How not to move 100s of lbs of Slate..
So I'm currently amidst redoing my kitchen. Counters/sink/garbage disposal are all in. Next up is the floor and the Island tiling. So I took the 91 Turbo Civic to the Lowes to pick up my supplies...
Ingredients involved:
2 50lb bags of thin set
12 boxes of 12x12 slate
9 boxes of 6x6 slate
Grout
Tools etc...
Now mind you, car has a mild drop (HR Sports), and is on 14inch wheels (drops some by nature of smaller tire/wheel.
Leaving me tucked.
And a wee bit low...
Poor Poor muffler
I couldn't fit my hand in there... its 1/4 - 1/2 an inch away from the ground....
Somehow made it home. Had the wife pull her car across the street with me and take the majority of the slate out... so I could actually get in the driveway.
Fun times!

Sam, I had the thinset bags at my seatback and some of the small tiles in the passenger foot well along with being behind the passenger seat. I had my wife along, so I couldn't load up the front passenger area.
I wouldn't say cadillac... more like lead weight on wheels.

I had an 89 Civic I used like a truck for years. It's a miracle I didn't break the chassis - once put 480 # of pea gravel in the hatch, and I thought the rear tires were going to blow all the way home.
Last year, I saw a guy at the local Agway tell them to load 25 50# bags of topsoil in the back of his new Honda odyssey. He got really pissed at me when I suggested he might want to do 2 trips. I dunno, maybe it was a 3/4-ton Odyssey.

Lowe's and Home Depot will let you rent their trucks even if you're not buying anything from them. A friend of mine had to pick up 2 very large outboard motors. They wouldn't fit in a pickup, he didn't want to make 2 trips and the local U-Haul didn't have any trucks available that day. He went to Lowe's and rented the truck for 5 hours $100.
