VW corrado?
 
Does anyone have much experience with them? (I remember his lordship hustler may have had one, or some kind of vr6)

I'm looking into one for a good deal and I have always really liked these cars, and loved the engine.

Its a salvage title and was recently rear ended ontop of that, but the damage is minor (bumper cover and support+rear hatch, but still closes and seals) and the price is too good to ignore.

Is there something I should really look out for with these? I know the rear wing beaks, and the synchros can be bad, is there much else?

I love them, I have had some friends that had major problems with them. They are always overheating(g60 and vr6) My buddys g60 caught on fire twice! I don't remember why though. If i had some extra cash though, I would get one, I fukin love those cars!

Yes, I had a turbo rado for a year or so, until it disappeared on a tow truck and was never seen again.

The decision is heavily weighted on price. If its a g60, and cheap enough to justify swapping in a 2.0 NA motor (w/ATP or Kinetic turbo kit) or a 1.8t (better) then do it. IF its a vr6, get it now. The VR6 is your daddy. With either motor, you need a Peloquin diff even for daily driving...VW transmissions suck massive ass and love to grenade. They used aluminum rivets at the ring-gear to diff, which of course machine themselves. Timing chain replacement is pretty straightforward. Aside from this, the mechanical side is solid.
The electrical side is a disaster. Buy a multi-meter because you're going to need it. Coil packs will fail continually, fan switch will fail, dash lights will burn out (swap with an mk3 dash), and the spoiler will probably stop working and replacement motors are starting to become worth their weight in gold.

With all this crap said, vr6 corrados are the coolest fwd cars on the road. You lie down in the motherfucker, the engine howls, it spins like a sewing machine because the VR is essentially an L6, and people will constantly ask you what the car is called and tell you how its mega-awesome. Oh, you can bolt on a used vortech with C1's (i think) chip and make 350whp. These cars are really starting to bring a premium. Expect "decent" quality corrado slc's to bring $10k plus regardless of title designation or mileage.

My friend had a SC one, red with black leather, man that car was so sweet, except the SC died and the car was slower than my 1.5 automatic civic at the time.
But I have always liked them, ever since I lived in Germany, I would have to agree with Hustler, coolest WWD out there.

I could do 3rd gear high rolls and get a quarter from the dash into the rear hatch area. It was really safe for a 19-year old.

mine would go from 0-172 in less than 1-mile, and ran an 11.8 (with a 2.7 60', lol) at 116mph in the 1/4. I had a "eurosport" 6-speed with custom ratios that I bought off a friend (who had a 740whp gti that he drove daily). 2nd went out to 67, 3rd went out to 114mph, and it did 80mph at 2600rpm in 6th. That car was a monster. I still miss it.

Unless you sort the car out like Hustler did, Corrado = Parts car :)

If you're looking for a VR, make sure the timing chains are in good shape. They usually get sloppy at 100k. The trans has to come out to do them, so not only is it a good bargaining chip if they haven't been done, it's the perfect opportunity to drop in a peloquin or quaife.

If you're thinking of a G60, stop.:bang: I realize ATP and all sorts of other companies make turbo conversions and Lysholm swaps, but you can make way more power with either the VR or swapping in a 20V.

fuck quaife. They suck at life, and told me my 2-week old, $900 diff was not covered under warranty because the warranty doesn't apply to all parts of the diff, only the internals.

Peloquin is where it's at.

I sheared the teeth clean off 1st, 3rd, and 4th in an 02A and Peloquin rebuilt the diff under warranty. Chunks of teeth were falling out of the planetary gears as I wrapped it up for shipping. :giggle:

Peloquin is also $200 cheaper.

you're the only person who's destroyed one. I talked to Gary about making a diff for miatas a couple years ago.

Well it looks like I'm getting me a 1992 corrado SLC VR6 for $1300.

Salvage title, and recently was lightly rear ended, so it needs a bumper and hatch, but still, I fucking love this car already. The guy before said there's a 3" exhaust and I don't doubt that, it's loud and sounds 100000x better than my miata. Has neuspeed lowering springs and some KYB shocks, plus a cone filter, recently replaced transmission, urethane control arm bushings, new steering wheel, and recently replaced cooling system.

Some electrical shit doesn't work like the mirror adjuster on the drivers side, the rear wing:( ( I love those things when they do work), A/C, Door handle, and a few other small things, but hey, its not like i'm paying for a perfect car at $1300.

Is this a really good deal like I think? I don't really care what you gays say, because i'm in love with the car already.

This isn't tooo bad of an idea right? $1300 is less than what the car is worth in parts, no? This car is bitchin, picking it up tomorrow if all goes as planned.

Oh and hustler, any more info on that vortech with C1's chip stuff? It sounds like a good upgrade, but is that a specific blower or something?

Shit this will put back the turbo miata plans some... but i get a corrado.

Yeah, that's a good deal. It's been a few years, but I almost bought a corrado from a friend of mine a while back and looked into them. Even then the VR6 models were fetching ridiculous prices. They seem to only have gone up in price.

Should be fun with the suspension. The one I almost bought had a suspension so stiff it would hop every bump in the road, but it sure did stick in the corners!

Be prepared to pay a bit for the needed parts though.

I had a t4 on mine too, it was durty.

A few companies make a kit with a V1 blower. Its a really easy bolt-on deal, you just have to tap one hole for mounting purposes in the head. At just 8psi, you'll pull base model c5's pretty hard. C1 makes a chip that you just plug in, you can run any injector size, and they cars basically run "almost" as well as a stand alone system. If you're only less than 300whp, then that's what you should go with.

Vr6's howl like no other motor. You can use MK3 parts for the AC system, but most of the other electrical stuff is from MK2 generation cars.

Sounds sick, I love his car.

He made a custom manifold and did all the IC piping himself, its an air-to-water setup. Pretty clean. I know it was tuned somewhere in the North East...IIRC it was supposed to be the "way to go" as far as tuning.

You are correct too, VRs sound damn sexy. A chick in my development has an MKIV R32, I cannot help but look out the window every time she winds it up :)

Great cars. Plus the 'rrado is just so damn sexy.
