Probably another generation or so before we get there, but $150 for 2TB is still pretty damn good, especially for a HGST drive. 7.5¢ / gig, assuming 1000/1000/1000/1000. That's very nearly lowest cost/mass ratio around. (The 1.5 TB drives can be had for around 7¢ / gig.)

yeah it shocked me when I did the math on it. I remember being excited about $5/Gig.

Mostly I'm looking for cheap storage for a RAID NAS. If I can get away with 80 bucks for two 500 gig drives, I'm stoked. Amazon is pretty close at about 55-60 each for any brand you want.

 

Stay away from 1.5TB drives, I've heard too many stories of them just hard locking. That might have been fixed but its worth it to stay away to not risk getting new old stock. The 2TB are ridiculously well priced. They are the cheapest data has ever been. I honestly doubt they will get much cheaper/GB until there is a new technology to replace them. SSD cost ration is way off atm.

Even though Moore's Law is about transistor packaging, aerial density (the mag storage equivalent) has been following a very similar curve and shows no sign of stopping. Every time we think we've run into some fundamental brick wall, they invent some exotic new technology to overcome it. Heck, remember when RLL came out in the 80's? It seemed like black magic- an instant doubling of capacity. Decoupled granular microstructure, GMR, TMR, PMR, now we have laser-assisted HAMR. Hell, they'll figure out a way to implement TPMR (Temporal Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) to take advantage of fourth-dimensional space.

I'd wager that we're in the last era of laptops with flywheels in 'em, now that SLC flash is becoming mainstream and affordable and densities are starting to approach usefulness for primary storage. For desktops and servers, I see at least another several generations happening. My bet is that we'll see a 1 PB hard disk.



****, I remember getting excited about $5 a meg! Seriously- it wasn't all that long ago that a 10 meg drive cost upwards of $2,000, and came with its own external power supply. When the ST296N came out, that drive was a game-changer.
