Are there ever casual meetups in NorCal?
As I build my car, it would be great to see some of the stuff other people have done in person.
In particular, I'm having a hard time choosing a roll bar that won't crush my skull in a rear ender, and will pass the broom test (I'm 6'2"). Sitting in other people's cars would help!

If you were unaware, check out NorCalRoadsters. They (used to) do meetups pretty frequently. While its not nearly as technical or active as MiataTurbo, there are a lot of SF Bay Area/San Jose locals who participate. I'm a member over there as well but don't post often anymore. Check it out.
