So, how fast have you had your Miata?

Right now, I'm still completely stock, and I had it up to an indicated 110. Based on the RPMs and gear, it was more 115-ish. This is stock with not a single modification, except for heavy shit rims that came with the car.

I'm curious as to what I can expect with my turbo setup. I noticed that every time I hit that, it would easily reach 110, like no ones business, but then just stop accelerating at 115, as though the wind resistance had finally caught up.

This was top down and lights up, so I get a handicap ;)

On a track or closed road course, obviously.

EDIT: Oh, and post your transmission and final drive ratios, as well as tires

I have a 5-speed and 4.3 on stock tires.

Carthusiast 12-16-2009 12:02 AM

97 through the esses

:)

curly 12-16-2009 12:03 AM

lulz, most turbo setups will let you hit the limiter in 5th, which is somewhere in the 130's-140's, depending on your wheels/transmission/rearend. Top speed is never a huge goal for us, as our car's aero sucks up top. I read somewhere that someone had done 175mph in a V8 miata and said the handling became incredibly scary with weird lift happening.

Savington 12-16-2009 12:03 AM

~161mph entering turn 1 at ACS. With a splitter and a GTC-200 at around 3 degrees AOA, it was pretty stable up there.

magnamx-5 12-16-2009 12:22 AM

140 or so the real feat for me is being able to hit damn near 100 mph in and 1/8th of a mile.

JayL 12-16-2009 12:37 AM

Hit 73 the other day, no aero helpers and it felt pretty solid.

jeff_man 12-16-2009 01:02 AM

110 at ecr sunday. 134 at texas world on the front strait. 6speed, 3.9, 225/45/15

JasonC SBB 12-16-2009 01:10 AM

132 GPS recorded top speed on Hwy 5. It was still pulling but there was traffic.

Pen2_the_penguin 12-16-2009 01:29 AM

GPS claimed 118 +/- on I80 going into Fairfield CA at 3AM. I make my trip for UTA weekends exciting after a long drive from Reno NV... then bacon sniffer (radar detector) yelled at me... so back down to 64.

turotufas 12-16-2009 02:04 AM

Speedo read like 120 with the stock powertrain. Total darkness with deers all over. Man we wanted to fish!

137ish right around redline in the MSM with 6spd and 205/50/15

110 on the front straight at NJMP. Fast enough for this old man.

harsh... already judging my experience and ride and I haven't even posted any small specs like that anywhere yet. Does it help your peace of mind that I am an experienced driver since the start... my mother put me into the Mazda Miata driver safty coarse, where I (crazily) drove a miata that looked like crinkled foil, and raised around speed and octane since I can remember...

My miata doesnt have very fancy wheels, but its what I could afford at the age of 16 for my first "mod" if you will, by replacing the steelies with american racing aluminum wheels, and the tires mounted are a class H tire, so 118 is pretty safe, not only that my wing is legit. I have a unique bracing system designed by my uncle from aluminum tubing in the trunk. I cant explain it, but he is a genius, I can still open my trunk, and all the down forces are distributed to my frame...

Maybe you have alot of money to blow, but in my eyes, alot of work and DIY fabrication went into my car that I did almost entirely myself, so to the person that cares (me), its far from stock.

kotomile 12-16-2009 07:39 AM

Calm down.

miataspeed2005 12-16-2009 07:39 AM

162 in my ex 2003 r6 with my ex gf on the back and the miata I have no clue I hit 7000rpm in 5th but don't think I looked at the mph

96rdstr 12-16-2009 07:58 AM

She pulled all the way to 137 in 5th. Then she hit the limiter. Boo!

Braineack 12-16-2009 08:22 AM

I made to 135 indicated on our 1/2 mile front straight at Summit Point Main, dunno how fast I was actually going. I hope to peg redline in 5th this year.

hustler 12-16-2009 08:25 AM

I'm around 130mph at ECR and the car floats and the brakes don't work at those speeds. I need aero.

Oscar 12-16-2009 08:27 AM

131 on some highway in france, 125 on the front straight of zandvoort

gospeed81 12-16-2009 08:45 AM

122mph GPS confirmed.

Still pulling hard, but decided that was enough (more than enough) for a public road.
Was gonna run out of gear in about another 10mph anyhow. May take it out to west Texas after installing the 3.90 and see what it'll do.

Been much faster on the Triumph...but it had real brakes (4 piston dual disc fronts).

FRT_Fun 12-16-2009 08:54 AM

Approx 110mph w/ turbo, 15x8 and stock ratios.

levnubhin 12-16-2009 09:45 AM

I've had the speedo pegged, no clue how fast I was actually going.

Well, according to Garmin GPS, on my trip in Utah I hit 262 mph...faster than a Veyron :giggle:
Seriously though, I'm never looking at my speed-o when driving above 100mph on an empty highway. Now, at Road Atlanta, I was north of 130mph...and later discovered that was with a dislodged converter.... I'd imagine I can hit 145 back there.

Stock 6spd and 3.9 diff w/7700rpm redline on 215-40/17 tires.

Thanks for all of the info. It looks like I hit the wanker on the head. Let me get all the facts straight. Your 16 but were raised around meth/ highway/ gasoline barrels, and are a experienced driver. You atttended a Mazda Miata driver saftey class that was purchased for you by your mom. You basically went to a non-timed autox. You put American Racing 16" wheels and H rated tires on your car to be able to top it out. Then you and your genius uncle make a bunch of trunk bracing to support your wing. Which makes your car handle worse without some kind of front aero @120mph. Your sig says "It may be an automatic, but it still beats your stock WRX" Sounds pretty legit... watch out for natural selection.

My guess is your a clubroadster troll, if not...thanks for making my morning buddy lol

This.

Fastest I've gone was whatever you get out of 7,200 RPM in 5th, on a nice deserted stretch of I-8 east of San Diego. Speedo was indicating a little over 130, which is probably about right. This was with a 5 speed, 4.10 R&P, and 22.7" dia tires.

However, it was not a pleasant experience. Even with the hardtop on and the headlights down, the Miata doesn't have the best aerodynamics in the universe in stock trim. There's a reason that the track crowd have an affinity for wings, splitters, canards, and other aero gems.

Oh, and Hustler, Meth is a hell of a drug.

miata2fast 12-16-2009 12:07 PM

On the Interstate, I went about 130 something on the revlimiter in 5th gear with stock rear during my glorious and ignorant youth.

Machismo 12-16-2009 12:20 PM

112mph in NA trim until I hit a June Bug; I swear I felt the car slow down.

webby459 12-16-2009 12:29 PM

Best, fast: 112ish in my wife's n/a 96, heading into the bus stop chicane at the Glen
2nd Best, faster: 125 in an instructor's Club Sport NB, Monticello Full long straight
3rd Best, fastest: 128ish in my turbo, Monticello Full long straight

All as indicated on the speedo.

buffon01 12-16-2009 12:45 PM

~115 relatively stock, ran out of road ........

ScottFW 12-16-2009 01:17 PM

Stock Miata w/ full interior and street tires, I'm just a hair over 100 on either straight at VIR. Damn thing feels like it hits a wall around 90 mph, obviously the GT2860RS I have sitting in my basement will cure that.

Fastest I've ever driven was 170 (a little over but I wasn't looking that closely) also at VIR, in an FD with a ported rotary, big single turbo, Hoosiers, and aero.

spoolin2bars 12-16-2009 01:21 PM

im my miata, 140mph indicated at the track. maybe 85mph on the highway.
not sure why you would care though. if it's a bonneville salt flats racer you want, you chose wrong buddy. 5 spd. 4.10 final, 205/50's

I've gotta agree with doppelganger. When i'm doing any kind of performance driving I have no time to look at gauges.

That being said, I hit limiter in 4th then shifted to 5th and accelerated a little bit longer before braking. 115 perhaps?

browning 12-16-2009 02:38 PM

about half a mile per hour pushing the bitch off the trailer

rmcelwee 12-16-2009 02:54 PM

I hit 114 (according to the G-Tech graph) before lifting as the Cops lights turned on. He passed me, turned around and gave me a ticket. He definitely didn't have radar or I'm pretty sure I would have gone to jail.

I took a look for the actual graph (interesting because I have it superimposed against one from my mother's kick ass 99 Vette) but I couldn't find it. Might post it later...

jim-NA 12-16-2009 03:02 PM

112mph whilst it still had the Jap speed limiter fitted, GPS verified 125mph after de-limiting it, this was on an olde english "highway" which are generally not the smoothest or straightest of roads, plus there's waaaay too much traffic.

But it was fun, just that once.

Qckslvr 12-16-2009 03:03 PM

120ish in current Miata
120ish in CSP Miata
95 in the 02 SE
100ish in first Miata

GSXR1000 160 on the 280 from San Jose to San Francisco. That is as fast as I was willing to ride, and that is when I lost the Ducati that was in front of me.

Are you fucking high? What the hell is all that, it made no sense to me.

Im 20, happily married with no children, grew up privileged, been deployed over seas in Kuwait and Kandahar as an aerial transporter, and now a reservist in the USAF and working as a vinyl specialist at a sign and design shop. :fawk:

FYI... I dont even know what club roadster is, so... fail. Next time check your facts before making ass hat statements that damage your own integrity, instead of sniffing that powder and taking a hit. Douche.

I don't know, but I'm not really sure where you got off with your first post.

People generally don't take that much offense unless they're insecure about something themselves.

He didn't even quote you...so it looks like you picked this fight.

No one here is judging your whole life (or at least we weren't) for something so trivial. He made a blanket statement about not making the innocent pay for our shenanigan, advice we should all heed.

When my speedometer is actually working (gone through 2 cables and have gone without a speedometer for more of the two years I have had it than I have with one) I did ~115 with the top down and another time about 120 with top up, both times were early AM interstate on the way home from work with music blasting like a fool. And both times needless to say it took a while :giggle:

This Miata is the slowest of the 5 or 6 cars I have owned, and some of my other cars weren't exactly rockets. Surprisingly the fastest I have ever gone in one of my cars was the ricer Honda. My 95 Prelude was pretty much maxed out at about 150-155, speedometer pegged at 140 so I was going by RPM and slightly larger diameter tires.

I don't have the balls to go that fast anymore though. Lately the fastest I go is moving along with the dumb ass people on the interstate running about 85, maybe 90. Even that fast in the Miata is tough to maintain. Low HP piece of shit.

Faeflora 12-16-2009 04:43 PM

I've been faster stock than turboed. Maybe 130 turboed and to about 6500 RPM in 6th which is um 140 or so? When I hit 140, I stuck my left arm straight out the window and my passenger stuck her right arm straight out her window. Together, our arms generated some terrific lift. First, the front wheels rose off the ground about 4 inches and then the rear wheels came up about an inch or two. At that point, the car lost speed of course, and settled back down. A seagull was flying next to us, (one of those fast ones with a racy stripe) and it looked pretty surprised! I also recall us passing a cop- underneath of us(!). I had hit the N20 at 140mph and that got us at least 10 feet off the ground which was just enough to clear his light bar. I was 14 at the time though, and working for the European government so I had diplomatic immunity...

WTF is the point, son? Miatas are neither fast nor quick without a power adder (and we aren't talking about a K&N, bubba). And these cars are gear limited when you do have one. This is exactly the type of question an immature teenage boy asks about any car with perceived sportiness. Your mom's Camry will outrun the Miata from a stoplight and walk away from it on the top end. I know this won't stop your testosterone from going squirt, squirt, squirt, but you've got a faggy little slow-ass car that can out corner and out brake a used Altima, but probably won't outrun it unless it contains at least two fat girls and their big-assed momma.

Is a Kia Spectra known for being a fast car? You may think I'm just trying to burst your bubble, but the Miata uses the same engine as the Spectra. And I'm pretty sure I can pull the Miata on a trailer behind my pickup truck faster than it will go on its own. That's just reality.

I know he didnt call me out, but he did refer to me as ignorantly young, which I was just putting my foot down. I have made mistakes in this miata when I turned 16, so its quite annoying to read such statements, so it is my fault I have a short fuse about this topic. But when he makes a volitle and slandish post where family is involved, its where it crosses the respect boundry. I never stated anything that was offensive toward him, since there was a chance that it wasnt directed toward me, and alot of people do not read bio facts in forums. I am sorry if it caused a stir, but even in the military and workplace, respect is key.

I've looked down and seen the needle well past the 140mph mark. The speedo is a bit optimistic at those speeds though. I have passed cars with there GPS indicating 145mph however and I have been past 7000 rpm in 5th with my 5 speed 3.909 combo which would put me somewhere between 150 and 155. bouncing off the 7400 rpm reve limiter would be abut 159.

The last transmission I scattered internals on went at abut 6500 rpm in 5th gear just before a no lift turn.

Was chasing some local bikes one late after noon on foothills parkway (near the dragon) and theres a downhill section we got pretty fast on. Stopped at a gas station and the bike that was running behind me said we hit 135. I knew we were going pretty quick because when I was braking it car felt a bit different than the normal 95ish to 60 on that road.
