Sorry Boys

I ended up getting out of the buyer's market for a while. Decided not to get a Miata. Decided not to get anything actually. Until a good deal rolled around... Something akin to my screen name.

Nice, I've always liked those.

What can you possibly want more then a Turbo'd Miata? :fawk:
Edit. Besides the 944 =] |
Nice. Friend of mine has a few 944's. Fun to drive. Can't say the same about working on them...
|
Yeah. Effing spark plugs are a biatch. I had to slip a U join on the socket after dropping it onto the plug and smashing in down with hand pressure, just to get the #4 out. The thing is FAST though. I love it.
I still want a Miata though. The 944 will be a crappy autocrossing car, because the turbo lag cuts the power in half. So it's like lag-lag-lag, SPINNNNNN! Weak. Now out at Hallett it will be a dream to have the 944. I want to find a cheap NA to replace my Saturn. I don't need more than one passenger at a time anyway. HAHA |
Is that car a reliable 350atw w/o going into the motor? I know they fly at PCA races, but not sure what's gone into them, and thought I remembered that number being thrown out. How heavy?
|
I've seen as high as 600 wheel on a dyno with stock internals. Granted the person building the car up knew what they were doing. Most guys can get close to 400whp and stay comfortable with the engine's capabilities. My first goal is 300wheel. I'd really like to see as high as 320 on my first go around. After I get the bigger turbo and bolt-on's, I'm shooting for 400 at the crank.
I don't need all that power, but the build I'm going for should leave the car completely controllable on the track with a useable powerband. I mean. In stock form the thing produces 220hp, but makes an amazing 240+ torque. And I've blown out my cat. Pretty sure of that. The car is a little louder than it should be, stock and it pulls great up top. To put that into context, I've pulled a modded Mazdaspeed 3, 270whp Tiburon, and a modded S2k all from a 40 roll. And then there was the Honda EK coupe with an H22 swap last week and some guy in a modded 300ZX last night. He was cool. His turbo "lit" a lot sooner than mine, but when I got full boost I pulled past him pretty strong. I can hang with my friend that has a modded 350Z. All the bolt-ons with a new tune. I hope I can get some LS1's later this year! That will be some down-n-dirty fun! |
If you don't have a purist attitude a megasquirt/wb, bigger cleaned used injectors, mbc, rebuilt k27 turbo, and 3 or 4in exhaust would do wonders at reaching +350hp on the cheap.

As long as you don't do alot of drag launches. There's some kind of issue with pilot/throwout bearings. |
Nice, clean find. You're going to remove the "OMFG I can't believe I'm driving a Porsche!!" front vanity plate though, right?
|
Clean find. I love it.
+1 on removing the el douchebag vanity plate. |
I like those! nice find, very shiny.

KLR and DME chips work wonders on 951's. I always wanted an 89 Turbo S.
|
Awesome ride. I was looking at getting a 944 before I got the miata. Maintenance costs scared me away at the time. 944s are badass, especially since they can hang with the 911s of their day.

Love to have one if I had the pockets deep enough.
|
well done sir. i love porsches
as soon as i have the cash and a garage i will be getting an air cooled (yeah, technically oil cooled) 911 of some vintage. |

I'm getting the Cupcar software flash from my 944 specialist. He's probably got more experience with 944's than anyone else in the country. Seeing as he's been behind the development of the car, and helped build some prototype race-versions back in the 80's and 90's. Basically, I'm gonna do 3 or 4 inch straight pipe, with the software and a larger #8 hot-housing, shimmed wastegate and a better bypass valve. That should get me the goal I'm looking for. I think there were a couple other things. The k26 compressor will support into the 300's. I would get a k27 compressor, but the lag is more pronounced than I would like. I already have to wait longer than most of you with good sized turbo's for full boost. Its rediculous. Lag kills these motors. When I go to replace the turbo with a bigger unit, I will go for a newer KKK turbo that can light up sooner on my engine.

I was looking at a 944, until I realized it would be a bitch to work on. So now I'm eyeballing E36 M3's
|
Its really not that bad, guys. If you can count your IQ on at least two hands, you can work on a 951. The bitch is all the shit you have to do sometimes, just to get one thing done. BUT, I can understand the reasoning. 944's really don't need servicing a LOT. So I guess it balances the effort into clusters of hard work and busted hands. Other than that, you can beat on them without worry of mechanical failure.

How much does it weigh?
