What do I call my turbo?

I keep having people ask me what kind of turbo I have. I don't know what the cool answer would be. My first instinct in Garrett, but I don't think that is what they are looking for. I'm sure if I said "small ball bearing" they would be confused. Please help.:giggle:

RotorNutFD3S 07-05-2009 08:39 PM

Just say Garrett GT2554R. IDK what the cool answer would be, but that answers the question. If they ask any further, seems you already know it's ball bearing and water cooled. There's not much more to tell them unless you get into compressor maps, efficiency range, etc.

magnamx-5 07-05-2009 08:46 PM

The more detailed you come across the less of a newb you seem.

Most people have asked me if mine was a T3 or T4. They're usually idiots, so I tell them it's a T1000.

You could entertain them and say its a T2 dumbass; get your shit straight.

Savington 07-05-2009 11:43 PM

GT2554R rolls off the tongue like herpes. I usually say "small T25".

I always say I don't know what turbo it is or it's a "stage III" kit. That way I can hang out with all the vw and evo kids.

Doppelgänger 07-06-2009 08:34 AM

I hate when people ask me "what turbo i'm running"...and when I say 'gt2650r' they usually looked stumped...like they wanted me to say something cool.....T88? 100mm? 20g? I dunno...

Next time, i'll smart off with something like "a type-r 37" or some crap like that.

skidude 07-06-2009 09:38 AM

On a side-but-related note:

What do ricers mean when they ask "what stage is your turbo"? I have been asked this before. Next time I will just say "stage 7c+".

stage 20g's. It's a marketing ploy.

the_man 07-06-2009 09:58 AM

It's the ricer community's way of dumbing down various upgrade packages. The "stage 1" kit gets you (say) 20hp over stock. Stage 2 is (say) 50hp over stock and "stage 3" is (say) 75hp over stock. That way they don't actually have to know what the constituent parts are or what they do, only that "stage 2" will run with a Mustang and "stage 3" will be make them the shit.

Clutches are often sold the same way, different levels of holding ability are sequentially higher "stages."

Personally I feel that it's also a way to ensure that the fucktards don't know what they're buying so that they can be sold unnecessary parts at various times. For example, it may be possible to eliminate intake/exhaust restrictions and make another 20hp on the stock turbo, but why bother, when you can charge 5 times as much by selling them a new turbo that they don't need that still flows through the same shitty restrictions and only makes 20hp over stock? Bundling the stuff together also avoids those pesky customers who don't just want a kit to give them a specified power level, but who actually understand what parts they want.

l_bader 07-06-2009 10:04 AM

Just reply, "custom". Then walk off...

- L

Doppelgänger 07-06-2009 10:08 AM

Yeah, it always bothers me when people use "stage xx" when describing something...

It's fun to stump them and ask exactly what the difference is between 1 and 2 or to even ask exactly what makes it stage 2 or 3.....morons.

skidude 07-06-2009 10:10 AM

That is pretty much what I did, trying to figure out what the fuck they were talking about. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about, and they continued to ask even after I said it was custom.

the_man 07-06-2009 10:45 AM

I've seen people ask about "stage 1, 2 and 3 weight reduction." I guess a lot of the ricer shops call "stage 1" weight reduction the easy stuff that anybody can do in 5 minutes (floormats, spare, jack, etc.) and then the progressively higher stages require progressively more work (full carpet removal, rear seat removal, AC removal, PS removal, etc.). I find it an ingenious way to separate fools and their money.

AlexO35 07-06-2009 10:54 AM

That "stage" crap is all left over Gran Turismo BS. I never saw any of it until the first game came out. Now were stuck with it. Especially in turbine wheels. No one even knows what that crap means.

y8s 07-06-2009 10:58 AM

stages havent been used right in years.

the intent was to provide a system you could build on without having to remove shit you already put on. if you go to multiple shops, the stage system is pointless because they probably aren't the same stages.

example:
stage 1: base greddy kit
stage 2: ECU + injectors
stage 3: turbo back exhaust + intercooler

now it's all just bullshit

if someone asks what turbo you have, just take your last name (or username) and attach it to one of these words:

-speed
-spec
-tuned
-racing
-tech
-formance
-master
-werks

some great examples from this thread:

Trentspeed
y8spec (i own this domain whee)
bad-tuned
the man racing
Doppeltech
Perezformance
Hustlermaster
Brainwerks

so i have in my car a y8spec kit.

That gives me a Turboner.

I've got a custom SixWerks Racing kit in a box right now waiting to go on it. Once it is installed SWR will tune it, too.

Waste $60 and throw away the product, but keep the box in your car. When someone asks you what turbo you have, or if the car is turbocharged, just whip out that box and proclaim you've got the Turbo Fuel saver!! Shit works, son!

Doppelgänger 07-08-2009 06:25 PM

lol@list

When people see the intercooler and ask if the car is boosted..i tell them yes, usually the next question "is it turbo or supercharged?"...sometimes i'll answer with "superturbowhipplenitrouscharger type 1"...or i'll say I have a simply DIY eBay kit running 5psi :giggle:

cueball1 07-08-2009 08:54 PM

What turbo is that? Tell em it's a Garrett housing but it's been gutted for better spool. Better yet, it's the new F-1 unit Toyota's using. (GTP works too)

mx5tunerchallenge 09-03-2009 02:24 PM

just tell people it is a garrett gt2554r, characteristics include quick spool up good for low and mid range power can be compared to a supercharger feel because of how good the response is. Alot of the 90-93 owners use this turbo because of there lower displacement engine. All in all this is a good turbo and runs out of head room around 210 to 240 hp.
