Well considering its 9 pm and I should have been drinking hours ago I just went on a beer run. There was of course all domestics and some lame imports like flying dog and some other puke fest IPAs as well as the horrible rye beers that taste like pine air freshener.

So what's everyones favorite beer? I ended up defaulting to Yeungling tonight because i like it and it's cheaper then some. Otherwise I thought i might try Dos Equis, then decided to get it at the local mexican restaurant in a nice 32 oz iced mug tomorrow during lunch.

If you don't drink beer I basically don't care for your input :fawk:

I like Warsteiner, Baltika 5, Grolsche.

Warsteiner is good, though I've only had it one time and it was pretty much room temperature and flat. Grolsche is supposed to be pretty good, pretty sure I can get that here. Might try that as well.
Wish I could find that beer Y8s recommended.

Let me apologize in advance for off topic. My favorite beer is a nice dry red wine. If I want hard liquor, it is a perfect margarita. A perfect margarita is

2 parts good quality tequila over ice
1 Part triple sec or whatever Orange Liquor you prefer
1/2 part fresh squeezed lime.
Sip slowly and enjoy. Please, no blender or sweet and sour, that is not a margarita.

Now that brings back memories when I used to travel to the UK on business and they would take me out on pub crawls. It literally took 5 minutes minutes to draw a glass of guiness from the tap.

Not to mention the shit I got when I told them I don't like beer.

First, Flying Dog is made in Frederick Maryland, so unless you recently emigrated to Canada, it's not an import.

Second, do not judge Flying Dog until you have had their Road Dog Scottish Porter. Good stuff.

My absolute favorite beer of all time is one that I have only had a single glass of, and which no longer exists anywhere. In 2006 I was in Denver on business, doing a router commissioning at the Jefferson Pilot radio group's new studios. I'd brought with me the new kid in the engineering department to give him some field experience, and as it happens he was from Denver originally. On our last day, he took me to a pub called the Falling Rock, which is the sort of place where they actually explain to anyone who requests a Bud Lite that there is a sports bar just across the street which might better cater to their interests.

Anyway, this was a few days after the close of the Great American Beer Festival, and the Rock had received many of the leftover partial barrels. After what felt like being interviewed by the bartender to determine my worthiness, he poured for me a small glass of a brew that had been produced by Oskar Blues for the competition. It was a Scotch Strong Ale which had been aged for 18 months in an old whiskey cask.

As I sat at the bar appreciating that glass of beer, I was at once both giddy and morose. My elation, of course, came from the fact that this was the richest, most complicated, most aromatic and wonderfully textured beer that had ever crossed my lips, and I pleasure I knew that few upon this earth would ever experiance. And my sorrow from the fact that there was but one half barrel of this elixer upon the whole earth, and that upon its completion, never again would this particular beer be enjoyed by mortal men.

Hell, I'm getting a little teary just writing this, and I've got a perfectly good half-empty glass of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale sitting right next to me. It pales by comparison...

MMMmmm 5 minute pour. I'm lucky if they take 2 minutes. (Ex's sisters BF was irish and he introduced me to the perfect pour.)

You should find a new beer. Amstel Light is 2.5% ABV.

If you are in the area, or you mystically get them. Clipper City brews are good. (Baltimore Beer). Good beers that range from the Marz-hon. Peg Leg Stout, and the Holy Sheet.

Recently for bottled beer I can get anywhere I've been enjoying Dos Equis Amber.

Personally I've been searching for a good Mead to try.

I stopped drinking Guiness in the states after I went on business to the UK and drank it there. Its just not the same here, at all.

I go 4 to 6 months at a time with out beer. (fucking general order #1) My first opportunity to legally obtain an intoxicating liquid is the Dubai airport. There is a nice little Irish pub near my departure gate that has the best fucking guinness I have ever consumed.

I will chime in although I'm not a "beer man". As pointed out, rum is my drink of choice, but when it comes to store bought beer, for light'ish, I just drink PBR. Mexican=Pacifico. Domestic=Yuengling. For imports, I'm partial to Bass and Harp when in a bar.

But when it has to be red... Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale.

And FTR, Landshark reecently made my top5 worst aftertastes ever, just ahead of a warm and flat Schlitz.

It was wrong of me to say import and then refer to flying dog. I guess I see 3 colors of beer. Domestics, foreign, weird microbrews with crazy colored labels/boxes that I try when I feel the need. I tried 3 different flying dog's and didn't care to write anything down or remember which brew it was because I didn't care for any 3 of them.

We have a good local bar for a smaller town. 18 beers on tap with good prices. They pour Guiness slow, I can't stomach it though, tears me up big time.

When I was Spain my Junior year of HS we ended up at this bar, bunch of young kids with no idea what we were doing. Got hammered in minimal money drinking out of big 1.5 L boots all night. The beer was good but i have no idea what we were drinking, probably nothing special.

Considering making my own beer this summer. I think it would be nice to do it at least once.

So jealous of Y8s right now.

I don't drink much anymore, but when I'm looking to get a little nuts I like 151 or Jack. I just had me a couple Coors lights out skating, not really a fan though. After work at the shop the guys all drink Budweiser, so that's a regular. The brazilian guys have me drinkin 4-5 Caipirinhas at times. :)

I like enjoying a Woodchuck once in awhile. I'd say favorite taste would be Woodchuck. When I drink to drink though, it really doesn't matter what it is.....:friday:

So has anyone tried any of the rediculous rare Sam Adams?? my favorite Sam is Octoberfest.

I like the sam seasonal beers. Not so much the spring, kinda tastes like someone accidentally knocked a spice rack into it. I like all beers that dont say corona, miller, or coors in a yellow can. Drinkin a Negra Modelo right now:beer: (Modelo especial also sucks)


Also, Im jealous of joe. San diego has to be one of the best places in the country, if not the world, when it comes to selection of beers on tap.

My favorite Draft is Pauliner (SP?) Hefewiezen

My get a 6 pack at 7 eleven beer is Yuengling hands down. (We have a brewery in tampa, so its usually pretty tasty, and cheaper than Coors. Usually about 10 bucks for a 12 Pack bottles here.)

Well, we're definitely behind Denver, which seems to be microbrew mecca. OTOH, both Stone and Green Flash are within 5 miles of where I work, and yet I've never been to either.

My favorite local hangout is a place called the Pizza Port. They only have ~30 taps or so, but they rotate through them an awesome selection of local microbrews. There is one section dedicated to stouts and porters, there is always a good barleywine or two...

How much does a microbrew getup cost anyway?

I like too many beers to have a favorite...but I'm looking for a decently cheap "mainstay" that I can afford to keep in the fridge full time, so this thread is great. Smooth, amber, not too malty...

All you ATL folks, I hope you've been to the Brick Store Pub in Decatur. Yummy. Describe to them what your perfect beer is, and they'll bring it to you in the appropriate glass. I once got a beer served to me in a teacup there. The Taco Mac in Virginia Highlands isn't bad either.

It depends on what type of beer you're making. Different beers have different and/or more steps.

Are kits like this worth while? Seems a easy way to get started. Found the same thing for $20 less elsewhere, just using this as an immediate example.

Technically, it's homebrew. Microbrew is generally commercial.

If you're going to buy one homebrew book, buy The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. It's a good, rounded introduction to both the mechanics of brewing and many of the various styles and such.

A lot of cities have homebrew supply places where you can go both for equipment and recipes. Otherwise, here are some links. I don't have any particular experience with these vendors, but they seem popular and will give you a good idea of prices:

The "absolute minimum" essentials are:

1- Large pot (3-6 gallons) for boiling the wort
2- Long plastic or metal spoon, for stirring
3- 6 gallon plastic bucket, for fermentation
4- Airlock, for bucket
5- Some plastic tubing, for siphoning
6- A capping device, for bottling
7- Bottling wand and racking cane
8- Sanitizing solution

Seriously, that's about it. Everything beyond this is luxury.

What kind of bottles should i try and get? I think my local health food store sells all this stuff. I should go see what they have and don't have and buy one of these online kits to get started.

you can reuse the bottles from the last beer you had. just make sure to wash them well and sanitize them.

actually start with the wikipedia entry on beer for some background on it and how the brewing process works. it's like a chemistry lesson and very informative before you commit any money to a book. it also gives you an idea of the scope involved.

Fat Tire for me. Not sold here, but Tennessee is getting it soon and that's only a 4 hour drive and a lot more fun to travel to than Illinois or Missouri.

As for the guy who said mmmm 5 minute Guinness pour, they're doing it wrong. Guinness themselves have specified that the perfect pour takes just under two minutes.

I don't really drink enough that i want to brew my own. I just want to do it, i can always pass the equipment on to a friend. If anything the guys at work would trade for it.
