All this expensive gas talk makes we want to buy a Sachs MadAss
Meg has a 50cc 4stroke chinese scooter that she used when she lived in LA. The thing rocked, has 104 miles and still the original first tank of gas in it; but besides not being legal in NJ, the 45mph speedlimit would make it impractable.
The commute from our new house will be all back roads, so I've been trying to find a similar alternative that isn't as expensive as a full-on streetbike, cheaper to insure, even better on gas, etc. Think 150cc engine swaps for the Honda Ruckus, etc. I'd need about 60mph...anyways I recent saw one of these on ebay for around $1500, the Sachs MadAss.
German (?) designed with some pretty nice features. Uses the 50cc honda designed engine from the Z50/CRF50, etc. So it's a manual, instead of the CVT used in normal scooters. Plus there's plenty of performance stuff for those pitbikes...the 150cc'ers sound badass.
I've emailed the US importer (Tomberlin) about the required NHTSA and EPA stickers to make 'em legal in NJ. Get the 50cc'er, dump another ~$400 in a 150cc/4 speed swap, get killer mileage.
This is a pic of the new 125cc, not sure if this larger engined version is legal in the US too but I'd get the 50cc and upgrade the engine myself for less money:
For you guys in an easier state to register/title, this may be a fun way to save gas.

Insurance, purchase, and maintenance costs will be much lower with a small displacement jap 4 cyl than they will with the harley "big" twin. Plus the jap bike will be a better machine in every way.

Yeah, but with the Harley you get automatic baller status...
I have been tempting with the idea of a bike myself, it would have to be small displacement as I don't trust myself with anything too powerfull on two wheels. I commute 33 miles each way to work, but not for much longer, maybe two more months so I may not need a bike depending on my living/commuting conditions.
I would think a 250 Ninja would be all I ever need on two wheels.

No it's a 4 stroke. Oil in the crankcase. There's a dipstick on the oil plug, like some lawn mowers.
I'd get this cause it's "different", would probably get better mileage than a larger cc regular motorcycle.
But you're right, you could probably get a honda rebel or nighthawk pretty cheap used.

Used Suzuki GS500, 60mpg:

Used Kawasaki EX500, 60mpg:

http://newjersey.craigslist.org/mcy/706738332.html
Plenty of power, cheap to insure, lotsa MPG.
I'll be moving back to Cali at the end of the year where gas will be over $5 per gallon. I'm getting 25mpg now driving it hard at 14psi all the time but 91octane isn't going to be a fun conversion. Maybe I turn the EBC down to 10psi, open up spart gap a little more... we'll see if I can get some 30mpg tanks. If not, might end up with a little 500cc something.

dude don't get a ------y scooter.. You can buy a Chinese Hyosung GT650R (Which is a Suzuki SV650...) used for under 2000$ for a fairly new one. Brand new Kaw 250 Ninja (which looks badass IMHO) for 3000$, or a used even bigger bike thats a couple years old for the same price range.
My brother bought a Kawasaki KZ1000 for next to nothing. Cleaned the carbs and the thing is a rocket, gets great mileage, and minimal to maintain.
My 94 Ninja 600 I got for $2000.00 back in 2003 and maybe put 1000 into it total. From a 60 roll I'm side by side with an 05 600RR.

F4i's can be had pretty cheap too, and they get really good MPG, look nice, and can do over 150MPH, oh and they handle well.

[QUOTE=MX_Eva;269370]Alright so if the frame is the gas tank...where is the oil for the engine being kept??
QUOTE]
The Buells have the gas in the frame, and the oil is in the swing arm. What looks like the fuel tank on the Buell is just a cover for the air box.
Sportsters don't have any status, they just get laughed at. Plus the ride sucks over 70 mph. Dynaglides or Softales will get you some baller status.
Screw those, get the new Ducati that is like 73 large.

Aside from "no baller status" and the sucky ride over 70 (which I think is probably a good thing) is there any other reason the stay away the HD Sportster? What else is out there that compares to them? I really dont want a sport bike because I dont trust myself with one.
