Any of the old british cars it was based on meet the criteria, especially the Lotus Elan.

944s are dope, but you are not going to find cheap parts for them. I think the miata really is the best buy in terms of price, weight, rwd, and junk yard parts availability. I think a fox body or old 86-94 (i think) f-body are the next best things. An ls1 fiero isn't bad.

they run really well on a road track, and are very cheap. If I ever put together a drag strip car, it will be a turbo ls1 in an old camaro like that.

I really don't care for other peoples oppinions when it comes to degrading a miata as a pure chicks ride, many people on the street do this and it sucks, well blow that cheese off their face when your miata goes swoosh past them!@80+

Early 70's Alfa GTV. Live rear axle, though. In CA you don't need to have it smogged. DOHC but only 2 valves/cyl. Everyone will hate you if you don't keep it original.

I had a 73 Volvo 142 in college. Same idea but heavier and way, WAY uglier. Very cheap (< $1k for a nice one). Pathitic engine but nobody will care if you mod the hell out of it.

like a miata but not?
another vote for 85->87 corolla gts. other than the solid rear axle its basically the same idea.
dont like that?
small F/R is a hard combo... rx7's sa22->fd (but I like first gen the best), 240sx... older celica/supra, Im getting toward the shallow end of the pool here...

I say MR2 or miata. Both have the parts suport and avialability that is reachable for the average enthusiast both can be wicked fast and super sticky. I wish the woulda found a way to make a lighter coupe version of the miata but ohwell taking the top off makes Fuel pump swaps easier. And that is why god invented roll cages.

240sx, those cars have a lot of support even for the stock 2.4liter that we stuck with here.

LS1 swap reduced the cost in the long run by a good bit... and makes the car fun enough to justify driving it.
