I think SCCA/NASA should institute a claiming rule - you can have the motor out of any Spec Miata for $3k, provided you install a freshly rebuilt Mazda crate motor in its place.

No need to be sorry, it's the internet.

Claiming rules are stupid and don't work. Racer A has motor in his car and Racer B claims it and uses it for the next race. The next race, Racer A protests Racer B for everything he knows to be illegal about the motor. Racer B gets disqualified.

I hear from a lot of spec miata drivers that the cheating has gotten out of control.
Its like that with all the scca classes though, I used to race Formula Vee's and the cheating was obvious, but they never tear down engines in the pits like they used to.

CalClub Spec Miata Lap record at 13 CCW is 02:06.955 (Andrew Fernandez) set in 2002.

13CCW record is mid 2:04s. newer SM is faster due to new rule change on running NB hats.

Just picked up a datalogger this summer. Only track I've run since is ORP. It's a new track and won't have any sanctioned racing on it until next year at the earliest. I'm running 2:07-08 CCW and 2:05-06 CW. The SM driver who's been out there the last couple times was running about the same according to youtube videos. Of course I found that strange since I was passing him regularly. Here's his vid.

To put those times in perspective a pro driver in a purpose built new style Z06 was running 9-10 seconds quicker. Very experienced young guy in a 240 with an LS swap and huge hoosiers pulled off a couple 2:00 flat laps.

I've heard it said that trailering your race car to the track can shave a second or two from your times, since that nagging thought of not being able to get home if you crash your car does not apply. Go out to see a spec miata race sometime, especially a national. These guys have very little regard for their cars, and sometimes it seems very little regard for their personal safety! Take a look at some of the popular spec miata wheels, they are going with very low offset units now to tuck them further under the fenders. There is only one reason for this: the racing is that close.

I have seen spec miata races where most of the spec miata fields were lapping quicker than prod class racers with slicks. These guys are fast, and the cars are very very well prepared.
