Transformer Apartment

I'd live there. Pretty bad ass concept. I can see that being more common in the future, especially in big cities with small homes/apartments. I can imagine that in a slightly larger form, with automation and something like a touch pad to transform the rooms without touching anything. Even without the transforming, the energy savings along with making the space seems larger is pretty awesome too.

I saw this on either reddit or digg yesterday. Very cool concept and implementation. Seems like it would be fairly easy to automate with some servos and some fancy arduino work.

Yep. Lazy Americans wouldn't like having to manually move walls, so a touch of a button and a wait of 4 or 5 seconds would be far superior. If I could build something like that for a reasonable price, I wouldn't mind living in a slightly smaller home. Maybe 800-1000sq feet. Think of the savings every month. Only having to heat and cool one or two rooms and use less electricity (have it so when a room is not in use, everything within turns off). Of course with a family, you would need a larger home with separate rooms, but even applied in a larger home with enough rooms for everyone, this would still be something cool to do.

Jesus, what I wouldn't give to live in a 1000sq ft place. I'm in an "acceptably decent" apartment for seattle and I'm paying damn near ~1k/month for ~700 sq ft.

Yeah, big city this idea makes much more sense. In my area, you can get a modest apartment with probably 1200-1500sq ft for roughly $650-$800/month, depending on location and how nice of a place.

I thought he currently lived there with 4 others. Watched it again. I get it, really cool!

Thank you for another reminder of why I left seattle. I just cannot live like that. I'd live on a farm if I had my way but Jacki prefers the city.

We pay 825 for our own house with a fairly large yard (that someone mows for us for free) and a garage. No roomates.

i wonder how all the power and cable and water runs to the moving walls...

also, you had better not have any pets in that place

also, do not get drunk in there

If he got rid of the 10,000 CDs and went to an MP3 player he could remove one of his rooms.

i have a friend who lives in a tiny house with his wife and kid, they are miserable because they can't get away from each other. in a 300 square foot apartment i'd get annoyed that i couldn't get away from myself.

It could be worse Jeff... we live in the East bay area and pay $850 for about an ~450sq ft apt. An apt that size in SF would be double at a minimum.

Oh I know there are places that are worse, I'm just pissed because I live like 15-20 minutes outside downtown. It gets even rapier there.

I have a pretty cool litte one bedroom, maybe 900SF. I can walk to two grocery stores, a library, about 10 restaurants, a thrift store, an autoparts store, about 6 bars, and other stuff. 475 a month. I just have to live in a city of about 200K. Oh the horror.

I did the city thing in PHX, which is probably as cheap a large city as you will find in this country outside Detroit. And even then it was plain not worth it. Traffic, shootings, endless bullshit. No thanks.

UrbanSoot 05-04-2010 11:34 PM

fuck you guys... i live in west hollywood which means that im paying almost $1200/mo for ~550 sq. ft. total space (1 bedroom apartment)

neogenesis2004 05-04-2010 11:47 PM

I live in Richmond City, 1 block south of the James River. I rent a 2000sq ft house with a 2 car garage for $950/month, and commute 1 hr each way to work and back in non existent traffic. OHHHH THE HORROR!!!

NA6C-Guy 05-05-2010 12:46 AM

Fuck all of you guys! Turning my fancy interior design/architecture thread into a rent/house payment discussion thread. I hope you all get aids.

FRT_Fun 05-05-2010 01:01 AM

Braineack 05-05-2010 12:09 PM

:td:

What do I got to do... Shove my wife in the bathtub and close the wall to get away from her? I'd rather just go upstairs and play on my computer on my very large desk that i don't have to pull down from some contraption.
