Occupy Road Atlanta Dec 2-4

So there are several of us heading to Road Atlanta this coming weekend. So far I believe it will be Sixshooter, Genesplicer, Gryff, Track, and I. Is anyone else on mt planning on heading out?

Weather looks nice, high 50's during the day, and low 40's at night. A bit cool, but more then livable.

I think Sixshoot is planning on camping out with some friends Saturday night. I think I will be doing that to as I am cheap.

I am planning as of now to drive out Saturday morning. So I should be there between 11-12.

Seefo 11-28-2011 01:03 PM

dude, I spent my camera money on 01+ bumper and a steering wheel + hub. Can you grab your cousin's camera please?

nickt93 11-28-2011 01:06 PM

I might come up to hang out - I'll let you guys know for sure later in the week.

As of now I should be getting my cousins camera to bring out, so hopefully I can get good pictures.

I will also be brining a small air compressor and hopefully a tarp thing. Any other random tools you guys think you will need?

You should.

Doppelgänger 11-28-2011 01:25 PM

Hmmm, I might find some time to come chill with you guys as well. You guys want to get together for beer Sat night?

GeneSplicer 11-28-2011 02:13 PM

Yes! - I wimped out and got a room. Since theyv are having the banquet after the running on sat, that means no free beer and bbq - so we HAVE to go out after :) I'll be pulling in friday afternoon before the atl traffic gets bad - if there's any truth to that as it ALWAYS seems bad to me!

PM Track, I talked to him last week about possibly splitting a room. He might want to go in with you on one. That way it can save you both money.

It indeed is always bad, it starts about 3-3:30pm on Friday afternoons for downton connector traffic. So leave your place around 11am lol

Where are you staying? Buford? Oakwood? Braselton?

GeneSplicer 11-28-2011 06:28 PM

Braselton Holiday Inn Express, right next to Publix - it's where I usually "camp" out :)

Joe - no problem, just changed reservations to 2 doubles - driving miatas is one thing, sharing a king bed is another :greddy:

Thread title - yes the track rats are decending upon Atlanta!

redrider706 11-28-2011 07:04 PM

I am supposed to be back in the country on Thursday. If I make it back in time I will come out there and spectate.

I will be arriving at a modest...11:30PM on friday. If you can have a pre-paid prostitute with a phat ass waiting, I would greatly appreciate it. ;)

I will bring the coke!

haha, See ya friday!

Gryff 11-28-2011 07:30 PM

I havent decided if I am camping or not, if I dont camp I have family near downtown atl that Ill be staying with, but if were all going out and getting drinks, I may just end up camping.

FWIW, Ill be bringing most of my tools, I have 4 old jackstands, still work just old, and a nice tool set with most anything we will ever need for a miata.

my plan is to head to atl friday, track, I assume you are taking 85 the whole way? Wanna meet up and caravan there? I'm literally 3 minutes off of 85.
Edit: thats a bit later than I was planning, but there isnt anything wrong with that. LMK

Do you guys have a place in mind for setting up? I usually set up in the row down from the fuel pump... it'd be great to know exactly how much space we need and when I get there I can try and rope off a certain area. Maybe the lower paddock below Tech would be better?

Im down for wherever you think is best.

Being in the Oakwood/Gainesville area makes getting you some nice illegal immigrant ass easy.

haha, yea I have stayed at the oakwood comfort inn twice now. Its nice and cheap, but my last room sucked. the door didn't close all the way and the tea tasted like shit. and the coffee maker was full and spilled hot water everywhere.

First room was great.

Update for the weekend, my new VC gasket isn't coming in till friday...GAYYYYY. I should have stopped being cheap and ordered it from rosenthal. anyways, I will have to eat lunch in a car and drive back home to snag it up and put it on saturday morning.

I is excited! Now to complain to LLR about my alignment...

Sawyer 11-28-2011 11:48 PM

I'll be there. I'd definitely be down for drinks after as well.

You'd be better off buying one at Southerlin Mazda in Buford instead of burning that much gas to go home and back. When you get home, put that one up for sale...someone will snag it from you. If you want one, I can get a price from my guy (Mazda dealer) that gives me stupid good pricing and bring ut up to you Friday evening.

Gryff 11-29-2011 03:26 AM

You take your car to LRR? How do you like em? I know someone who worked for them as an intern.

Its no big deal, I live 15 minutes away from work. I appreciate the offer though, very courteous of you!

I liked them. Until I suspect they forgot to torque 6 out of the 8 eccentrics down. So now I am freaking out that my alignment maybe out of spec. and tbh it seems like nothing was changed except the two rear eccentrics which were torqued down.

I gotta call Eric today.

sixshooter 11-30-2011 10:58 AM

My friend Jarod will be bringing his RV out and his car on a trailer. He is talking about setting it up on top of the hill in the infield above the race paddock. I don't think he is 100% dead set on it but it would keep you away from the crowds and we could maybe have a campfire. The area below tech or even the cul-du-sac below that would be fine as well. I'm not picky. If you are up top in the infield you just drive around to the scoring tower and paddock when you are in class or getting ready to run. I imagine you might even walk less doing it that way than if you camped closer and didn't drive to everything, lol. But whatever, I'm easygoing.

Jarod is planning on grilling so if you bring burgers and dogs you can grill with us for lunch both days. And maybe Saturday for dinner we could grill before venturing out for drinks to save money. Or booze it there if you want to be even cheaper. Be sure to bring coolers and drinks if you want to get boozed around the campfire Saturday night. Bourbon is our friend when it gets cool out. I <3 campfires.

Just pm me your phone numbers so we can find you and your location early Saturday morning when we arrive. If you are saving spaces, Jarod will have the RV and a tandem axle trailer, I will have my white Tundra and a tow dolly, and Gary will be driving his car up, just so you will know what kind of room we will be needing just for us to fit.

This will be fun.

Seefo 11-30-2011 11:11 AM

I am in support of either option. I want to go pay "spectator hill" a visit as a makeshift skidpad on saturday.

Infield is fine with me, the extra drive will give the car a bit more cooldown.
you got my phone in your mailbox

Gryff 11-30-2011 11:22 AM

Ill send you mine aswell! Im down for whatever. I just need to figure out if I am staying at the track in a tent, or staying with my uncle... decisions decisions... lol My main issue is if I stay with my uncle im not drinking.

shuiend 11-30-2011 12:54 PM

We should make it a 40 ounces to Freedom weekend. All we drink is 40's.

I am down for camping wherever. I figure by the time I get there Saturday you gals should have it all figured out.

Doppelgänger 11-30-2011 01:47 PM

Sounds like you've found your answer right there. That's what I would call a deal breaker.

And drinking usually makes sleeping in tents not such a big deal, lol. Don't miss out on social hour(s)!

Cool! Are you or your boyfriend running HPDE this weekend or are you coming up just to point and laugh each time I drive by, lol?

Seefo 11-30-2011 02:57 PM

who is running what groups btw?

I need to know who I can spin out infront of and be able to get video of it.

Just coming to point and laugh. I need new tires or else I'd join in too.

I'm in 1 in a '96 Montego Blue Miata with a blue hardtop. Gary is in 1 in a black Sentra SE-R (because he has just recently blown up his turbo 350z and his Skyline GT-R's engines:giggle:). Jarod is in 2 in a silver 6.0 Pontiac G8 GT.

Joe (Track), you are in 2, iirc, right?

Seefo 11-30-2011 06:21 PM

yea, I am in DE2. That sucks about his blown engines. he blew them both? I saw a blue R34 at MVPTrackTime. That wasn't him, was it?

is that G8 Silver? Does he go out to other events? possibly CMP or the earlier RA event with NASA?

Doppelgänger 11-30-2011 10:07 PM

What I would give to be behind Gary on track with the GT-R  Going through the mountains was like watching live Initial D

Gryff 11-30-2011 11:25 PM

I'll be in 1. yeah, im still not sure, I do like the idea of sleeping in heat :P

But. well see.

GeneSplicer 12-01-2011 07:57 AM

I'll be in 4 - and I haven't even begun to get ready... anyone getting in tomorrow afternoon/early eve for food and drinks?

Doppelgänger 12-01-2011 08:12 AM

I'd be up. I can't think of many places in Oakwood/Braselton...

What kinda stuff do you guys like?

sixshooter 12-01-2011 10:02 AM

Gary has a purple R32. Jarod was at RA in June in HPDE1 with the G8. Yes, it is silver. And that was his first and only other time out on a road course. I talked him into trying it back then and then he talked me into getting my car prepped to come out too. I didn't want to spend the money initially. He has owned and successfully campaigned several circle track asphalt cars in the past.

Yes, Gary blew them both. The GT-R was at ~150mph and still accelerating on a deserted stretch of private roadway that strongly resembled an interstate highway. The car stopped accelerating and then stopped running. We had just refueled and he didn't swap maps from the race gas tune to the street gas tune. There is molten aluminum in the exhaust manifold. His last recorded dyno pull was 733whp on pump gas but that was before he modernized his ecu and injectors and had it retuned. He was planning to get dyno time the week following the catastrophe to get some fresh numbers but now it makes zero.

The turbo 350z was his cruiser/date car and only made 420whp but started smoking from a bad turbo seal. The oil contaminated the mass air sensor and caused the computer to make it run lean. We think number 5 piston has cracked rings because it smokes and has lower compression than the others. Definitely not track ready.

He is really hoping to get it on the track one day.

I've never seen the movie. Can somebody burn me a copy?

BTW, why aren't you doing track days?

I thought you were signed up for 3?

Can you legally have a passenger in 4? If so, think of me fondly.

Seefo 12-01-2011 10:20 AM

yea, I saw that silver G8 at RA. He was quick!

Instructors can take people in DE4.

Ouch @ The GT-R. I'm sure the teardown will provide for some interesting pics.

I simply have not had the money this year. Tires are pretty much done and no budget for new ones. I was hoping to do something as one last finale for the Kumhos, but I have not had the time. I really don't have the $400-500 for a weekend.

As for Initial D...c'mon man...YouTube it...

Gryff 12-01-2011 10:49 AM

An afterthought, but does anyone know a flat area (I know its RA its hilly) that If I had my car on it for awhile it wouldnt be in the way of people? I have got to figure out alignment settings for my car, and I plan to change the alignment some this weekend, just need a place to do it.

Also, Is anyone planning on bringing chalk, or tire markers? JW before I go buy some

Seefo 12-01-2011 10:53 AM

wow, Collin I know a flat area. the skid pad in particular is pretty flat in many places.

I need to fix my toe really badly, could you help me with that? I have been looking into DIY alignment, but its not so easy to learn and do in 1 day without prep.

m2cupcar 12-01-2011 11:00 AM

I wouldn't align the car anywhere but in the tech shed. It's usually clear except for impound tear downs, but we always align race cars there during the race weekend. If during races, just get in there after a group is dismissed for max time.

What type of grill is it and how big? Since I am not driving I will have spare time to grill some. I will probably bring out some pulled pork, hamburgers, and some chicken. If other people bring sides we will be set.

If we have power and someone has a projector we could set it up and watch initial D on the side of the RV. I got all of it on an external HD. Or other great movies such as all of the FnF movies.

I know nothing about his grill other than he is bringing it. :)

Gary is bringing baked beans and chips or something and I am bringing a case of water and a case of beer and a cooler with ice.

His RV has a generator. I don't have a projector but I know how to build a campfire.

I was kinda thinking that way too.

My MFz.com decals did not arrive from Rick today so I will be sporting exactly none of them. That's a damn slow mule train coming from Canadiaville.

I do haz a MT.net decal on my rollbar but I should have put it higher up. I was worried about messing it up by adding a camera bracket so I mounted it a little low on the diagonal. But alas, I haz no video camera still (are you listening, Santa?).

Seefo 12-01-2011 04:36 PM

DIY isnt hard. Front or rear toe? rear is a bitch.

Awesome!

As far as food, im not going to bring a cooler, I was thinking buy stuff locally If I need to. But I can try to cram non perishible goods if anyone can think of anything?

Lars, what kinda sides are you thinking?
Some hard cider does sound good as well ;) just a thought, opinions?

Joe, MT decals or MFz decals? Id rock a MT, I like the way they look more.

Seefo 12-01-2011 06:12 PM

You must rock both or you will be banhammered.

Front toe. easy easy! They only use one side of the tech shed for tech stuff. the rest is pretty much open and i think they won't complain if we use it early early.

I haven't run with NASA at Rd. ATL for 5 years- but I believe Jim Pantas is still in charge and it was a silky smooth event. Nobody gives grief for no apparent reason. I did a nut&bolt on the car I was racing that weekend, in the shed, between sessions and had a group come through. There were no issues. They only use the scales and then roll the cars out of the shed to a staging area outside- so the big area under the roof stays open. I would think the only time that area might be congested is after a spec E30 or miata race for impound...

FWIW aligning the rear isn't too hard- though I might think that because I've done it so many times. But I use four jackstands and some thread to build a square box (two strings at the sides of the car parallel to the center line- compensate for track offset). With some sliders made with masonite sandwiching grease, you can jack the car up, make adjustments, sit it down on the sliders, center up and measure. That's a half hour job with a crew worst case.
