Meaning, highest revving production engine in a car that's attainable by normal people and not the ultra rich.

I want to say the one in the S2000 before they increased its displacement in 2002 or the 4AG(something) that came in the AE86 Totoya, but I could be wrong.

Doesn't rev more then 9K.

I used to have a video somewhere of the 4AG or something going to 14k, I could be wrong though.

 

How do you define production? I only say that b/c people have swapped in high reving production motorcycle engines into lightweight kit cars. 14-15k revs iirc.

 

Depends. Does it have to make power in those upper revs? What year range are we considering?

 

For attainable cars, it looks like an all-honda races on the piston side. The BMWs are close, with the new M3 V8 hitting 8400rpm. To me that's a whole lot more impressive than an S2000 F20C that sings to just a little more with less than half the displacement.

 

The rotary goes pass 9K.. the factory tach just doesn't but the motor will keep singing pass that point. The stock tranny just doesn't like to shift at anything above 9k.

I know the 20v 4ag motor with some adjustments will rev into the 10k but from the factory the motor didn't rev that high IIRC

 

Any year really, I would imagine it would have to make power up top, otherwise whats the point of revving that high.

20 valve. It is the motor all the AE86 guys drool over and it is not a bad motor but just a pain to do the swap. It has 5v per cylinder, IIRC 3 intake and 2 exhaust.

I would have to say the 1960's Honda S500 / S600 is bar none the highest revving production car. 10,000 RPM IIRC.

 

The big thing they made about the S2k was the 120hp per Liter. The BMW is 111 which isn't bad either. But the M3 earlier models had bearing failure. I don't think the S2k had that type of problem.

Are you talking stock production or the ability to modify? Don't Cosworth engines spin high?

The 420a redlines at a whopping 6500rpm, but it makes 150 hp all the way to it.

 

Tesla roadster goes to 14,000rpm, with a nice flat torque curve all the way there.

I pulled up next to a guy in a caged AE86 with an AIM dash once. The guy said it was a 20 valve swap and I had no idea what he meant, but it must be quick because he put a length on me off the stoplight. Suprised the hell out of me.
