Should my new wkitty keep her claws?

My GF adopted a cat, I'm about to adopt the cat. She is the "dumpster cat" variety who lived the first 8-months of her life out of the dumpster of a thai restaurant by my GF's apartment. One day GF goes home and there is a beaten, bleeding dyingbaby kitter ...next to a dead coon (lol), and she has what looks like a tumor. After a trip to the vet, a ovaries removed along with ovarian parasites, shots, and some cleaned-up wounds...well, we couldn't let her go because she was too cool and always wanted to play (and she's doubled her weight).

Well, I'm going to take-in the kitty but her claws are a problem. She climbs drapes, shreds shit and doesn't seem to care for the nip-dressed-scratching post. She also likes to scrape me once or twice per day, attack my feet in my sleep and well...it hurts like hell and I don't want her shredding my shit. She's stopped attacking in general, but still ambushes our feet when sleeping and shreds shit. We tried using the squirt bottle but well, this cat doesn't care about it. She likes to walk around in the shower when I'm in there, lol. When she gets out of the shower she hops in my GF's bed and rolls around to dry off, lol.

My first reaction is to not remove her claws because its mean...but humans are king of the jungle and i think her life will be better as a housecat than a dumpster coon fighter.

Yank the claws or no?

IMO, removing a cat's claw is one of the cruelest things you can do...

I guess it depends whether or not you want all your shit clawed. When I had cats I de-clawed them. Going to do the same thing with my kids too.

Kitty hits me and I don't like it.

IcantDo55 05-07-2010 11:11 AM

No. Could you imagine having your finger and tow nails torn out?

buffon01 05-07-2010 11:12 AM

Dont you dare Ricky Bobby.

Cats are RWD, remove the rear claws for mad dorifto action in the kitchen.

Don't we also neuter and spay cats? Imagine having your balls REMOVED ... your argument is invalid.

I'd be kinda pissed if somebody lopped off my balls, but I think having my fingers torn off would actually be a bigger quality-of-life issue.

If the cat is tearing shit up, this is the answer: http://www.softpaws.com/

http://www.softclaws.com/

Adhesive claw caps that last 4-6 weeks per application. I'm highly considering them after my cat destroyed my new sectional.

Plus they come in [gayvoice]Fun COLORS![/gayvoice]

lol never seen those before, but i say no on the declaw. hopefully it will learn to use the scratching post, my 2 cats are perfect with it, the kitten learned from the other cat very quickly.

:bowrofl::bowrofl:

You're one funny motherfucker. Nice nail covers I'm gonna forward that to my mom :bigtu:

AlexO35 05-07-2010 11:23 AM

I say keep the claws. It can be a PITA now and then, but keep 'em trimmed and you won't have as many issues.

I guess I value my balls more than you. De-clawing isn't the entire "finger" but the distal phalanges, which are the last joint on the finger. So I'd say balls>finger tips.

Do those stay on long enough to be worth the drama? I may order a set of those and try them. Can I get them at the local pet store or do I have to order? I want to give the kitter a test-run this weekend.

This. I say rip out the front claws, rear ones don't do all that much damage.
