Miatas at the Gap XV - July 29-31, 2011

Come and join the largest annual gathering of Miatas in the country!

There will be vendors, free food, beer swaps, drives to area attractions (both natural and man-made), and of course... great roads, great people and great cars!

You'll see Miatas in every state of transformation, from bone stock to barely resembling the original vehicle. If you ever wanted to know if something could be done to a Miata, you'll probably see it here!

Vendors will be set up at Fontana with their wares for sale, show and shine will be just about everywhere there is to park and a few places in between.

There will be drives to different locations, including Wayah Road, the Cherohala Skyway, Waterfall Tours, Fat Buddies BBQ in Franklin, and of course, The Tail of the Dragon!

So come and sit a spell and relax with your new best friends.

If you plan on staying the night, I might suggest calling NOW! Lodgings fill up quickly and if they're already full, ask about a waiting list.

See you at the Gap!

Will everyone look at my car and tell me what a shame it was that I modified it? Or is this a more open minded crowd?

It is a good mix of both...probably more slightly modded ones than not.

I enjoy getting out and meeting folks, and then tearing the shit out of some of the lesser known back roads with true canyon carvers.

People always assume b/c a lot of M.netters show up that it isn't a fun event, it is an awesome event.

If you don't mind getting a driving award and maybe trying to find a ride back home or maybe calling mommy for bail money, sure go ahead.

My mom will beat up your mom.

Hmm in all seriousness I might actually attend, assuming we can do a butt-hugging train wiht a few other miatas down from md/dc/nova.

I don't need a hotel, I will sleep on the ground. In all seriousness though, I have spent many hours sleeping in my miata. I used to drive to work at 4am, clock in, and then go to the parking garage and sleep until 9am. Of course, I worked for the federal government.

The Gap is awesome. I am a native of that area. There used to not be many cops there, so I would take my miata and go keep up with sports bikes. Plus there are sites that will take photos of your car hauling nuts around a corner, and a guy on a bike that will follow you and take a video. I have never not had fun there.

golftdibrad 03-01-2011 05:39 PM

if you've never been go. A bunch of old dubber friends and I go every year and have a blast. That place is part of what inspired me (and the other buds) to get into a proper sports cars.

flier129 03-01-2011 07:28 PM

MATG is a great event! I've been going since I was 12 or so (22 now).

You won't get any type of good runs during the day, but pre 8am and after 8-9pm the traffic is gone and so are the antagonizers (cops).

Hellbender can be fun, a little bumpy in some spots and coming toward the dragon it can get you trouble since your pace gets cut in half just about. Unless of course, your putting along the drawn out sections.

Cherohala skyway is fun and has a pretty view. Can get yourself in trouble with higher HP cars.

Some of the side backroads are alright, happy valley, couple roads in robbinsville and a few random roads in townsend. They have a lot of driveways connecting to them and the conditions of the road can vary A LOT.

I've been trying to get a little mt.net meet going on up there for a couple of years now. There's of course m.netters there but there's also a lot of ppl that have hardly anything to do with forums that show up with some nice cars. I always wondered what happened to that Canadian crew that use to come every year.

I'd be happy to meet anyone at 7am to do a few fun runs with my stock 94, I'll lead :giggle:

paNX2K&SE-R 03-02-2011 11:48 AM

We went to MATG for the first time last year and had a blast. My car didn't get much attention among all the m.net washed and waxed pretty ones until people saw it run and checked out what I have under the hood. After that it received a warm welcome. We're going down for an entire week this year. I agree about running the dragon after dark. Some of our best runs were done between 10pm and 1am.

What color is your shitbox? I saw a few different turbo cars with mt.net stickers just sitting but never saw the owners, it was disappointing.

chicksdigmiatas 03-03-2011 01:07 AM

I could only imagine a turbo car up there. I was staying with z06's and bikes in NA trim. By the way flier, have you ran into old mike burke that runs sts? He is from asheville, he used to come up to bristol and run, and I ran a couple events with his club in Asheville.

Here is a pic of my pos. There was a dude from Ohio I think that had a blue 91-93 with white stripes thats also here on the board. We were both having some cooling issues there.

flier129 03-03-2011 09:23 AM

My stock radiator cracked the first time I went up there while my 97 was turbo'd. It can be hard on your car up there, thats for sure.

I haven't seen Mike run in awhile. Think I saw him last at a Bristol event.

I'd be happy with 160rwhp and some sticky tires up there honestly, lol.

baron340 03-03-2011 09:28 AM

I'll be there if I haven't been shipped off to NM by then. Of course, being local helps a lot.

I think you would just about need a track prepped turbo car to run up there, if you actually run decently hard. Like i said before, I had a blast with 130whp and azenis (when those were THE tires) and suspension. I was staying with shit i would have never stayed with on the track.

Miataphiles? We still come every year.........where you gonna be at? We'll be there the Sunday before the MATG weekend looking for the rubber off my last year's tyres.

That's pretty close to my setup (BRP stg1, RE 01's). Know I couldn't handle much more.:skid:

Now. How about doing something with my registration problem on the RAGS forum. Sent you an email.:vash:

flier129 03-03-2011 09:00 PM

Not sure where I'll be at this year, probly in a room at the crossroads motel. I'll try to track you guys down, might come up that Sunday if your up there that early.

Let me rephrase, I would be happy with 160rwhp, xidas,a front sway no rear sway, 15x9s with r888s/nt01s, xp8s, 3.9 LSD with a 5spd. So like Mr. Burke said, a race prepped miata lol.

Dave, I dont check webmaster emails much, sorry. Forward the email to flier129 AT hotmail DOT com and ill try to get you sorted out. I thought you already had an account on the forum?

BTW, r888s on my stock 94 are a complete blast up there. Way too addicting lol

Leaving Toronto on Friday morning taking some scenic (read: sideways ;) ) roads down to arrive Sunday late afternoon. Staying at Fontana Resort in of the big Magnolia cabins. There should be, at various times, my silver '00, red '93, sunburst '92, red MSM '04, Lava MSM, BRG '95, Cheezwhizz '10, Mahogany '00 - maybe others

"having some cooling issues" and being a member of this board is unacceptable.

Do you know David from the GTA, he has a nice red MSM.

Thats why I placed an order for one of the big-ass Trackspeed radiators.

Yup different David. Is he on MT or Mnet?

paNX2K&SE-R 03-07-2011 01:02 PM

I don't think he posts on either although he may lurk.

Doppelgänger 03-07-2011 01:31 PM

Jenn and I might actually come up this year since it's now at Fontana and not that cramped as shit Tapoco hellhole.

pusha 03-13-2011 01:03 PM

the leatherfaced gimp and I are considering a visit.

miatamania 03-13-2011 07:40 PM

Hell, I stay at the microtell in Robinsville. Cheap and less than 20 minutes away with a good run in.

flier129 03-13-2011 07:53 PM

Fontana makes the event a lot easier to attend really. A LOT bigger and more open.

Some of the old schoolers still like it better at Tapoco.

A larger presence from this forum would make the event even cooler :D

olderguy 03-13-2011 07:54 PM

Some of us older people are going, sans turbos

BarbyCar 03-17-2011 10:32 PM

OK.

If there's a bunch of MT going do we want to hook up for a brew or two?

miatamania 03-18-2011 09:19 AM

Uh. Duh? :D

paNX2K&SE-R 03-18-2011 12:09 PM

I'm always down for some beers.

pusha 03-18-2011 07:42 PM

Would anyone like to help me organize a drift competition? I think there will be plenty of opportunities to slide along the dragon.

flier129 03-18-2011 08:35 PM

You would want to try to drift, -----bucket.

rmcelwee 03-18-2011 11:42 PM

We've been going to the event weekend since 1999. We are opting out this year and going up a two months earlier when it is not as damn hot and crowded (11 years was enough). I can't guarantee we will have any rooms left for the gap weekend but we reserved about 25 or so last year. If you want one just let me know and I will put you on the list. If anyone cancels from our group I'll drop you a line.

The heat isn't too bad in the shade!

Drift competition will be held on the Dragon Sunday morning between 2AM and 3 AM. Do it any other time and you're bound to have people chase you down and have a "talk" with you and I'm not talking about the police. :loser:

You hate because you can't compete.

To the best of my knowledge the fastest Miata time through the Dragon is still held by a stock 1.8NA. I can't find the reference source at the moment.
