Would you do this?

Got a guy interested in my miata + cash for his 03 Corvette.

What would you do?

kotomile 06-26-2008 03:58 PM

Trade him engines

budget racer 06-26-2008 04:00 PM

no f**king way.

you would have to pay me to own a vette. my dad has a c5 convertible........i feel like i should have a hairy chest and gold chains around my neck when i am behind the wheel.

m2cupcar 06-26-2008 04:03 PM

Is it a good deal on paper? I'd do it if I stood to make money beyond what I'd sell my car for.

On paper, then yes. Id make money beyond what I would probably sell my car for.

I am just attached sentimentally. The time, blood, sweat and tears I put into the car not to mention all the research I did is whats holding me from just going YES.

+1.... It all depends on what condition the vette is in. if its taken care of, with decently low miles, and the deal was sweet (not alot of money on top on your part) id hella do it...just my .02

got any details/pics on this vette?

jayc72 06-26-2008 04:18 PM

If the Vette isn't a piece of shit I'd jump on it providing you aren't getting fucked.

Saml01 06-26-2008 04:21 PM

See for yourselves.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/car/733580196.html

Been swapping emails with him back and forth.

Zabac 06-26-2008 04:22 PM

Yeah, could go either way..don't you have like ultra low miles on your car?
Anyways, '03 Vette in good condition and no salvage history is worth two Miatae.

edit-looks nice, go drive it.

reddroptop 06-26-2008 04:25 PM

Can you afford the Vette?

If the answer is yes, then YES.

Otherwise, no.

wow, imo that thing is NICE!!!
now the only question is how much he wants on top....if its not too much, I would jump on that like a crackhead:D

cardriverx 06-26-2008 04:30 PM

ya how much are you putting in plus the miata?

Since the last email with limited details he told me my car is analogous to a 99 with a turbo he was looking at and the dealer wanted 9 grand.

I am in no way giving him 22,5 for his car. I figure 20 maybe 21 at the most.

So figure another 11 or 12.

Money isnt the issue. Its the sentimental value.

My girlfriend also wants me to get a Porsche, not a Corvette and I am also leaning toward a Porsche. Her words "If you are going to indulge. Indulge right".

Coming up on 23,000.

jayc72 06-26-2008 04:35 PM

Unless you've got $$$ or are willing to drive and old shitty one a Porsche is going to be nothing but a status symbol. Take the vette and drive the living snot out of it and have a blast. It'll be cheaper to mod a vette than it would be a Porsche.

Car looks nice, get it. Enjoy the magic of torque!

The only Porsche you are going to get is either the old stuff, (944, 928, 914/6, etc) or a boxter or a high mileage 99/00 911 C2.

Porsche's are EXPENSIVE to maintain, you think the insurance/tires/brakes/maint on a vette is going to be bad? Try double or tripling it with a 911.

These kinds of cars are NOT like our miata's that require no maint. Anything "upbrand" using the term loosely since a Chevrolet is in the equation, requires constant attention/money.

I was thinking of an 04 boxter, for about 25k. Which is doable, I have researched the prices.

As for maintenance, it cant be that bad. Porsche's have like the best track record for reliability from what I have seen.

Boxter is more of a chick car than a Miata. If you buy one you'll get a free sex change.

It isn't IF it breaks. When it breaks, or needs clutch/pads/tires ... then prepare to bend over. Insurance is going to be a little crazy too.

Saml01 06-26-2008 04:44 PM

Or maybe im just going a bit over the top with this. Im thinking out loud, right now.

I love my car, I have a smile on my face every time I drive it. I also love this community, not that I cant post here if I get the vette but still. I can also take that money that would go to the vette and put it in my miata, learn something new, occupy my time and have an even better car.

I'm not concerned about the car sex symbol, and I have a feeling neither is anyone else on this forum.

But you are right, I am sure it would be more expensive and I am used to doing my own work right now.

Ah well, I think its a bit over the top. Dont be surprised that I dont go through with it guys.

Also the gas mileage is making me frown, I get 25mpg average on the miata even though i dont drive much i wouldnt want to have to fill up twice as often with the vette.

Zabac 06-26-2008 04:53 PM

Just put more money in the miata, get a real suspension and real tires and go enjoy yourself on a track.

If you drive it semi-normal, you won't probably be that far off, especially on the highway.

Sam, Jay's comments notwithstanding; I've always found the Boxster the car I like the most but; if you're ever going to buy one, don't buy anything but an "S". If not, you'll end up regretting it (specially after owning a turbo Miata).

Just my 2 cents.

Exactly. Fuck, it's not like anyone here hits up the local gay bar on fridays, with the exception of hustler.

As for Sam, the maint really is THAT BAD. Go spend some time on 6speedonline, rennlist, pelicanparts, and whatever other porsche forums are the flavor of the week.

I read the entire 911 thread over on corner-carvers, and it is a good read. Boxster's might not get the full maint ass-reaming, but I doubt it.

If it came down to selling the miata, and spending more money on a boxter, I don't think I'd do it.

The only thing I could see myself moving up to would be a lotus. If I didn't give a shit about tracking cars, then other options are opened up such as supra's/vette's/nsx's/911's/etc. Those cars RAPE you on consumables.

For a street/cruise car, they are perfect, tracking them, you have to have $$$.

Thats pretty much what I am thinking of doing.

I have no problem slowly pouring more money into the miata even if it never comes back to me for reasons I previously mentioned.

Oh dude, youre preaching to the quire. Of course I would get an S, without a doubt.

------

I cant see myself letting the car go. My mom brings up a good argument "Do you really want to spend 12k right now". My GF brings up a good argument as well "Id rather see you driving a porsche". One of my friends says "The efforts you put into this car over the last 6 months are worth more then a corvette".
My other friends just want to see me in a corvette but then again they dont understand love and labor.

Dude, seriously. It's just a car. I've had my miata for the last 3 1/2 years. If someone offered a good trade from the miata i'd damn well consider it. It's just something new.

As for your GF saying she wants to see you in a porsche...fuck that noise. If you get a boxster you will be so disappointed and it'll put a very large damper on anything related to moving forward with cars. Every time I see someone in a Boxster all I can think about is how even at used prices you could have gotten a better car for half as much. (performing mind you).

Seriously...this love and labor stuff. It's silly, last I checked we weren't a forum full of dumb sap stories that get us on M.net Ride of the Month.

18psi 06-26-2008 10:00 PM

my .02 not that it matters:
boxters are fucking gay, they are like the redheaded homo retarded bastard stepchild of the porsche lineup...IMO
they are in no way fast, practical, or good looking for that matter, and cost an arm, leg testicle, and firstborn.
corvette will dominate as far as performance, is reliable, sexy as hell, and you get alot of car for your money. If i had to make a decision of upgrading to a corvette id do it in a heartbeat...
BUT
your mom really does bring up a good point: DO you REALLY wanna spend that much more money right now for a car you're not crazy about?
one of the most appealing things about the miata is how cheap it is and how cheap it is to make it fairly quick. its a fun little car that doesnt cost an arm and a leg.
though I love corvettes to death, and think they are some of the best cars FOR THE MONEY, id just keep your car just like you are doing......
now post some pics of ur car :D

I really don't want to spend 10k. Even if I take out a loan so I feel the pain less, its still 10k out of my pocket that I really don't need to spend right now. Part of me wants to say, to hell with it just get the car you only live once. But the sensible part of me of me says, you can get a corvette later once things settle into there own.

Youre right, it is just a car. But the love and labor thing is not just a sap story. I committed a lot of time to it and now to only get rid of it before I even have a chance to fully enjoy it.

Thanks for talking me out of the porsche guys, I appreciate it.

msydnor 06-27-2008 03:11 PM

Maintenance on vettes are not much..gas mileage is pretty decent too as long as your not on it hard. I know a few guys getting in the 20's under normal conditions.

My beater '86 Corvette would get around 19 mpg around town, and I hear the newer ones are a lot better. They're not quite the gas hogs you might (reasonably) expect them to be.

jayc72 06-27-2008 03:40 PM

I find that in most cases the right foot has a large impact on gas mileage.

18psi 06-27-2008 03:50 PM

I agree....ive talked to guys with c5's that get around 19-20 city and mid 20's highway, driving normal
