I share shop space with a bunch of my buddies, and while windows are fair game, paint (even on beaters) is strictly off limits. I'd smash nuts with a hammer most quick like if I came in and found that someone had written in the dust on any of my paint.

 

there are shop owners and then there are shop rats.

1 set of people generally care
1 set doesnt give a ---- as long as they can get a shop deal, rip off parts or get them for free.
