Just picked up a Black Friday AR pistol. I have an angled foregrip in my parts stash, would adding it invalidate my AR as a "pistol" ?

one of these:

Only if you put it on the buffer tube. Its a pistol until there is a stock on it.

ATF has previously said an angled foregrip is OK on a pistol. A vertical foregrip, on the other hand, puts it into the 'All Other Weapon' category and requires a tax stamp.

So before I put it on Armslist, any interest in the Gemini customs Ruger SP101 of mine?

Short update. Shop tried to low ball me on my AR lower, only offered me $150 in trade. So I went home and bought the PSA stripped upper and parts kit ($65 delivered). ARP was sold out of the barrel I wanted so I will get it later.
I looked into the 6.8SPC. I can't find ammo less than $1/round locally so I think I will stick with a .223 Wylde chamber.

$150 for a stripped AR lower? Holy **** you should have take the money and run out of there before the guy realized it paid you like 100 dollars too many. Its not like a couple years ago when a stripped lower was worth $200, they're a dime a dozen at $50 for decent ones.

Just picked this up tonight.

I remember selling one of those PlumCrazy poly AR lowers for about $300 during the last gun ban scare.

No, not a stripped one, lol.
Complete lower with Magpul MOE+ grip and rifle stock.
I got lucky with the mil spec trigger too. It comes in just over 5lbs.
I also was selling 3 Pmags, boresnake, flambeau case, and magwell + upper vise blocks.

I hope you still think $150 is low balling >.>;

Just got a Lone Wolf barrel for my G20. The stock chamber is far less supported to the point that even factory 10mm rounds get a little bulge. I was concerned about running my handloads through it, problem solved.

Pretty standard... unless it's something unique (like a PMR30), expect south of 50% actual value on a trade-in from a store or pawn-shop. However, you live in NC... put it up on Armslist for trade only, and list the guns you'll trade for. I don't normally encourage Armslist because I've never done a deal there where the guy didn't end up being a complete douche, but those were always for cash sales. For a straight-across trade for an equal value firearm, you're less likely to encounter any sketch.

ALSO...
Bushnell is having a rebate on their Trophy XLT scopes... $30 off. These scopes compare above Nikon Prostaff's and with this rebate, makes them cheaper for comparable models. For example... the 3-9x40 is $113 on Amazon... makes it $83.. helluva deal on a basic scope. I had the 4-12x40 AO and it was great on my .308 bolt-gun... took quite a few deer out past 300yds with that combo.

Here is the 3-8 on sale at Amazon:
Amazon.com : Bushnell Trophy XLT Multi-X Reticle Riflescope, 3-9x 40mm : Rifle Scopes : Sports & Outdoors Amazon.com : Bushnell Trophy XLT Multi-X Reticle Riflescope, 3-9x 40mm : Rifle Scopes : Sports & Outdoors

Here is the link to the rebate:
Bushnell - Promotions

Another really good deal if you're in the market is the Nikon Coyote series... they are Buckmasters with SideFocus in disguise with a BDC reticle tuned to standard 55gr .223 ammo. There's a 4.5-14x40 refurb in sale at Natchez for $180, which dips in to the "great ******* deal" category for a mid-range scope.

I am considering purchasing a couple 80% lowers. What brands have you used? A brief search yielded tactical machining as being a good lower and the juggernaut tactical jig being a better jig. Anyone have experience with these?

Anyone have a good answer on what, as a NYS resident I can legally purchase without having to register anything? AR style lowers, maybe something like a sub2000 if they're still around. Things are looking pretty crappy these days, and I want to be prepared.

Ares Armor is pretty damn fantastic. They also sell the jigs needed for finishing them out.

I like my EP armory lower so far. Easy to mill it with just the sticker with my HF drill press and a dremel, no jig required if you have a modicum of ability with tools. Fits retardedly tight to my upper, like you have to tap the takedown pins in and out with a hammer tight, thats not a complaint, thats bragging. I did minorly make the hammer and trigger holes a touch big and a touch low so I had to cut a little extra deep on the trigger pocket to get the safety to fit into the lower and to get the disconnector to detach from the hammer when cocking. But that means I got to set the takeup on the trigger to basically nothing with the milspec trigger, next to no movement between initially touching the trigger and dropping the hammer, just the 8ish pounds of force to overcome. I need to make an overtravel stop for it though because I've got tons of overtravel. Because of the oversized holes I did throw in a antirotation hammer and trigger pin set for piece of mind, wasnt exactly required. Only complaint is that the magwell is a little loose but I can fix that with a nylon tipped setcrew once I get around to it.

Best place on the net for reading up on 80% lowers.

Semi-auto rifle rules are pretty straightforward... ZERO features and you're good to go. No pistol grip, thumbhole stock, telescoping stock, muzzle device, bayonet/grenade, or anything scary... "Featureless" builds are widely sold in NYS. No need for purchase permit for long-guns and no need to register featureless builds. Don't forget... max 10rd mags, but at least you don't have to worry about bullet buttons yet. The picture below shows one of the more popular stocks, but there are several out there, and a few others that allow you to keep a regular AR15 fixed stock (like a Magpul MOE or regular A2-style) and just delete the pistol grip... some of the "non-pistol" grips are a bit funky, but very usable. Google image search "featureless ar15" and see what I'm talking about.

You can always just get Mini-14 or one of the Keltec's... there's also ARES Defense which makes the smoothest lower receiver I've ever seen... don't know if they'll sell you just a stripped lower.
ARES SCR? : ARES Defense Systems

This is a standard "featureless" build suitable for ban-states:

I'm pretty sure most places ship stripped lowers to NYS... find an FFL locally and buy like 5 Andersons from somewhere (Primary Arms has them for $40 and cheap shipping all the time).

Also... don't even consider an AR pistol build unless you want to shell out a ton of cash for a pre-ban pistol lower (pre-ban as in 1994)... for some reason New York has a 50oz weight limit for any pistol, and getting a post ban setup light enough is almost impossible. And handguards are illegal on pistols... this is what it will look like:

Thanks for that. I did a bunch of reading last night, and it all got so confusing.

There's a zillion places selling 80% lowers, and they all just have that "you must follow local law" disclaimer. Well, what, exactly, it the local law? Even the Wiki on the SAFE act made it sound like it wasn't possible. But, I know it is, because the local Gander Mtn. place sells AR type long guns right out of the store. Do I just register them on the spot? [I may just walk into one of those places and ask to see what they say.]

The other major consideration is price, which is why I'm looking at the 80% lowers. I really don't need to drop another 6-8 hundred into another rifle. However, there are some things that may offset the cost. I have a pre-ban SKS still in the original, unopened box. I have seen these going for incredible prices in my area ($400 for a used one???), so I may look into selling that or trying to use it as a trade.

Also, I have a pre-ban Colt. Match grade, competition model (h-bar, etc.) which is also NIB. Would I be better off just using that one than trying to build one? Of course, I'd have to register it, because it has that oh-so-dangerous bayonet lug.

Gotta do some reading and research. Thanks again for the straight info.

Yes, and we'll do it to ourselves once again.
There are still people waiting at the counter for fresh deliveries of 22 ammo since the last panic.
That being said, I made an impulse buy and bought a set of curved swimmers-cut AR500 plates last night. Since those pieces of **** yesterday were apparently armored, I figure it's just a matter of time before someone gets a hard on to ban it.
It's not entirely impractical on my part.
I like to be covered when I go into public ground during hunting season.
I've seen and worked on people shot right in the vitals by mistake during deer season.

Was there a particular thread, or do you expect that I have to search (noob)?

That Ares SCR looks nice, but I really don't want to spend that kind of coin at this point. I'm not quite sure I like the look with a sporter style stock anyway. BTW, the do sell the lowers separately now.

I have tomorrow off, and I'm going to hit a couple of local places (Dick's, Gander Mtn. Local gun shop) to see if they'll offer me a decent price on either the AR or the SKS. Maybe they sell on consignment. We shall see.
