My plans was to wake up go to the gym, lay by the pool, go site seeing and then hit a bar or restaurant. The beaches in TX are not of the picture-perfect tropical variety. Doesn't matter if you're in Galveston, Corpus or South Padre, they don't have sparkling clear blue-green water if that's what you're looking for. It's all kind of brown due to the currents in the gulf churning up sediment, just the way it is. Galveston has a couple good seafood places by the piers, or at least they used to. They really took it in the ass from Hurricane Ike last year and I'm not sure how things are there now. But it might be worth a day trip if you need to escape the mother-in-law.

Almost forgot, NASA Johnson Space Center is half an hour south of downtown and they give a decent tour. A lot of it is kid oriented but they've got plenty of rocket parts too.
