I met up with you outside the VW/SM guy's garage in Irving and you let me drive your car to vatozone, lol. I have the green miata, but I think I had a rental car that day.

ray_sir_6 12-31-2008 06:05 PM

Ah, I remember now. Yes, the car is much different now. Another 40-50whp, and a much better tune. I need to do some minor stuff and then I'll raise the boost again. I'm still shooting for 280-290whp, only 70 more to go.

hustler 02-23-2009 04:10 PM

everyone sign up for this shit now because its starting to fill up. I'd like to see south Texas represented, dirty style.

rlogan 03-08-2009 12:06 AM

I am thinking about signing up...probably would have tonight if it didn't require another damn user registration??? WTF, I have so many different damn accounts now that it's ridiculous. Keith Verges is handling this right...maybe I can just call him.

Miatamaniac92 04-17-2009 05:28 PM

Signed up.

Damn. I need to retire so I can start making long trips for track days. I'm hoping to hit a couple central Cal tracks this summer.

Here's where I'm driving tomorrow. Brand new track. Blind corners, banked corners, off camber corners. Manly man stuff. Sorry for the thread Jack-in-the-box but I'm pretty pumped.

That is a very old picture! The 1.3 mile track comes off of wagon wheel and isn't pictured.

Guys, please sign up for this event so we can get as many miatas as possible!

I'm happy help and answer any questions in regards to the event, registration etc.

John,
I emailed Keith, but his email is bouncing (the apex one). Please PM/email me his current email.

I hear some spots are open?

To bad i've been out of racing for a few month. Apt=smaller racing budget. Plus I think my right wheel bearing might be FUBAR :(

hustler 04-21-2009 03:53 PM

it looks that way, check the site.

I just looked on APEX website and it says that 29 sports are open.

Miatamaniac92 04-22-2009 11:26 AM

No, just trying to get a confirmation. I already talked to Gary about it.

You might also try emailing Gary to confirm.

ZX-Tex 05-14-2009 02:17 PM

OK I am registered!

I am looking forward to trying out the track in the Miata instead of on a bike. It will be my first Apex event. But I requested the intermediate or advanced group since I am already a licensed racer, I know that track very well (done hundreds of laps), and thus just need to figure out how to go around fast in a car.

We'll have to figure out a spot to meet up. How is pit space at one of these events? Pretty crowded? Are you allowed to use the covered area at the scoring tower? I am coming in my car so I would rather not hassle with the ez-up. Maybe I should just get a tow bar so I can bring all my crap (ez-up, tools, lawn chair, ice chest) on the trailer. :)

Miatamaniac92 05-14-2009 03:11 PM

They are getting rooms for Thursday night:
Hotel for TDR@MSR - dfwmiata.com

I might be getting one, Hustler doesn't want hang out though :loser:

I think this event will be pretty packed, isn't he estimating ~40 plus instructors?

So is this your first trackday in the miata? Bring the party wagon, it'll probably be a long hot day.

OK yeah I usually stay at the Comfort Inn when I go up there so that is perfect. I just booked my room; the AAA rate is $63 BTW, king non-smoking.

If you ask him, he is too much of a God to hang out with us mere mortals. He can think that right up until I pass him on the track :loser:

That is a lot of instructors...

Yeah my first Miata track day. Looks like I need to get a trailer hitch fast. Either that or rent a car hitch and bring my truck. No way I want to sit in the sun all day without a cold drink. Dehydration and sunburn FTL.

Miatamaniac92 05-14-2009 04:08 PM

Ninja Edit: "40, plus instructors"

I dunno how they will dole out the covered paddocks.

Chris

ZX-Tex 05-14-2009 04:13 PM

I am assuming that I will not be able to get in one so I'll take an EZ-up.

Anyone know if the organizers will set up an IR beacon for Mychron-style lap timers? I want to bring my timer off of my bike. If not, I have a beacon and a tripod but I do not know what the standard operating procedure is for the Apex guys.

Miatamaniac92 05-18-2009 05:12 PM

This is coming up quick. I will be there Thursday night and so will Barry.

Anyone else from the board gonna make this?

Chris

ZX-Tex 05-18-2009 05:15 PM

I'll be there for sure, all signed up, got a room at the hotel, been prepping the car. I'll probably be getting there late on Thurs night so I might not be able to meet up for dinner if there are plans to do so. I'll post if that changes.

The weather forecast looks perfect. Sunny, high in the mid 80s, light breeze. Are we there yet?

spoolin2bars 05-18-2009 09:59 PM

i'm in, i just registered today. can't wait, i've been wanting to check out that track. plus, with all the miata's, it'll be nice to maybe get some idea's for my car, or find out what works, what doesn't etc....

the car was rocking, the driver wasn't. Also, I think I have your widowmaker/scissor jack handle/winder thingy.

ZX-Tex 05-23-2009 03:27 PM

Yep good to meet you guys as well! I had a good time, it was fun to go around MSR in a car for a change.

I also saw some interesting setups, including a nice idea for a Lowe's cheap-parts-based DIY under-bumper scooper. It was on a nice NB with a FM-II and a 2560 IIRC. He was smoking fast on the track, and was running coolant temps 20-30 degs F cooler than everyone else.

I learned a few things as well:
- UHP Summer Tires :ne: Race Tires - I may have been the only guy in the advanced group on street tires. Talk about bringing a knife to a gun fight. I could pull cars on the straight, but the race tire guys would close the gap on me in the corners no matter how hard I pushed, and I pushed those Fuzions (Bridgestone) for all they were worth; they were hot and shedding rubber. So I had to wave a lot of people by to keep from holding them up in the corners. Next time I'll go back with something stickier.
- Track heat loads are no joke. Even with the CAI, water injection, and 2" radiator, the coolant temps were much higher than I have ever seen them. I lowered the boost, richened the mixture, and advanced timing, which helped a bit, but damn... It's a different experience than with the race bikes. We all run stock cooling systems, with fans removed, and thrash the crap out of those engines with no overheating problems, even in 100 degree temps.
- The Garrett GT2871 is not an indestructable turbo. I am not sure what happened yet, but mine managed to destroy itself on the way back home. Long story short, it was seemingly fine when I left the track, but about 100 miles down the road it quit making boost. A parking lot inspection revealed a completely trashed compressor impeller and gobs of radial and axial shaft play. It was dead, way dead. So I changed the inlet plumbing to draw directly from ambient, unhooked the wastegate actuator (to let the gate flow freely) and drove the car the rest of the way home with no problems. I'll be removing the turbo soon (happy happy joy joy) to send it in for inspection and hopefully a warranty replacement.

I have video, but the sound is crap due to having to run with the window open (for hand signals). And, the camera did not quite capture the intensity of the experience, which is hard to do. Next time I'll have to put a remote camera in the bumper low to the ground Hollywood style.

So except for the dead turbo, it was a good time. Glad I went!

Eraser-X 05-23-2009 03:31 PM

It was a good time at a great track with only a couple of guys out there not managing there track position. I am very disappointed in how long it took me to get times down and my speeds up.

How many seconds are R compounds worth on that track 5 or 6?

3-5 seconds in my experience a few years ago. I want to get on the track with you barry. After the beating I experienced I plan on checking into Bill Holodite's school in the near future. I need help, lol.

Eraser-X 05-23-2009 04:19 PM

You were 5 seconds faster then I was on that track the best lap I logged was a 1:35.781 and I timed you at a 1:30.88 on a clean lap. I never really did get Little bend and kept entering horseshoe without boost. I will have to watch for another event at MSR this summer I want more time on that track!

I learned on a lot on the last session of the day with the turbo car in front of me who claims 1:27's on average. I was keeping up from the power differential, but he was mopping the track up with me.

I'll be down your way again in the near future. You'd love the 1.3...its a technical beating in comparison to the 1.7.

hey john! this is john. as a matter of fact, everyone i met was named john! lol. but really, did i borrow your scissor jack?

and hustler, what's your car look like? i didn't know you were gonna make it out.

that track was really fun. i thought it was going to be similar to HHR, but it's 100x better. nice flow to it. i just got my torsen installed before the event so i had to mess with my suspension setup, but by the end of the second session i had the settings figured out and my car felt awesome! so easy to control at the limit and feels alot more balanced than with welded diff. anybody get any pics? i left my camera at home. sucky thing is my gopro cam died at the end of the warmup lap on my last session. i did get my 2nd session, although, i was only running 1:30 or so (according to video) but my last session i'm sure was atleast a few seconds faster.

1:27 with a turbo SM? That can't be right. I've ran 1.26.xx with no passenger with my 120whp.

johnwag 05-25-2009 12:32 AM

I'm disappointed that I didn't get to meet more of you S. TX guys. I was under the paddock with Track Dog crew.

I met spoolin2bars and miatamaniac92.

ZX-TEX spun in front of me in horseshoe in the last session of the day and my mirror barely cleared his bumper.

S.tx guys post pics of your car so I know who you are.

i'm gonna post a pic of mine

naarleven 05-25-2009 12:33 PM

ZX-Tex, you have a oil cooler?

Maybe your turbo overheated?

HA! Sory about that. Glad nothing happened there. I knew the cars behind me were close when I spun. I was going to wave you guys by in the straight before Big Bend.

Basically I found the limits of adhesion of my street tires; I had decided to really push the tires in the slower sections in that last session to see what they could do.

I have the stock water/oil cooler, and it is a water cooled turbo. Plus I had the WI running with a 4 GPH nozzle. I suppose it is possible, but I am not thinking that is what caused it.

Miatamaniac92 05-25-2009 03:28 PM

Nice to meet you John and John. I think I missed you spoolin2bars. What were you driving?

It was a pretty good trackday. 6 sessions, nice weather (80's and overcast) and pretty efficiently run.

I had a few 1:34's when there was no traffic or I wasn't doing a cool down lap.

I was seeing 270-290*f oil temps with an oil cooler and crappy ducting. With no real oil cooler...that's pretty lol.

ZX-Tex 05-26-2009 06:06 PM

Yeah either way I'll have improved radiator ducting and an oil cooler going in soon.
