Default laguna seca 9/14 video with track overlay

I took a video of one of my Laguna Seca laps and crammed the data from my performance box into a video overlay generator someone put on google code (trackvideo - Project Hosting on Google Code). There's an annoying bug where the map is mirrored making the turns go in the wrong direction, but you get the idea. While my code is pretty crappy right now, it should have the ability to plot start and split points, display lap number and the fastest lap, and also display height data.

Sorry about the sound - I need to feed the mic out near my exhaust and get some foam to put around it.

I know my lines and braking could use lots of improvement. This was my first LS day with the turbo (6 psi) and going from 1:55->1:50 turned the intermediate group into a parking lot. This was my only clean lap that session. :(

YouTube - laguna seca 9/14 session 4 lap 3 with track overlay (fixed)

Nice!

But your track overlay has the negative z axis as it's normal vector.

Ya, it's flipped. :( I have a crappy computer and it takes about 2 hours from starting the overlay generation to when it's finally all up on youtube and I noticed the problem 5 minutes before the original post. It's being fixed right now.

I fixed a bunch of things. It's time to upgrade this computer.

very nice!!

Pardon my ignorance, what is exactly is the performance box?? does it work by pipointing you movement by gps and then ploting then on a given track??

PerformanceBox and DriftBox from VBOX USA

It's a gps + accelerometer + timer. 10 times a second it samples those things and writes out the data to a sd card. The box gives you an interface for lap times, but the cool stuff happens when you read those log files from the sd card and use them for things like an overlay. I used/hacked a program that takes the data and creates an overlap in avi format. Then you need to sync up the two video files and write out the combined one.

The track picture in my video is just a drawing of my gps coordinates and not from a map of laguna seca.

edit: Looks like the performance box actually calculates acceleration from gps latitude/longitude and does not have an accelerometer.

Very cool gadget. It seems very handy when it comes to lowering lap times

Watched again...very fun to watch now.

I wish we could have track overlays like that in the upper right hand corner of visor. I've tried using small, furry animal shapes to memorize track layouts and it's not working.

Good lines. Line through 2 could use some work, but everything else looks pretty good. Just have to carry more speed now. At some point I'll put a video up from my race at Laguna this morning and you can watch it and see if you learn anything.

Very cool overlay Mike. I think a how-to writeup is in order.
