I really dont like the idea of having to install third-party freeware in order to improve the OS.

This x1000. It's all well and good if end/home users want to modify their shit, but it is completely unacceptable in an enterprise environment.

I'm skipping 8, it seems like the market will as well. MS seems to have a release cycle designed to expect everyone to skip every other major release (like ME and Vista).

What's bad is they forced the same GUI on Server 2012 as well, but once you learn the new quick keys and some powershell it's not as big a deal. There are too many good features for Server to not use it.

At least Vista introduced the Desktop Search (where you just type in the start menu instead of navigating your mouse through a maze of hover-to-open menus). When you add up all the time Microsoft raped from my hands in dealing with Vista, at least it was equaled by the amount of time I saved using the Desktop search instead of the old start menu.

I have yet to find ONE redeeming feature of Win8.

IF you use it on a giant touchscreen (like 27") its "clever" but that's as far as I'm willing to go. It was designed for a touchscreen and it works fine in that once you break your mental connection to "traditional" Windows UI and relearn everything from scratch.

But in a "traditional" desktop OS application? No. Just no.

My mom worked for Apple and Sun and does not want your pittance of an intern job.

10 years ago that would have been a killer feature. But even Win7 only takes ~30 minutes to install. The hardest part is downloading and burning the pirated copy of Windows since nobody packages install CDs with the system anymore.

And not that this applies to the general population but: I'm sure that feature will not work with and/or screw up my machine once I dual boot it. And even if it did, I don't want Asus' crapware back on my laptop. There's a reason I spent an hour uninstalling it all when I first booted up.

Then again, I'll probably install Win7 while I install Ubuntu.

Why are you dual booting? Just run VirtualBox.

Here's a short version of my list:

1. Native HyperV Support < this is so baller I don't even know what to do with my self
2. Faster boot
3. Faster shut down
4. Just as stable as Win 7 for me, I'm guessing most peoples instability comes from incompatible drives/bloatware
5. ability run apps on the 1/3 of the screen mode while using the regular desktop for the other 2/3s is incredible for things like chat or a music player
6. Integration tools for Microsoft Administration stuff is just awesome, much improved upon

Yes there are things that are different and suck (like wtf is "Shut Down" under settings?) but overall I think it's a better experience than Win7 if you give it a chance.

When you design an OS for the LCD, you have to design it kind of like a mental institution:

The OS must keep the LCD in the "safe area" with fully padded walls.
The OS must frustrate attempts to leave the "safe area"
The OS must appear as a happy place.
The OS must frustrate attempts to "break in" to the "safe area" from the "outside"
The OS must limit your ability to run programs or applications which may introduce you to the "non-safe area"
The OS must constantly do unexpected things to keep its inhabitants on their toes, being "ooh"ed and "awe"d by its design or function.

The problem with the mental institution model comes when you enter a sane and intelligent person into the mix. To the mentally incompetent, the institution is a permanent vacation. To the sane intelligent man, the institution is a prison, keeping him from doing greater and more meaningful things with his life. In fact, the sole existence and confinement of the mental institution may be enough to push a sane, intelligent, and sound mind over the edge.

Therefore, the purpose of Windows 8 is twofold:
1: A place to house the idiots.
2: An attempt to turn the rest into idiots.

My grandma can rock the world on her Kindle Fire, but give her my Nexus 7 and she is completely lost.

The minute I pick up her Kindle Fire and try to use it, I want to shoot myself in the foot. I spent 10 minutes one day trying to find the INTERNET BROWSER app before I gave up. When I did find it a couple weeks later, I was like "that's so fucking stupid, why do I have to select "Web" from a context menu to get to the internet?"

Think using windows 8 sucks? Working on and troubleshooting it is twice as fucking retarded.

1. Hyper-V is a joke. The ONLY reason anyone ever uses it is because it comes free with the OS.
2. It doesn't actually boot all the way because...
3. It doesn't actually shut down. Basically they just renamed "hibernate".
4. No comment, I haven't noticed any instability.
5. ? I do this with Win7 too.
6. I haven't used much of the admin tools, though I do like the super+x shortcut.

I thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster every day that I don't have any tests that run on Win8. We've been testing Server2012 for a bit now, and are starting to test Win8 as a client machine. Hopefully I can avoid it for as long as possible.

With how easy it is to run cracked Windows 7, I aint even mad. I dont have to pay those assholes any money anymore, and I dodnt have to use their new shitty OS.

I'm using Windows 8 on the desktop at home. I just work around the issues it has. That being, if you are just using a keyboard and mouse most everything is worthless about the new interface. When I bring up the tile menu I just type out the app name until it finds my app. The fact that the settings apps are under a different section of said menu when typing from the main one is annoying.

I just play games and browse on the thing at home, so it doesn't impact me as much. Occasionally I find myself accidentally using one of the apps that has the Win8 interface and I am confused and dismayed.

Otherwise, fantastic job Microsoft!
