I love my expedition, I can't imagine going smaller again. In fact, ID love to have an excursion with the turbo diesal motor. We paid under 20 for our 04 with 30k on the clock. It can haul anything ID ever need to haul and can tow my miata with the family loaded no problem. And you can't beat the comfort on long trips (which we take often).

I'm obviously biased due to my current exposure to VAG cars but I highly recommend the Passat Waggons as I did earlier. The 2.0T is a great powerful reliable engine that gets good gas mileage. Not nearly as good as the TDI versions though. The older 1.8T isn't a bad engine either, equally as reliable.
VAG cars do have a "service position" which basically entails you loosening up the front end to slide it forward when ever you need to do specific uncommon tasks on the front of the engine like a timing belt swap.
It's not difficult, nothing to be scared of by any means.
OEM pads last forever, you do not turn German rotors you just replace them, the cost of pads is standard in comparison to other vehicles. I would expect the average $50 for a good name brand OEM pad. The 5 MT transmissions that come with the 2.0T are great. They shift excellent and they do well over time. I've seen how they fail under pro-racing conditions and it's nothing you would encounter on the street unless you like to kick the shifter.
LGTs are hot.

You guys have neglected SamNavy's other need...
For that need, it's the one time in a mans life when it's a really good idea to spend more for the best quality. Our companies health insurance paid for the lowest price butcher in town.
Do your research and pay extra if need be!
Oh, and buy a Passat. If you buy used with either the 1.8 or 2.0, make sure they have always run Synth in it. The 1.8 had some premature failures do to coked up dyno oil. It's a great motor if well maintained.

Had the FXT. Got the LegGT wagon. Am borrowing my dad's OBXT while I'm engine swapping my wife's Sebring 'vert. The LGT is great. They handle much better than the Foresters but yeah, the 5 speeds are harder to find in the wagon.
The LGT wagon does everything a minivan does aside from making you look like an emasculated douche.
Legs have more cargo room in the back than the FXT because they are longer. Plenty of room for a double stroller in both and enough room to haul longer **** with the seat folded down (though it'll be tough with two carseats).
Tunable, moddable, good aftermarket, ***** enough to get out of their own way.
Had an Quattro 1.8. Suby's are easier and cheaper to work on. I liked the Audi, but you pay Porsche prices for parts.

Somebody mentioned in a PM to look into a couple year old 4Runner. I've found a few 05-06 4Runner Limiteds that are just squeezing into my pricerange. I found one that looks ******* awesome, but it's $27k. I might be heading to a few Toyota dealerships this week to see how much they deal.

Black looks great...2wd/V6/limited... the little lip spoiler over the liftback adds a nice sporty touch. I know it's low mileage, but I can't believe they'll get $27k for a 5yr old sport-ute.

So ... parents of young children who deny themselves a minivan are like those guys. You know, those guys that want a sports car. But no F'in miata for them!
Your back will thank you in 4-5 years if you get the minivan. But I understand, the missus has a thing against them. Ok, whatever. When her back is complaining too then maybe she'll come around.
Buckling seatbelts in captain's chairs through a sliding door is much easier than what you'll do in any SUV.
Did I mention my triple zone AC? Or the ..... dvd player? With headphones? That's the awesome goodness right there! They watch a dvd while you and the missus listen to NPR in the front. Or Limbaugh. Works either way.
Check the Honda Pilots. My sister/brother in law have one, it's a nice vehicle. Roomy and relatively efficient.

You can go through USAA for invoice pricing on one like I did, ended up around $25k and you'll get much better MPG than any SUV, and better than some hybrids.

I WILL PUSH A VOLVO ALL DAY LONG....
All for moms, still fun to drive for dad's You can get great options all under 20 k Maintainance is simple. (i do parts at a dealership , give me a ring, ill do wholesale prices plus shipping...
someone said it on here before, ill buy a volvo used, resale values suck (good for buyer)
SUV = xc90 great space. Good gas mileage, no major issues 2004-2010...
STAY AWAY from the xc90 with a t6 engine (transmission failure). All other engine and drive combo is great.
Wagon.= Large wagon V70 2004-2009 xc70 for awd . but not necessary.
Very roomy, super comfortable. No major problems either., Timing belts every 105K
t-5 engine very responsive, trustworthy (been building essentially same car since 1999)
Small wagon v50 05-09 Non turbo, eh quite boring, but can be found great for 15k
turbo editition, much more pep...nicer features many are coming into the market used. Worth a test drive. We really have NO issues out of these cars too. (volvo did extend warranty on the engine PCV system.)

I had a B5 S4 for awhile. People like to talk about how unreliable they are, etc. but with the support of a good site (only one, quattroworld.com), you would be OK.
Just buy a stock one and don't mod it, it gets expensive rather quickly. The ability to pull on boy racers in Mustang GTs all day in a heavy, 250 bhp (~180 awhp) grocery getter is pretty fun. They're also quite cheap now.
