Spec Miata Times - Newb ?

In the bolts loosening thread, Spec Miata times are always mentioned. Where do you find these times listed?

Are we comparing our turbo cars to n/a Spec Miata times? Isn't that unfair? Or is there a turbo Spec Miata league too? Are SM so fast they can be competitive w/ turbo cars?

Sincerely,
:noob:

Times are usually known among the racer crowd, but you can probably find lap records on your local SCCA and NASA websites.

Yes, comparing turbo cars to N/A spec miatas that make 120whp (the ones that set records atleast). It's not that SMs are so fast, it's that turbo guys are slow. :fawk:

UrbanSoot 09-19-2009 12:06 AM

yeah, most people with turbo miatas (besides select few) are posers and are very slow on track

naarleven 09-19-2009 12:24 AM

Spec cars are also extremely consistent on times. For the most part its the best gauge to determine how fast you actually are.

Savington 09-19-2009 12:30 AM

The SM record is essentially the fastest you can get a "stock"-powered Miata around a track. If you have more power and equal grip and you can't go faster, you need to re-examine your driving (rather than your car). They are an EXCELLENT metric of performance for Miatas of all breeds.

kenzo42 09-19-2009 12:48 AM

Anyone know the SM record for Buttonwillow?

naarleven 09-19-2009 01:07 AM

CalClub Spec Miata Lap record at 25 CCW is 0:02:10.114 (Chuck Matthews) 3/15/2009

[race 25 CCW does not use the "Bus Stop".]

CalClub Spec Miata Lap record at 13 CCW is 02:06.955 (Andrew Fernandez) set in 2002.

Or use street tires, or antique r-comps, or value their lives since they don't have a cage, or have beyond full weight cars, or haven't dedicated hundreds of hours to racecraft, or....

To say most are posers, simply if they are slower than SM records, is pretty damn ignorant and fucking insulting coming from a guy who, to my recollection, has never mentioned being on a track.

The guy that shows up in full race apparel in his new ferrari and can't drive a lick? He's a "poser"! The guy who does a few track days a year in a turbo miata, running near but not quite SM times in a daily driven street car? Poser doesn't seem to apply.

Now go sell some parts you bought but will never use. :fawk:

No, he's a wannabe. He's not a poser until he starts bragging about his awesomeness.

cueball1 09-19-2009 02:54 PM

I always figured the wannbe was the guy who showed up in his crappy gutted 1988 acura LS but bragged about the "500hp S2000" in the garage he didn't bring since it was...

A. threatening to rain B. Needed tuning, clutch, etc. C. blowing IC hoses D. shreaded the r-comps last time out

buffon01 09-19-2009 04:20 PM

Im a poser :wavey:

That guy is just full of shit and deserves neither poser nor wannabe status.

I think sav is on the money a dedicated and, reliable racing miata, vs our cobbled together turbo setups. The SM people spend a shit ton of money to be as good as they can be, and they follow strict rules to make things even harder to be fast. So if we can consistantly beat or meet there times. Then our cars and the work we have done etc are to be accepted as on par with these race cars.

Savington 09-20-2009 01:37 AM

FYI - a national level SM has as much money in their 'stock' 124whp motor as I do in my drivetrain.

ive been on track a few times. my current fastest lap on streets of willow is 1:28 on street tires in my daily driver (3700lbs 350z.) im still slow on track and im men enough to say that. but at least i admit that im slow and im doing something about it (trying to get more seat time.)

now, if you are in it for fun (running couple times a year in street-driven car) then you would not get offended because you are not serious about racing and dont care about your lap times that much, correct?

if you are serious about racing then you would show up in something closer to a race car then a daily driver and perhaps do more track driving then few days per year and your times would be pretty decent.

Yeah...5-10k 'stock' motors are retarded. SMs also bump/draft their way down the damn straightaways in ways single miatas can't.
