3.2l, obviously ITB's, 6-speed close ratio box, MegaSquirt, Schrick 272 cams, 8500rpm...and fwd plus unreliable. :vash:

That would be a sick motor in a real car. People are also punching those 3.2's out to 3.5l. :bigtu:

RotorNutFD3S 01-17-2008 11:25 AM

I may be wrong, but I thought the R32s were AWD? Or is that only certain years? I remember an article a while back saying they could be either or. Just don't know a ton about VWs.

chriscar 01-17-2008 11:28 AM

R32 = AWD

VW = Unreliable

VW + AWD + Megamods = :crx:

that's an r32 motor (mk4 generation) in a mk3 car.

y8s 01-17-2008 11:36 AM

varying length trumpets mean what exactly? half the motor is torquey and half is for high hp?

Zabac 01-17-2008 11:39 AM

i do like how clean the engine bay is though
i have a sweet spot for veedubs, i learned how to drive on a 5spd diesel MkII 4 door, the thing was so slow that my dad trusted me to drive it by myself around the neighborhood (in europe) at age 12...

So the air vortices on each trumpet don't interfere with the one next to it.

I think the builder was being a bit optimistic to think this engine will be sucking enough air for that to be a major consideration...it's something you're more likely to see on 8.0L Can-Am cars...

j_man 01-17-2008 11:44 AM

So what if it is FWD? I've seen lots of people having fun racing FWD cars in the classes those fall into. Even a certan Miata multi national champ has a FWD rally car and that is no less fun than his heavy modified Miata ...

Zabac 01-17-2008 11:46 AM

i suppose its because of how the VR6 cylinder head is, the pasages for the second row cyl are longer i think so they make the trumpets for those shorter

m2cupcar 01-17-2008 11:48 AM

I'd race anything provided to me. :bigtu:

back on subject - I thought the vr6 was fairly reliable engine? or is that only after build job on it?

machanically, the motor is rock solid. Its the transmission and electronics around the motor which are pathetic. At this point in modern machine work, its pretty tough to screw up an engine mechanically. I mean hell, my TT coupe had 3 coil packs in 18 months, among numerous other things I won't get in to.

1967cutlass 01-17-2008 01:46 PM

The problem isn't the FWD, it's the RWD sackriding wanna be race car drivers that refuse to learn to drive them correctly.

erm, the VR6 motor on my friends was 12 valves.. 12.

Mark

I'll defend FWD race cars to the death, if that means I'll get banned that's fine. They're not ideal but they can and often are competitive and fast.

They made them in 24v versions as well. Not sure when the switch happened, but I owned a 2003 VR6 GTi, which was 24v.

and how many valves did I say?

I agree, fwd is not ideal for making a fast race car. That said, it's usually the fast car in most classes when the club racing weekend wraps up. Why? Because they out number most rwd options, and (I believe) have competition adjustments to compensate for the disadvantages INHERIT with fwd. All things being equal on a dry track, rwd will win.

Doppelgänger 01-17-2008 02:38 PM

I still don't get how some people call that a V6 motor.... intake on one side and exhaust on the other = in-line 6... i dont give a fuck if the cylinders aren't in a dead straight line.

I think in some cases FWD cars are advantageous. Mostly for autocross because

1. They are lighter than RWD cars
2. Their weight distribution is usually effective in making the car rotate
3. They have less drivetrain loss
4. You can fit all of your extra tires in the hatch ;)

In STS and STS2 there's no clear winner between FWD and RWD cars, for example. That being said RWD is better, but mainly on larger courses and with cars that have a lot of power.

Well the cylinders are in a V, though it's very narrow.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...%C2%B0_VR6.gif

There's also the VW W8 engine, another odd duck for sure.

C

Doppelgänger 01-17-2008 02:51 PM

oh, i know how its laid out... but it's still a inline to me... intake on one side- exhaust on the other :)

It's also missing the valley betwee nthe clyinder banks the "v" in Vx engine stands for valley... lol jk. But seriously.. i guess it's subjective to call it what you want.

chriscar 01-17-2008 03:32 PM

Maybe they figured VR6 sounded better than Wiggly6. :dunno:

C

kotomile 01-17-2008 05:28 PM

ZigZag6 would have been a weird thing to call an engine, that's my guess.

Of course those wondering why the runners are varying length have their question answered by that diagram.

sprx3 01-17-2008 05:33 PM

you guys are funny :D

the trumpets are different lengths because of the outlay of the cylinders, this gives a tunned length runner, these motors were designed as a deisel engine but this never eventuated (not sure why) so where turned into petrol engines, if you have ever been lucky enough to pull one appart, you will find that the head still has the glow plug postions in the castings & huge main caps & bolts, the head has double the number of bolts holding it down to a normal petrol engine &many more bullet proof features, many people have made over 400kw SAFELY with just a thicker head gasket (turbo application). these motors are not to be messed with, gearbox & driveshafts are also very strong in them, things like plastic cooling sections like thermostat housing that has a tendency of leaking & crappy plastic timing chain retainers that need to be changed when the chain starts slopping is what lets them down, but people have developed metal replacements for the crappy plastic parts. VW's do suffer from some electrical gliches also, but all in all are a pretty reliable car... if i was to build a fwd all motor drag car, i would be starting with this engine !!!!

hope some of this info is helpful

why are you such a crybaby ------? Do you have down's or something. You need to dump off the miata and buy a Capri. They're all the same, you just need to learn to drive. I'm not going to debate the rediculousness of your ricer ------ post. STFU and /yourself.

hey, fat chicks aren't ideal either!!! FWD cars can be competitive with RWD cars. Look at the speed touring car series. All they have to do is throw a few hundred pounds in the rwd cars to compensate for the failure that is racing a fwd car.

paul 01-17-2008 05:46 PM

400kw? we talking microwaves here or the power of your vibrator?

wtf? I've owned multiple vw's. The diff's grenade, aluminum rivets on the ring gear are a shitty idea and constantly break, I've broken main shafts at stock power when driving reasonably, the axles break at 250whp, and they genuinely are pathetically unreliable. I can make this statement from my history with 3 vr6 cars, 2 1.8t's, and a 2.0 jetta. I can't believe you would call the 02a or 02j anything other than a shitbox, sad excuse for a trans.

I vote BAN!

leshok 01-18-2008 12:42 AM

Can anyone verify that this set up is making more power/torque than an equal length velocity stack set up?
I can see problems with intake harmonics with this type of set up.

Oh yea..and +1 for the ban on that guy. He is kind of a asshole, and his post hurt my feelings!

You can't ban someone, he can always create another account and be back ... blocking IPs won't work either, one can jump to a different network in seconds ...

leshok 01-18-2008 01:55 AM

Bummer..
Everyone vote to IGNORE!?

Bryce 01-18-2008 02:37 AM

I was enjoying Hustlers rampage.

Leshok, those come out to be equal-length intake runners due to the distance of the combustion chambers from the side of the head.
