We bought a 52" Samsung plasma on a black friday 2 years ago for $580. Super happy with it for the money we spent back then.

If you watch TV during the day, you want an LED TV. The Plasmas don't do well in direct light. However in optimal TV-watching lighting, the Plasmas gives more contrast and deeper blacks, aside from costing less. Downside is that they are still more susceptible to screen burn, and that they do use more energy.

If I were doing it again, I'd do the same exact thing I already did. I picked up a little Samsung soundbar off Woot for $80 and the one remote controls both units. Slick and Easy.

Don't waste your money on a Smart TV. You can buy a ChromeCast (as mentioned earlier) for $35 that does virtually the same thing, or if you have an XBOX 360 or PS3 or whatever it also does about the same thing.

Good luck. And if your current turdbox is still working, don't buy anything. OR sell it before it craps out again and buy something else

Update on this. Forget if I mentioned, but our older TV magically started working again after a full power down cycle, as opposed to trusting it to turn on once a video signal was detected. Wife suggested we visit Best Buy anyways since we were in the same parking lot getting some sushi.

Came home with a 55" LED Samsung, and a 2.1 Samsung sound bar. Both work out of box specials, the TV was $900 normally, we got it for $705, the sound bar was $299 normally, we got it for $150.

It's absolutely gorgeous, although watching my favorite transformers, I can now definitely tell the difference between a real shot of OP, and when he's computer generated and about to transform. Meh, I'll take it!

The funny part is we went from a 41" to 55", but with the minimal frame on the new one, it isn't any bigger.

Little late to the game, but I got a 65" Samsung LED a few years ago and love it. Got it on a black friday sale, so it was a good deal, at the time anyways. I still have an old 42" panasonic plasma as well. I really like the plasma image quality, but mine is a glossy screen and made it very annoying to use in our living room area. It works great as a dark movie room TV or for games.
