The "What's In My Box?" Game

Ok you pack of uncouth sleuths, put on your thinking caps for a round of "What's In My Box?"

Your hints:

- It's going on my '99 Miata. I'm in the middle of swapping a 2004 MSM 6 speed drivetrain into the car, which started life as a total base model car with roll-up windows.

- It's not something you would see walking around the car. This includes if the hood was open.

- It's absolutely essential in a performance car.

- It has no wires going to or from it, nor fuel or water connections.

Clutch.

Ryan_G 02-08-2013 01:37 PM

Diff

EDIT: Looked at box again and realized how small it was. I revise that to clutch.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Miater 02-08-2013 02:55 PM

I don't think hustler will fit in there.

hobbs 02-08-2013 03:05 PM

Damn you im trying to work.
Wasn't ordered from mo so something over priced? LOL Just kidding.
I'm gonna say clutch box looks small but what ever.

thenuge26 02-08-2013 05:44 PM

Steering wheel? Eh never mind you would see that walking around the car. New suspension or diff bushings?

Diff in a box!

I couldn't believe it fit in that box, but there it is. 2004 Miata Tochigi-Fuji LSD in a 6 speed-friendly 3.90 gear ratio with only 40k miles.

(My base-model roll-up window '99 had an open diff.)

Good guesses, although my dildo shift knobs are usually delivered in a cardboard tube, but then I'm not buying in quantity.. ;^)

How is a differential "not something you would see walking around the car"?

thenuge26 02-08-2013 07:45 PM

I thought the same thing. But I pulled up behind my '99 just now after I got home from work, and the muffler covers it.

Yeah, you're right... I should have been more specific.

"It's not something you would see walking around the car unless you're five inches tall, have a flashlight, and are standing in the space normally occupied by the PPF."

Fixed.

gearhead_318 02-09-2013 06:09 PM

I'd have guessed 3.63 gears.

18psi 02-09-2013 06:17 PM

I hope you bought MSM axles for it cause it wont work with your regular ones

Really? The T-F is out of a regular old six speed car, not a MSM. I thought the '99 axles would fit. No?

If I had a LSD already and was just re-gearing because of the 6 speed I'd think about the 3.63's, although I don't know if Im going to have the HP to pull that much gear anyway. Also, along with street and track days, I want to Auto-x the car occasionally, even though my mods will put me in SSM where I'll be eaten alive. A little extra acceleration from the 3.90's may help me a little bit there, although no gear is gonna help me against the COT Wing/Taking It All Very Seriously crowd.. It's moot anyway; since I had to buy a LSD I just went with the lowest factory gear I could find.

Yes.

I think he was basing that off of your statement in the first post that "I'm in the middle of swapping a 2004 MSM 6 speed drivetrain into the car." I made the same assumption.

If the diff had come out of an '04-'05 MSM, then you'd also need the axles from the same car. These were incompatible with all other 1.8 differentials, and visa-versa.

My bad; I should have been clearer about the diff coming from a different car. I found it a week or so after the MSM motor and trans came.

18psi 02-09-2013 10:45 PM

yeah I thought you said MSM. nvm, should fit otherwise
