Windows8...touch based, awesome...only thing i didn't like was the lack of a start button, but it is there now.
app support is slowly coming out....
OS is fast in my opinion.

Because it's absolutely retarded to design and implement an operating system that treats a laptop like a silly like tablet and prevents you from disabling features that makes it impossible to just surf the internet let alone actually function as a computer. If I wanted a touchscreen, I'd use my phone or buy a tablet.

I'd honestly rather buy a mac, and I've been an Apple hater since the IIg.

Just download Start Menu 8, add your start button and menu back, disable the Metro crap, and have it boot straight to the desktop. What's the problem?

I did that. But I still couldn't disable the touchpad gestures that bring out the right control panel and top menus in some programs.

It would still open some programs in that environment and none of these stupid "apps" have a fucking menu bar or even a way to close the damned application.

and I couldn't disable the silly hot-corners. So when I'd scroll down to the start button I was able to get back, the start screen hot-corner thing would often still get clicked and I'd go back into the silly Metro UI screen.

I shouldn't have to download a third party software just to get the operation system to be exactly the same as it was in win7. it's stupid as hell. I just wanted a cheap laptop to use to surf the web while I'm watching TV and to be able to do light computing.

I lasted about an hour, and my wife only lasted about 5 minutes on it after I installed Start Menu 8 before we both gave up and it got boxed back up.

The OS is a joke, Microsoft is a joke.

Windows 8 is the end of Microsoft. All they had to do was not change anything. "Dear Microsoft. Windows 7 is great. Don't change shit."

That's it. That's all they had to do. Leave it as it is.

Listen, Microsoft: If my computer ships in a configuration such that it has a CD drive, a connection for an external monitor, a cat-5 or higher network connection, a form factor that is anything other than "hand held", more than one speaker out connector, or rear facing USB ports, it probably shouldn't have windows h8 on it.

Alternatively: if my device is a tablet or phone....

....it still shouldn't have windows 8 on it...because obviously your "surface" tablets and "windows phones" haven't yet transcended "paperweight" status. I feel sorry for the fools who have bought windows phones on 2-year agreements and must now wait 2 years to get out of their digital hell.

Take windows 8, Stop supporting it, Crunch it up into a little ball, Throw it away, and don't ever hint at your treasonous acts against mankind EVER again.

Most importantly: Stop fucking up the "computer operating system". If you want to take over the mobile device market, then design an operating system for mobile devices. Windows 8 is not it.

More important: don't install it on computers.

Completely agree. I have raged so many times over my Win8 that its basically a matter of time before I overcome my laziness and get rid of this stupid system finally.

Its seriously worse than anything I've ever used before. And that includes windows 95 and windows ME lol

3 Ways to Disable Windows 8 Gestures

Go to "Default Programs", change all the defaults from the Metro apps to whatever you want. If you open one by mistake, hit Alt + F4 to close like you would for any other app.

Start Menu 8 does this.


Seriously, Win8 is terrible out of the box. I get it. I used it for 5 minutes before I started researching how to change it.

But then 10 minutes later I had it behaving exactly like Win7. The first time my wife used the computer she didn't even realize that it WASN'T Win7.

I was all ready to hate Windows 8. I got a laptop with a touch screen and everything.

It really is that bad. At least once per session I hit one of the stupid touchpad gestures Scott is talking about.

At one point I even rotated the screen somehow. The keys to do that are shift+alt+arrows, but I didn't have ANY hands on the keyboard so I have no idea how it happened.

I'm just waiting to get my MS3 installed and running so I can ditch Win8 for Ubuntu. Even Unity isn't this bad.

Played a little with 8 on a laptop with touch, no too bad. Using the finger on dialogues became more natural than using the mouse/touchpad. Felt like tablet with keyboard.
Would I use it for any real work, hell no. I'm set in my ways and like to know where things are (Office 2007 was a tough enough change). Change without improvements is not appealing.
For unspecific tasks I can use Ubuntu at home (cheap bastard laptop), but I tend to do most things on the dual monitor Win7 at work.

But I see the same tendency with other software (not only OSes), try to sell the next version with functions no one asked for and thereby obscuring the original killer functions. You can't stay with the old version since it's based on now obsolete components...

Except it then still stays super duper buggy, and still retains 98% of the terrible full blown retard features that you can't hide or get rid of or change in any way shape or form.

I did the whole start menu shell thing, as well as some other fetures that make it a bit less retarded to use. Still terrible.

My mom has a Dell all in one pc with touchscreen she uses at her house. I set it up for her etc and I get it. Windows 8 makes sense on that type of pc. I actually found the interface kind of fluent. the only bad part is WHY THE FUCK ARE "APPS' COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM INSTALLED "PROGRAMS". So if I buy a app from there store, this doesn't mean I bought the full program. Like office, it's the office app version not full blown office. WTF.

The whole idea of going back and forth between a desktop and their tile interface is retarded. If your interface was actually decent, I shouldn't ever have to go back to the desktop.

They need to take 2cents from Ubuntu's Unity or Gnome3. While those are still not as polished as I'd like. THEY MAKE FUCKING SENSE. Everything is right there in front of you, it can be used for touch and as a desktop easily. No switching between screens and shit.

Like what? Give me specifics. My Win8 desktop is virtually indistinguishable from Win7, other than a prettier log-in screen and faster boot time.

Mine lags/freezes all the time. Like when I leave it on but don't do anything for over 10 min, after I get back on and try to do anything, it will take about a minute for it to unfreeze and start working.

Its a few month old i5 PC, and all updates are done, and all scans/virus definitions/etc are all done, and it doesn't get used for anything besides browsing forums and the internet so no fancy games or programs loaded.

As for the features: screen options and resolution and desktop maintenance is a joke. Its all weird and stupid and unlike most previous windows versions. Task manager is 100x more complicated and also really weird and hard to really navigate and operate fast or easy. THere are a ton, I'll remember more later, but overall I think its a disaster.

Never experienced that. Mine is ready instantly (or as soon as the monitor clicks back on).

Wait -- if all it's being used for is browsing forums, how often are you having to change screen resolution? You're just looking for things to whine about.

Don't be a dumbass. For the record, I've had no problems adjusting screen resolution or using the task manager or anything else. I don't expect menus to look the same as they did in Windows 95. I turned off the features I didn't like and then forgot about them.

As I said before, Win8 sucked out of the box. But it's so quickly and easily modified into a Win7 copy that it's hardly worth whining about it.

I dont understand the point of a OS for a computer, to make it more like a mobile device, that requires third party hacks and registry edits to make it exactly like the previous operating system to be able to use it for the intended purpose.

Just me. I'll try out all the other hacks to remove all the silly gestures and hot-spots. But I dont understand how this Metro UI makes it an entirely new operating system version. Seems like they could have done the same with a software package loaded on laptops with a touchscreen and tablets. I see no reason for this to be installed on a PC or Laptop w/o touch screen.
