it's a thing because the dress is blue and black and your feeble mind thinks it's white and gold like a n00b.

it also probably thinks A and B square are different colors:

 

My wife thinks it is white and gold as well. It is clearly black and blue.
We are getting a divorce.

 

The photo is a bit over exposed.

The black is lit at the top by a yellow incandescent bulb. The photo was taken with daylight white balance.

The blue is blue.

I cannot brain how people come up with gold and white.
