Turbo Lawnmower

Is it possible?

Lets say you have an old 13hp 600cc lawnmower laying around and you want to turbo it?

Is there a turbo small enough to actually make boost on something like that?
How would you control boost levels?
Is there a carb available (dirtbike, go cart) that you could set up as a blow through?

Just curious me and a few friends have been tossing the idea around and just cant figure out if we could make it work. We have tons of dirt bike stuff and can fabricate and weld, we just cant put a plan all together.

You guys think its possible?

2 words. Nitrous oxide.

I know I have posted those before. T25 turbo. Yes it spooled. . . JUST WAY AFTER THE GOVERNOR

Fun project just messing around. We have a turbo off of a kabota diesel tractor that we were going to put on. Inlet is 1"...should work great, but its been a few years since we even thought about it. I found a gokart efi kit the other day that was ridiculously simple and fairly cheap, i forget where.

I still want to know of a nice oiling solution. Your typical lawnmotor engine doesn't have an oil pump.

jacob300zx 11-10-2010 10:42 PM

I know there used to be a little baby ihi turbo on ebay.

Opti 11-10-2010 10:43 PM

Run seperate oiling system, just a little resovior and a remote mount oil pump, like in the F-body STS kits.

I think ive figured it out....draw through carb.
I completely forgot about draw through setups (been into EFI too long i guess).

I am searching for that cart EFI setup someone mentioned.

The plan is to actually do it right, I mean actually match a compressor map to the engine and try and have it as optimal as possible.

We plan to use the lawn mower as a test bed, and if we can get the engine sorted then its time to find a cart frame.

Some do. I have a Murray with a 22hp B&S that's been in the midst of a GT15 installation for over a year now. Microsquirt module for the EMS, single fuel injector, and the flywheel itself is the trigger wheel. Should be pretty cool if I ever find time to finish it!

The project started because the muffler was starting to get shot out and the tractor is loud.

TurboTim 11-11-2010 11:30 AM

aHH I was thinking your typical briggs & stratton, like the one on my push mower. I'd love to put that tiny ebay one on my 5hp briggs.

How about a 450cc turbo Honda Ruckus with nitrous?

That doesn't have nitrous. The nitrous is a balast tank. Well at least it was back when that build was on some honda forum. And that build is one of the reasons why I HATE epic build threads that start from the beginning of the build, making people wait a year + for it to be done. Lame. Finish it then post pics. Ha.

Good to see him almost done with it. Excellent fab work.

Opti, ur gonna make a death kart? to beat the na benchmark, ur gonna need a small aluminum high revving motor i would think. can you turbo a honda rs125 2-stroke? i wonder if they make a 125 4 stroke... good times. in for the build thread.

jasonb 11-11-2010 04:55 PM

what motor is that? not too big. excuse the double post.

Opti 11-11-2010 08:52 PM

I wouldnt consider it a death kart.
Sunday when im off ill run out to air port to grab the mower.
Then the plan is to get the tranny back in the S10 blazer so I can have some garage room.
ill probably spend a few hours and rebuild the enigne in the mower, give me some time to familiarize myself with the platform, and see if I even have a workable platform.

If we can make it work with a IHI RB31 and have it actually run well, i will buy a cart from this little go kart track in FW and transfer the engine.

Cool thing is, when i sent the message out this morning to some friends to rally the troops, I got a repsonse from a friend of mine saying he has an LC-1 and a boost gauge hes will to donate for tuning reasons. I loled hard.

I would be incredibly surprised if I can make 20hp.

That could be about the nitrous. I know what you mean about the long thread, I followed it for about a year before I lost interest, but now it's looking pretty tasty.
