Congrats man. That's about the only thing worth selling a nice miata like yours for.

RussellT94 09-01-2012 11:24 PM

Congrats, guess the Miata isn't the best for a car seat.

My wife and I expecting our first, due date is Feb 1. Thankfully we are expecting a boy as well.

hustler 09-01-2012 11:29 PM

cat > little human

but congratulations on making a child.

18psi 09-02-2012 12:18 AM

Having a happy family > being a lone homo with cats that can't tune an n/a miata.

jk jk ilu :giggle:

If he's going around having sex with women...... he shouldn't have had one in the first place.

thanks. my sister still says I can't be objective about my own child, but I think he's super cute.

Many congrats Matt! Nice looking kid.

Meg keeps reminding me to pack my bag for the hospital, but I have 2 weeks left, so 'they' say. So what would you recommend bringing to the hospital?

Keep the miata.

Keep the miata.

I dont use the miata and hate leaving the money tied up in it. some day maybe I'll get another.

I had bags packed for a long time because we didn't go to the hospital until 41 weeks, 4 days.

Here is how you pack:
you:
typical weekend trip size bag and stuff. a backpack is plenty.

her:
let her pack what she wants, then remove all the clothes except a robe and outfit to go home in. like 6 month maternity yoga pants and a button up shirt that fits GIANT BOOBS. seriously, bigger than they are now.
maternity bra
nursing pads
hard candy to suck on
flushable toilet wipes
throat lozenges (screaming)
lip balm
hair bands (and extras)

misc:
ipod and speakers,
heating pad,
phone chargers,
gatorade,
fizzy sugary drinks,
bite size finger food mostly for you (they may not let her eat but you can sneak stuff),
miso soup mix is good--just get a large cup of hot water from the coffee vendor.
refillable sports water bottles,
map of walkable takeout places,
tennis balls in a sock for masage,
unscented / baby lotion for your hands (washing will dry them out)
a folder for your wife's hospital paperwork
a folder for your baby's hospital paper work
pen and paper
a baby care book like the American Academy of Pediatrics "Caring for your baby and young child" so you're not totally lost once you're holding him/her.
a travel outfit for baby that is easy to put on
a blanket and hat for baby

very important:
car seat properly installed and inspected
your wife's ID and insurance forms
your ID

You really don't need "entertainment" stuff since you'll be doing stuff the whole time.

If you REALLY want to be a boss, get "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin and read that ASAP.

We were really prepared and even though shit was hard and long (do NOT leg Meg "Push" before she feels the urge to push) we ended up with a healthy little baby and no caesarean for Jenn. Surgery sucks!

curly 09-02-2012 04:12 PM

If you have ANY plans to sleep in the hospital, the number one complaint I get is the pillows. They're plastic (vinyl?) so we can easily clean them, but that means they don't breath, and your head over heats in seconds. So bring your own.

Pen2_the_penguin 09-02-2012 04:49 PM

Temporary threadjack:

when my wife went into labor, it was late, we were watching Boondock Saints 2, and it was starting to snow. What did we do? We only had my miata running at the time, so we hopped in that turbo biznatch and flew to the hospital. I never thought i'd spend so much time in the hospital, my wife barely remembers any of it before giving birth. I remember every hour.

We dont have vinyl pillows at our hospital, we got the ones similar to airline pillows... no cushion at all. Felt like someone stuffed cotton balls in a paper cloth sack and called it a pillow. I had an easier time in BMT than I did at that hospital for that reason. The cafeteria knew me too well by the end of it. Wife handled it like a bauce, and little girl came into the world like a true champ.

my one most memorable moment was our nurse, she was hot. Her name was Britain, and she helped me to physically massage my wife's breasties before trying to breast feed. It was the most awkward, hottest semi-public situation I have ever been in. Wife remembers me drooling over that event. She showed me how to massage wifey boobies, then took my hands with hers on the boobies, and proceeded to "show" me how its done.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD:
If you bring your own pillows or towels or linens, bring the ugliest, brightest, non-white ones you have. Or else you will not get them back.

I once had a great dream about making love with a fox. The animal type of fox.

Advice tip on babbies:

IF you have babby you can not set up a distillery in your basement. Nor can you go to burning man for the first 6 months

Saml01 09-03-2012 07:14 PM

Congratulations man. He's beautiful.

In other news, I want to reproduce. :-(

how girl get pragnent?

revlimiter 09-03-2012 08:45 PM

Congratulations! My first day as a daddy was just about 11 months ago. It was the best day... It's an amazing ride. Enjoy every minute.

The first 10 days were longer than any others in my life. Then the 2nd 10 days zoomed past. Now she's standing on her own and trying to walk. I expect in a week of subjective time she'll be taking the car out on dates and telling me to fuck off.

BTW, I've not sold either Miata. :)

y8s 09-03-2012 10:14 PM

my sister (now aunt sis) asked me several times a day if "babby was formed".

you're right about the first ten days. I'm not even there yet and this little guy tries to suck on anything and everything near his face (he has a penchant for large breasts).

He is also a chain pooper. within a 5 minute span he will poop in a diaper, poop on the outside of the just-removed diaper, and then poop in a fresh, new diaper.

but i can't fault him for that. i poop a lot too.

sixshooter 09-04-2012 01:14 AM

Congrats, Y8s. I didn't see my first one born and will certainly miss the second (we are adopting). All the best to you and your family.

18psi 09-04-2012 08:01 AM

You should just keep the miata because in no time you'll be teaching your son about MOAR BOOST and the miata is perfect for that:D

m2cupcar 09-04-2012 08:20 AM

Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. Y8s!

Children are great. I has two, currently 6 and 8. 1st/3rd grade.

My miata is our third vehicle. In a two income family, a miata has to be at least a third vehicle. For this forum, realistically even in a single income family a miata needs to be a third vehicle, as it will be being messed with a lot of the time. So one vehicle for the earner, one child-capable vehicle for the primary care giver / second earner, and then the miata.

RE: carseats: They fit forwards, once the child is old enough to ride in a forward-facing carseat. Pass airbag disabled, natch.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1346918101

So. You don't have to sell the maita. You just need it to be the third vehicle.

In the interest of ultimate safety, he wont be riding in the miata in a seat. I know you disagree, but we all raise our kids how we raise our kids.

It's not that I "can't" have the miata anymore, it's that I'm just finished with it and ready to move on. I've owned it since new in 2001. That's a long time.

TurboTim 09-06-2012 01:36 PM

So you got your miata brand new? In college?

Braineack 09-06-2012 01:38 PM

y8s is older than you think... i was in college in 2001, and y8s thinks im young.

Vashthestampede 09-06-2012 02:35 PM

Congrats Y8S!

Still unsure if I want to have any kids or not. I've watched all my nieces and nephews grow up (bros and sis are 20 years older than me) so I have some experience with what its all about.

fmowry 09-06-2012 03:01 PM

Congrats and I'm with Mobius. 8 year old in the Miata in child seat, airbag disabled.

Accident avoidance trumps accident survival. But to each his own. My wife agrees with Y8s.

Braineack 09-06-2012 03:13 PM

my wife just wants me to sell the miata regardless... :(

lsc224 09-06-2012 03:15 PM

Congrats!

Had my Miata before my son was born, now on my 3rd Miata, 9 years after my son was born.

kenzo42 09-06-2012 03:55 PM

Cats and babies do not mix - toxoplasmosis.

Congrats!

It was more of a stupid inside joke.

More like me saying to Y8s, "Don't listen to them saying that you need to keep your car, change is good! Sell it! Sell it!"

Reason being, I'm buying it from him.

Faeflora 09-07-2012 03:24 AM

My response to all of you childlickers i mean childlikers is

vasectomy.

Vasectomy for the win.

Plus when you sleep around you get extra funtimes with the unprotected P in V cummage statement, "OOPS".

You are a VERY LUCKY man in that case.
Seriously, DO NOT mess up that wonderful machine.

Zaphod 09-07-2012 08:28 AM

Your doing it wrong...

first I had my NB - then my wife, then we got 2 kids. Now there was the chance to buy another NA to make my wife happy and get both kids in the cars, when we go for a nice weekend ride with the Miatae... Win.;)
(Needless to say - both our kids love the cars and will probably going to want to drive them in a few years... :hustler:)

I gave in to the pressure to buy dogs when I was waffling on the subject. I love them dearly but, if I could go back in time and do it over again, I would not have gotten them.

Imagine thinking that every day of your child's life.

Especially considering dogs are a lot less of a complication than kids are.

Indeed it's true and I'm well aware of how lucky i am. I swear to uphold it's awesomeness and integrity. (wish i could remember the line from Gran Torino when Walt left his car to the kid)

On the topic of car seats...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...L._AA1500_.jpg

I got mine at Amazon. I stalked it using camelcamelcamel for a few weeks till a low price appeared. And it's great. Extremely robust. It has a heavy metal frame and is very nicely put together. Your baby will be too small for a few months, but once you can get him out of the infant bucket and into a real seat, DEW EET. My little girl has been riding in her Proride since 3 months old. So much safer than the damn bucket.

And she's almost big enough for forward-facing. That means Miata drives.
