Either I'll find a buddy w/ garage/warehouse, or it'll stay here in FL thru the winter...

I drive mine all year round. It was interesting the last two winters without boost. This winter should be even more interesting.

What's the chances of me being able to get this car on the road up there as-is
?
You have my address. Leave it tagged and registered here with my address and you wont have any issues. Plus you wont have to put a plate on the front of the car.

I hope he also turned in the plates before he took off the insurance. Registered + no insurance = big ut oh when you go to reinsure it.

I'm no expert on insurance, but I am pretty sure you must have continuous coverage on all vehicles registered in your name. I got burned real bad a few years back when I first got my 323GTX. The car carrier company wouldn't ship a car w/o plates, so I went to the DMV and got 'em. I added the car to the policy 4 days later, while the car was still on the carrier from California. The insurance company wanted me to prove I had insurance on the car for those 4 days, which I didn't do cause...we'll I didn't even have the car yet. No good, and I was told having a lapse of coverage even for a day is the second worse thing you can do next to driving drunk with no license or insurance and crashing into a school bus. My rate went CRAZY (had Prudential at the time, now called Highpoint) and would have stayed high for a while (years). I bounced around a few different insurers afterwards (highpoint, then NJ Re, then NJ Cure, then Geico) and by the time I got to Geico less than a year later it didn't show up on my declarations page anymore.

If your case is similar and if the laws haven't changed, I would consider selling your car to someone, then buy it back ("gift" it to your parents or whatever). Get insurance before reregistering it. That might work. You could forge a bill of sale to before you took off insurance if the insurance company gets picky.

Or you can ignore all of this and hope your insurance company doesn't ask to see previous continuous coverage like Prudential did to me. Of all the other insurance companies I've had since, I can't recall any other asking to see that.

^eh that really sucks, but I've taken cars on/off insurance plenty of times with no issue.

I do have other vehicles that stay insured, but for example whenever my Miata is on downtime, I call Geico and tell them to take it off. 2weeks, 2months w/e later, I simply call them again and tell them I want it on the policy again because I'm using it again.
And I'm honest about the whole thing, just tell them it's my 3rd car and only comes out to play once in a while.

What DOES suck, is that my other 2 cars have FULL coverage (leased/financed), and they told me I had to carry the same coverages on the Miata. Reason being that if I hit someone in the Miata, a good lawyer could go after them for more money because they are insuring my whole fleet...and chances are they'd win. So I have to pay full coverage on ALL cars, because basically it's better that I throw money down the drain for worthless coverage rather than them battling it out for what' right. (this is all per Gecio rep)

I think it's complete BS, and upon my move to NY will shop around for insurance to see whats up. As a last resort I may just insure the Miata with a seperate company than my DD's if thats possible.

That sounds like total bullshit, what shitty insurance company are you with?

From what I know, in 2008, if its a major insurance company, good luck suing for more then what the persons coverage is contracted to pay out.

The lawyers can come after you, but once the insurance company pays out the max's thats it.

I felt the same way, so I called back and was given the same explan. from a diff rep.

My renewal is coming due soon, so I'll take it up with them (management) again or switch.

You need to switch. I have full coverage on my Expidition and minimum coverage on my F-150 and Miata with Progressive.
