2018 Miatas at the gap - anyone going?

So, if all goes well I will be living in Georgia by the time this event happens. I don't have nor will I have a room in Fontana, but I do hope to come up for a couple group drives. I had no idea I was going to be in this position when rooms were available or else I would have reserved.

Is anyone going? Anyone have a spare bedroom in their cabin or a place I can crash for the night? Willing to pay. Probably thinking Saturday night into Sunday.

flier129 06-07-2018 09:26 PM

This will be my..... 17th year!

We're doing a miata track at AMP the Thursday before!

paNX2K&SE-R 06-07-2018 09:26 PM

I'll be there with some friends, I think Marcus (Flier129) is the only one of them that's a member here. We're doing the track event at AMP on Thursday then heading up to Robbinsville Friday morning.

Chiburbian 06-08-2018 12:59 AM

The more I think about it the less likely I will have the Miata there for the event. I may have to drive my Fiesta ST.

when it gets closer I’ll be in contact. Does this mean I have a place to crash, or just that your going?

PatCleary 06-08-2018 04:28 AM

Hoping to drive my NC down. Should probably figure out a place to stay.

alienmiata1 06-08-2018 07:22 AM

I will definitely be there. My car is currently in pieces, but I’m hoping to have it back together in time. I live about an hour from the dragon, so I will just drive up there on Friday and Saturday.

psyber_0ptix 06-08-2018 08:28 AM

I plan on being there

sixshooter 06-08-2018 10:29 AM

I've got a reservation and I think quite a few others do as well. I think there will be several from the Tampa contingent coming up

unk577 06-21-2018 04:26 PM

We're taking a few cars up again this year. Will probably be in Fontana area all week

Midtenn 06-27-2018 12:37 PM

I'm thinking about going. Any recommendations on places to stay? I'll likely be towing there since I'm coming from the Miatas Before the Gap track day.

BBro 06-27-2018 03:15 PM

I just canceled my reservation at Fontana, sadly wont be making it this year for MATG but will be out that way for some other events.

Fontana's lodge will have random openings between now and then. As you see above, there's cancellations :-D

Let me know if you can't find anything, I'll poke around.

sixshooter 07-17-2018 07:45 AM

Miataturbo guys please consider buying or borrowing a CB radio for this year's MATG adventure. Especially important for people like flier129 who may be leading some of the runs. Sometimes it's good to know about trouble before you get there or if somebody needs help with an emergency.

Cell phones do not work at all pretty much anywhere except for the hotel lobby's wifi.

Amazon has handheld units for around $25 and console units starting at $33 that have 4 stars or better.

Joker 07-17-2018 08:06 AM

When are you guys going?

There is no way i will make it in my car.

sixshooter 07-17-2018 08:13 AM

Wednesday night or Thursday morning departure.

paNX2K&SE-R 07-17-2018 10:08 AM

CBs are definitely better but more people have FRS radios so we typically use them instead.

flier129 07-17-2018 11:01 AM

Any radio you get requires some relaying down the line in larger groups or if the group is spread out.

I tested this back in 2007 or so, CB radio with a bigass antenna will reach ~2miles of road(I used mile markers) up the hill. It will vary depending on if someone is on the edge of a valley orrrrr on the other side of the hill lol.

I'll try to borrow a FRS radio this year when I lead the A&W run.

sixshooter 07-17-2018 11:47 AM

According to Wiki:
FRS has an actual range of about 0.3 to 1 mile and is limited by law to 0.5 watts and is in the 49MHz range. A CB radio with a little antenna like the one I pictured is good for 2-4 miles, limited by law to 4 watts and is in the 27MHz range.

A handheld unit operating in the CB range will still have up to 4 watts but will be limited by antenna length to as little as 1 mile.

None of them will pitch a signal over a mountain to the other side. A CB should get a signal further up the valley than a FRS due to wattage and should work better through the trees and smaller obstacles due to longer wavelength.

But yeah, rock blocks signals but it can also bounce them a little.

chriscar 07-17-2018 12:39 PM

MATG noob here, although I've been to the Gap a few times. I'll be there with paNX2K&SE-R.

Your experience for MATG is going to be a tad different than most with that crew ;)

chriscar 07-17-2018 02:09 PM

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. A few years back my wife and I stayed over his house on our way back to Dallas, and we caravaned with him and a few of his friends on their way to MATG. I was driving her new GTI, and some of the roads they chose were absolutely bonkers.

I won't be making it, at least not with a fun car. The job I was trying to get threw me a curveball and if I do get it, it won't be for another couple months. Good thing I don't NEED a job. SMH.

Good to see everyone else linking up though. I'll be out there next year for sure.

Padlock 07-18-2018 11:01 AM

I'll be there. Leaving with the Wisconsin crew on early Wednesday morning.

concealer404 07-18-2018 02:53 PM

I'll be there. What i'm driving or if i'm driving remains to be seen. Neither car is ready.

You probably have a better excuse.

I'll be there assuming I can get all my little tasks done and chase down why I'm loosing water.

BMW 6 speed swap and a roll cage. Both bigger jobs than I expected and both kicked my ass so far.

concealer404 07-18-2018 04:11 PM

I um.... should jump start Hater and decide if i want to do something about the year old gas and oil that's in it. Maybe get it aligned.

I'm just not motivated and work and the way-more-important daily drivers are kicking my ass.

Crap, you reminded me I need to get mine aligned. Maybe I'll just do a quick alignment with some borrowed toe plates and camber gauge.

Padlock 07-18-2018 04:58 PM

my entire interior is out, I'm redoing all of my aero, and the head isn't even on my motor.. so theres that.. see you all in 2 weeks! RIP free time

chiefmg 07-19-2018 01:43 AM

I'll be there again this year. Decided since I was close to it anyway to take extra time off work so I could make it.

KMiata 07-19-2018 02:12 PM

We will be there with at least four K swapped cars and a huge tent. Turbo K NB will be there too, we just fired it up yesterday and it's getting tuned next week.

Well that answers the question I asked you in an email, haha.

unk577 07-24-2018 08:25 AM

We'll be there with 2 LFX cars and 3 or 4 LS cars

shuiend 07-24-2018 04:37 PM

FaeFlora will be in Asheville Friday August 3rd with his band performing. Miata folk should totally pack his stages and wave around sawzalls instead of lighters during his set.

sixshooter 07-24-2018 05:21 PM

That's a hundred miles. Two hours each way on the mountain roads. Not sure I'm up for it.

You can be excused to miss it. He is heading down to Tampa on August 8th. You can rock out there with him.

I'm not sure I'd cross the street to watch Fae get hit by a bus, but ok.

sixshooter 07-25-2018 09:21 AM

I'm selling a couple of items on the local forum but I may bring them to MATG if anyone wants them.

Stein's Frame Rails - $80 - Stainless steel, strong like bull, make your Miata stiff like...something stiff.

Ok, you've got the frame rails.

Wingman is getting the flywheel.

I will be in Cabin 660 and available whenever possible on CB channel 21, since cell phones do not work anywhere up there.

Sixshooter in six six oh.

I'm trying to remember who I have promised floor space to inside the cabin. I know Troy is coming up with me. But I can't remember who else I talked to.

Everybody should post where they are staying and what their cabin assignments are.

concealer404 07-26-2018 10:16 AM

I'm off site. I've got vteckiller, jcoupe, boileralum, chiefmg, and one of vteckiller's friends with me.

Gonna be four, count 'em, FOUR 2000 SEs at our cabin. Don't hate us cuz u ain't us.

Midtenn 07-26-2018 10:23 AM

I'm renting a "tiny house" between the Gap and Robbinsville with another MaTG newbie.

psyber_0ptix 07-26-2018 10:37 AM

I think @Shibby and I are bunking on couch/floor of that7guy's bungalow. Not sure where it is, I'm just following them.

We'll have CB's so hopefully we can link up. Or we'll just show up and say howdy.

James, do you need a CB, I may have an extra

Padlock 07-26-2018 11:40 AM

I'm hoping a buddy has FRS radio that I can borrow for the trip. I'll be in the poolside cabana at Fontana, so if anyone wants to get drunk poolside I will have drinks

sixshooter 07-26-2018 11:44 AM

Ben, offsite where-ish?

That reminds me, I've got a spare CB that just needs an antenna.

concealer404 07-26-2018 11:47 AM

Got a cabin about 30 minutes around the loop away from the resort. Maybe 1.5 miles as the crow flies.
