03:27 PM

just merge yours with ours up in joizy

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 03:31 PM

deal: next year we meet half way :D

Ben 05-01-2007 07:28 PM

Rob, are they offering any data aquisition? Looks like my LC1 took a shit again today.

Ben

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 11:15 PM

I know they've got a wideband, but doubt it's included in the $50. I'll ask when I confirm the participants.
What's the LC1 doing? nothing?

Ben 05-01-2007 11:21 PM

Error E2, Error E8--Didn't look up what they mean, but it didn't go away after enough time to cool down
Randomly begain a heater calibration and a o2 calibration while driving

m2cupcar 05-01-2007 11:30 PM

whoodya get it from? That definitely sounds like a controller problem.

neogenesis2004 05-01-2007 11:49 PM

No wb for $50, yucky

m2cupcar 05-02-2007 12:12 AM

aren't you in FLA? that would be the ATL then. ;)

Al Hounos 05-02-2007 01:10 AM

No, East TN (deal's gap country).

cjernigan 05-02-2007 01:38 AM

I'd be up for one next year as well. Long as it takes place before I go home for the summer.

m2cupcar 05-02-2007 08:35 AM

Ahhh- so Al and Chad are in charge of the Miataturbo 2008 East Coast Dyno Blowout :bigtu: ;)

Ben 05-02-2007 09:07 AM

Rob, if you happen to talk to the dynolab guys again, would you ask them if they'd be willing to aquire MAP and WB with the run, and if so, what type of extra charge it would be. Please don't make a special call or anything, just if you call them back to comfirm or something.

BTW guys, the Snap on 230V 250A MIG is the tits, once I figured out the temp and wirespeed. I made myself one big ass ugly weld! Got one more to do today, hopefully.... I have no formal welding instruction, my only experience is welding on 2 exhaust sensor bungs.
I'm happy to share, and will attempt a weld for you, or you're welcome to come and try.

Thanks
Ben

m2cupcar 05-02-2007 09:13 AM

I'll ask and get back to you... and the thread.

That's a nice tool Ben. Big volts are the way to go. I've figured out a way to get 220 to my garge, so that'll set me up for a nice tig when I retire. ;) In the meantime it'll be a place to plug in a "real" compressor.

cjernigan 05-02-2007 10:45 AM

Harbor freight sells a little buzzbox tig for like $250. Some guys use them and come out with some decent looking welds. Downsides: Scratch starts, no pedal, not liquid cooled. I would buy one if I was a broke ass and wanted to do some tig in my garage when I was living off unemployment with 5 kids a fat grouchy wife.
Otherwise I would hope I could get a nice one before retirement, Mig suffices for most jobs though. Man I love welding.

I'm sure we could figure something out. There is a couple dynos in knoxville I believe. Air Cooled Classics and ... i can't remember.

hrk 05-02-2007 02:28 PM

Hi again, been busy changing jobs, buying cars and what not.

May 12th as a dyno day? It is SCCA autocross, I am running 1st in the morning and might be able to come after that, maybe even do a pull or three with my locost or tow vehicle for grins and giggles.

So this is official Dynojet facility and we would get prints out of it?

Earliest I could be there would be 1 pm, are you planning to be there at the time?

hrk

m2cupcar 05-02-2007 02:32 PM

My guess is it will be an all day venture. Head over after the autoX and if there's time I'm sure you can jump in. The day starts at 9am. - rob
