There is this cat in our neighborhood that we originally thought was a stray because he spends all day and night hanging around our house. We fed him a couple of times because he would sneak in and eat our cat's food. Well now he never goes away. Every once and awhile we'll give him some food and he quickly gobbles it up like he's starving. I was given the impression by someone in the past that cat's only eat what they need (when they are adults) and if they're eating it means that they're hungry or not getting something in their diet.

Well now this cat has a collar with no address or phone number on it so we know he has a home somewhere near by but now days he is seriously around our house 24hrs a day! Now at night he even scratches at the doors to be let in. We test it out one night and let him in. He ate a full serving of cat food and went and passed out in the bedroom closet on some sweaters.

So can cats just be glutinous? We feed our cat very good expensive food (makes a huge difference by the way) so perhaps this cat's owner is just feeding him shitty food and he isn't getting everything he needs. He's a super cool cat and currently he and our cat get along seemingly fine. We aren't opposed to taking him in permanently if he really does need a better home but i'm not sure how we'd go about that at this point.

He is the gray cat on the left. Hence we have named him gray cat.

You can see here that he isn't skinny. He is pretty solid.

Here he is trying to get in our cat's food.

Rescued strays will do the overeating thing, too. I have a pair, and while one is fairly normal (as far as cats go), the other is a pig, and has become a bit fat.

If you didn't know when or where your next meal was, wouldn't you bulk up when you got the chance?

I have two cats at my moms house and my freind has 8 at here house the only cat I have ever met that is seriously over weight is this one. He was someones cat and I gues they threw him out because he had a collar and clean fur but was very very underweight when she got him and now he is 32 lbs. I would hope your new cat freind is just hungry.

Attachment 199771

wayne_curr 03-03-2010 03:00 PM

Ok I think we'll stop feeding him then. He definitely has a stopping point which is why I thought perhaps he wasn't eating enough at home. I figured a cat with an eating disorder would just never stop.

Its so hard for me to turn him away when he's scratching at the door and begging :(

Sean 03-03-2010 03:05 PM

It weird because the cat I posted before only eats a little more than the other cats every day but he dose not seem to gorge himself till he can't move he just makes more trips to the food bowl for a snack. So it is hard to tell if the other cat is just hungry or just likes your house and food. In most cases I would say he is hungry but if he starts to look like the big cat I would leave him be.

y8s 03-03-2010 03:05 PM

we have a fatty that gets crazy if we dont feed him. which sucks early in the morning.

Braineack 03-03-2010 03:10 PM

I used to feed my cat treats. I cant do it any more, she become neurotic and anytime she heard the drawer opening in which they were stored she's nearly kill herself to run over and get some or she'd just camp it out and wait. Even if I moved them, she caught on and it was her new favorite place to sit and be lazy. She still to this day expects treats if you go near the first drawer...

I'd consider my my cats hefty, but I leave food out for them and just refill the bowl if it's low. I recently started cutting it back because the one snores, shes a good 13lbs, the other 11lbs.

9671111 03-03-2010 03:13 PM

Reminds me of my cat, looks and behavior. We rescued her from some white trailer trash shit and she wasn't fed that well. Ate everything in sight for quite a while until she got used to her feeding schedule. After that she settled down and isn't as much of a little piggy.

Our cat is similar. He loves his treats but doesn't expect it. He loves it when we give them to him and there is a strong pavlov effect when we crinkle the bag just like your drawer. Our cat is very pushy with wet food however and will chase us around the house and bat at our feet til we give it to him lol.

our laser pointer has a chain on it, and even the slightest movement they both think it's "game on". we keep it on a the coffee table and it gets accidentally moved often

dustinb 03-04-2010 12:44 AM

One of my cat's is a complete retard. He will eat non stop if the food is there. One day I forgot to put the lid back on a big tin I keep the catfood in. He ate till he barfed, and then continued doing so until the food was all gone. Of course he wouldn't eat his barf, had to be fresh.

I also have to buy him special huge sized cat food because he doesn't chew. He normally chews the massive stuff but every once in a while I come across a huge pile of completely unchewed catfood...

wayne_curr 03-04-2010 12:52 AM

Gray cat was just scratching at the door. I opened it a crack and he forced his way in and I couldn't get him to leave. I didn't let him eat.

In better news I learned that my cat doesn't care what it is that comes out of his treat bag. I pulled some cat food out of it and he ate it like treats. He wouldn't do the same with the cat food straight from the bowl. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest that he isn't smarter than that.

what is it? I have this same issue with mine, she doesn't chew then barfs whole pellets cause she eats too fast. I have to feed her vasoline too so she shits out hairballs and has more room in her stomach.

Faeflora 03-04-2010 09:36 AM

How do you feed her vasoline? There's some hairball lube in a tube you can buy but i don't think it works very well.

Braineack 03-04-2010 10:10 AM

rub that shit on her paw and then she runs away and licks it up. the stuff in a tube is just vasoline with sugar it's goopy as shit and makes a mess.

Faeflora 03-04-2010 10:11 AM

I will try this the next time I am constipated. ty

It's Hill's T/D prescription cat food. I buy it at my vets office. It's called a dental food because usually cats who just swallow their food have horrible teeth problems.

Never feed "stray cats", they just keep coming back. The same principle applies to ugly chicks, which just happen to go by the same name in my circle of friends from college. Everyone has had beer goggles and made some sort of transgression :(

ours does that and then re-eats it.

the other day i was in a rush to get out the door and saw a telltale pile of barfed food (nearly intact and slimy) and then when I came home it was mysteriously gone and nobody had cleaned it up. :ugh2:

Could be far worse. My mother has a pair of Boston Terriers who believe that one complete trip through the digestive and excretory process is not sufficient.

Slayer 03-04-2010 01:05 PM

Speaking of re-feeding… I went to a rib joint, ate a full rack of babybacks, a side of beans, garlic bread. 2 hours later I wasn’t feeling so hot and I yacked the whole meal onto my back patio, nice neat pile. My 7 lb. cat came along and powered through the whole pile in a couple minutes. Probably ate 10% of his body weight. Seemed like a lot food for such a small animal. He’s dead now, but he lived to 22yrs. He ruled.

One of our cats did that in front of me once. She ate most of it...walked around and came back for 2nds. I'm sure they do it more then we know when we are not around. Indoor cats have much longer lives than outdoor cats. However if you keep your cat indoors only for years then start letting them out they wont go much farther than the yard. Our cat goes as far as the neighbor's yard and thats it. We also have cats all over the neighborhood and he seems fine with them for the most part. Cats like to be social with other cats and it will make them require less attention from you.

We dont let our cat outside at night because he is black and we have lots of racoons.

The worst is waking up in the morning, opening the door, stepping into the hallway and then finding your bare foot in a pile of undigested moist cat food.

housecats are an invasive species. they really should remain indoors.

my cats growing up were in/out

current cats are indoor only.

Do you feed your cats wet food at all? Our cat eats one maybe two tablespoons a day and it does great things for his fur. Our cat has only puked on two occasions and both times it was a little bit of foamy liquid like perhaps he drank too much water.

Braineack 03-04-2010 03:17 PM

I don't think that's true 100% of the time. There might be some predisposition, but my friends had a white cat with two blue eyes and he would come running in from the other room when he heard the shake of the Friskies treat bag or if you called his name, so he had at least one good ear. He was a bit sickly when he was a kitten though, and he died at only 9 years of age. Vet presumed it was some undiagnosed heart condition.

Actually my friends had both cats at the vet for a routine visit and the white one just suddenly died right there in the waiting room. This was two weeks ago and my friends were quite upset. The other cat, which was less social and didn't play much with the white cat while he was alive, has suddenly become affectionate and needy. She will sit and stare at the cupboard that he used to get into and hide, as if she's hoping he'll pop out of there. It's cute and sad.

Eh, my cat is pretty indiscriminate about what it throws up on my shit. Wet or dry. This is almost a weekly goddamn thing. Hardwood / concrete floors here too, ~4700 sq/ft in fact, and she still has, HAS, to puke ON my shit. Aside from that, she's the smartest cat I've ever had or seen.

No it can hear out of both ears fine. Apparently the cat has to be 100% white in fur and my retard cat has some dark hair in spots.

As for wet catfood, neither of my cats will eat it. My black intelligent cat (her name is Chainsaw) doesn't throw up undigested catfood.

I had a def white cat with blue eyes. It was a small skinny but nutty cat, liked the vaccume cleaner, several times while I was working in the garage it would hang out on top of the air compressor while I was grinding making all sorts of annoying noises. When the compressor kicked on the cat would stand up and look down at it while it was vibrating it feet pretty hard and wait for it to stop then it would lay down again on the nice warm compressor housing. It was an indoor cat but it got out one morning and I’m pretty sure it got nabbed by a coyote, I saw a coyote zip across the yard the very next moring after searching to find the cat. Very sad to loose that cat.

I do not recommend letting your cat outdoors ever. If you do it once, they will forever try to run out the door. Outside, they will get run over, tortured by people that need to be executed slowly, get killed by dogs, killed by racoons, kill all the birds in your neighborhood, and BREED. There are a fucking bazillion cats so the first thing you do, please fix it.

I do recommend kitty partners, preferably from the same litter. Some cats are "only cats" though and they hate other cats. There's not that many of those kinds though.

People would be less likely to get killed or injured if they never went outside too. Can you imagine how shitty life would be if you never went outside?

We encourage our cat to go outside and be social with other cats and also to catch birds. Unfortunately he sucks at catching birds, only brought back one but he got rewarded with lots of attention, treats and wetfood for that one so he should be more motivated to do better.

Birds and Cats - The Cats Indoors! Campaign

rleete 03-05-2010 08:57 AM

Fuck the birds. Noisy shit machines. My cats go in and out as they please, but are in at night (around 9:30) for their own protection. Racoons and such will mess up a cat bad, and I don't need the vet bills.

ALL cats should be fixed, as a matter of course. But not letting them out is cruel. We have prisons for a reason - it's punishment.

Birds do eat stuff like bugs that bite you. Just FYI

I thnk that went pretty far over my head.

I've been thinking about pet insurance too. I bet it costs more for an outdoor cat like health insurance costs more for a smoker.
