Sooo... I just bought a 1.8L motor

I bought another motor. I had to. You guys probably saw the ad for the 96 block with the stripped 99 head. It was cheap enough. Now, the question is what do I do with it?

I also have a small block Ford AJ35 3.9L V8 that I picked up from craigslist for cheap (280hp/286ftlbs) that was going to be my next miata project, but I'm not really thrilled about the labor involved in the v8 swap.

Hard decisions....

Atlanta93LE 05-25-2007 07:29 PM

Just when I thought your car was coming together nicely...

Ben 05-25-2007 07:32 PM

this was not part of the plan

Ben

Atlanta93LE 05-25-2007 07:48 PM

You know, it's a good thing you saw that before I did, or I might have been tempted. Thanks for taking the bullet! That was a steal.

Ben 05-25-2007 07:58 PM

I think I'm going to slowly build it and have it as a back up for when the inevitable eventually happens.

Lex 05-25-2007 08:23 PM

Im still anxiously awaiting the outcome of that 360 race.

y8s 05-25-2007 10:01 PM

belfab guts?

diy port and polish?

cam regrind?

Ben 05-25-2007 10:44 PM

belfab guts?
Maybe belfab rods and those mazda +20 pistons when they come back around on FM DOD

diy port and polish?
Head is "naked" so I might have fun if I have to buy valves anyway

cam regrind?
Webcams

And wait for a deal on a used BEGi turbo mani

OOOOoooooOOOOO and check on Andy Floyd's intake mani......

Slidin'Miata916 05-26-2007 12:14 AM

I would do the V8 Hehe

word. just call FM and offer them money for the pistons. I'm sure you could lowball them if you can't wait for the DOD.

aaaaand make sure you speak with WOT before you buy that mani from andy!

Slidin'Miata916 05-26-2007 10:42 AM

Make it a stroker.

thats still not taken care of?

Ben 05-28-2007 12:32 AM

got the motor today.
seller told me "naked" head but when I went to pick it up, it was all assembled. he told me was was planning on stripping it, but didn't get around to it. It has a little damage on one of the cam bearings, no biggie at all, but the cam had some pitting on it. So a couple of cams, and a case of beer for the guys at the machine shop, and it's good to go. 80k mile 96 block with a 99 head on top.
If I had a turbo manifold for it, I probably would just install it as is. I'll be looking for a used mani and I'm thinking a t3s60.

Atlanta93LE 05-28-2007 12:38 AM

Congrats on a well executed theft. ;)

I could probably be talked out of my Begi NB T3 manifold (new style) for the right offer... there are other things I need to put the money towards and my lazy ass will probably never get it on the car anyways.

magnamx-5 05-28-2007 08:05 AM

actualy 2scoopsofhooah picked that up late last week, so sorry ben gotta get corky to build your one.

Ben 05-29-2007 05:22 PM

Hmmm...
Am I going to need a 99-00 intake mani? Or will the later NB or a NA 1.8 intake mani fit?

Also, should I just use the 1.8 throttle body? Any reason why I can't/shouldn't?

You need the 99 intake plenum. The mspnp is wired up for a 1.6 tbody, so you can't switch over, you must use a 1.6 tps.

Ben 05-29-2007 05:48 PM

the mspnp does nothing with the 1.6 tps.
is there something else that prevents me from going to the 1.8 t'body?

not according to my last thread.

Pipe size is different I believe.

That thread told me nothing.

The 1.8 TB is bigger. That's one of the reasons to use it instead of the 1.6 TB.

Ben 05-29-2007 06:47 PM

yeah I read that. again, WHY MUST I USE A 1.6 TB? Why can't I use a 1.8 TB?

Mymiataflys 05-30-2007 08:40 AM

I know the signal that controls the ISC is differant bwtn the two. That's one of the issues I'm going to have to work out , since I'm keeping my 1.8 TB on my 1.8 swap powered by my 1.6 link. apparently the mark1 version could operate either style valve while the mark2 cannot. I will apparently have to use an idle speed higher than normal to allow for a drop in idle speed when accesories such as A/c are turned on. I actually cranked my motor last night for the first time. will be working on it some more today and tomorrow.

steelrat 05-30-2007 08:43 AM

Hey Ben....

99 intake will need to be on the head for sure. You don't have much choice, unless you get a BEGI, or one of the other custom ones.

TB.... you've got issues with the MS, probably since it's designed for the 1.6 TPS sensor.... which is the on/off. The 1.8's will have a different TPS. Also I'm not sure 100% if an M1, 1.8 TB fits, so if it doesn't, you'll need to fab something for the IAC -- it's totally different on the 99+. <G> The M1 1.8 IAC might mount work with the 1.6 computer.

What about going with one of the BTB style ones from FM (aka SOT) that the SC guys use? Maybe that would let you get away with some of it....?

Dave,

Newbsauce 05-30-2007 08:53 AM

Ben,

As far as rods, the wiseco's are a steal at 476 on raceeng.com

Dave,

aw, shit. I didn't know about the IAC problem.

WOO HOO!! We got us a pioneer. Please keep me/us updated as you figure it out. My MS is probably like your link 1 in the fact that idle control is reactive instead of proactive. My idle is a little bit higher now too for the ac.

OK, I'll have to find the 99 mani. They seem to be EXPENSIVE.
I'm not worried about the TPS situation--it's not an issue with my MS. The IAC may or may not be an issue.

Yeah the IAC for the 99's runs without the "wax" valve in it... so it's a completely different design. The only person I can think of running the 99 one, is Gord on M.net, with the cold side, but he's got a link.... IIRC.

There was a recent thread about IACs over there. Might explain it better than I can.

Dave,

I just emailed DIY on this issue. I'll post the response.
