Post up any pics, vids, tips, tricks, etc!

Went to work the start for a friend today. Got tired of watching everyone have fun and caved in. I think I messed up my gangster dish wheels. This was in a bone stock 93LE :) with 15x8's and 205 Direzza's. Was about 2.5 seconds out from RWD TTOD. With suspension and tires I think I could close that gap for good. These cars have way more potential off road than I thought.

You know the day will be awesome when you start with a beard bennie.

A part of me wants to keep the NB around and let it be a rallyx build next winter or so. I'm about done with putting money in the NA.

I've taken the NB on some up north back roads and i was stunned at how well it handled loose terrain even with an all season tire.

I've attached a pic of 4 RallyCross Miatas at Kalaeloa Raceway Park in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sadly, we lost this site, but are working to get another location.

Schadenfreude 11-13-2014 03:23 PM

so rally-x is usually just a quick lap or two right? but harsher surfaces.
what is more stressful to the Miata? a rally-x day or a track day.

afaik there are a ton of scoob owners out there who do weekend rally-x in their daily drivers... would Miatas be able to do the same thing?

jacob300zx 11-14-2014 12:41 PM

Yes and I plan to show it. I have order some replacement Sensen shocks, springs, sways, and winter tires. Should be updating my build thread soon.

Thev's what size and brand tires are you on? How did you do you mud flaps, pics? What class you running? Awesome pics thanks!

I ordered Cooper Weather Master ST2 in 195/60r14, going to run them on daisy's too.

TheV's 11-14-2014 09:22 PM

Ha ! ;o) Great question ! Lots of different ones....There is no perfect tire for all the different tracks even just here in MI. We run some tracks that are sandy, some are hard packed clay and some are very muddy/grassy. I have some Firestone winterforce snows for some surfaces, the tires in these shots are some really old Bridgestone mud tires, I occasionally use some used rally tires but these tend to be a bit heavy for Rally X. Recommend you go to a local event and walk around the "paddock" and see what everyone is running, it's pretty interesting....If you are non turbo smaller diameter and light tires seem to work well to get you max torque and control. Wish I knew the secret, but for me having a selection at each course works well and then you need to make a smart choice after walking the course and looking at the weather forecast. The race i have in the pictures I gambled and it did not pay off - the temps were right around freezing and I gambled the sun would come out and the track would get muddy....it didn't and I just slid around all day..should have gone with a snow/ice tire...part of the fun !

TheV's 11-14-2014 09:27 PM

Oh and I'm running modified - really only because there were no other competitors in the other RWD classes that season. Mudflaps are a generic set from Oh really's, they have a Ford oval on them so I turned them around ! No personal experience with the Coopers but they look like they have a decent open tread pattern with plenty of edges for bite. Good Luck !

Frank_and_Beans 11-14-2014 10:05 PM

The mud flaps on my car I made from polyurethane from mcmaster-carr. I don't remember the exact specs, but something like this: McMaster-Carr

I own the white GC and the yellow Miata. The Miata has been really easy to maintain and has been more reliable than the GC.

With the 1.8L and Jackson racing supercharger, I have almost too much power everywhere on any rally-x surface. But occasionally, for fractions of a second, I have enough grip to not spin the tires. So obviously an M62 supercharger is in the works, because more power is more better...

IMHO a stock miata is woefully underpowered for rally-x. But maybe I'm crazy?

In thick thick mud, we had to rape laz's 1.6 in 1st and 2nd to keep it from bogging down. We had a collapsed lifter for a while afterwords. This was very stock with a JR header. A MS would of helped, not sure what kind of intake I'd have to design to keep dirt and water out while still flowing well enough.

See pics of my solution here:

I now have a K+N Prefilter condom on the filter now as well:

Seems to keep dust and dirt out, but we haven't had a super mudfest event like the photos you posted.

jacob300zx 11-17-2014 01:18 PM

I agree with the 1.6 needing more torque not to bog, 20wtq would help a lot.

I drive/built the #101 car posted above
My tips and tricks are

1. Good shocks/dampers- I've rebuilt and revalved Bilsteins. I still haven't found the "ideal" setup, but I can can say that my chassis is never upset and the wheels stay firmly planted to the ground. My car is incredibly stable and controllable on any surface. There's a little too much low speed compression still. Shock dynos will be posted later.

2. Chassis bracing/stiffening- My car has a miatacage spec miata cage in it. It has made a considerable difference. Some good frame rails, roll bar, and other braces will do if there isn't a full roll cage. The weight these items add will be more than offset in time gained by their benefit.

3. Tires- We all knew this already though. Right?

4. LSD- It's a must! I'm using a Kaaz. Before the car had a 1.6 viscus lsd that seemed to work better than most people imply. I never felt like I was losing an time because of it. The clutch lsd is definitely better suited for rally though.

Brake control has proved to be helpful as well. Stoptech pads have worked very well for me for rallycross.
Power isn't everything, but a BP4W run by a MS3X has provided me with ample torque.
There's probably more that I'm forgetting.

In the midwest they salt our roads to rid them of the snow/ice. I was thinking if I wanted to do ice racing or winter rally-x, I would pull the suspension bits & weather-proof coat them + undercarriage as well as apply sealant to the paint. What do you guys think?

x2 on this. I have a couple friends who dd their "summer" cars. And they use some sort of weather proofer sealant.

Sounds like a great recipe to create a rusty miata...

My rallycross car was a Michigan car all of it's life, with previous owners driving though the winter. It is SUPER RUSTY! I had to replace the drivers floor pan, both frame rails, both front fenders, trunk and a door due to rust.

My turbo car was a California car all of it's life - what a difference!!

My son and I have been using this stock 1999 Miata for Rallycross for the past year. We compete mostly in the Middle Georgia and Atlanta SCCA Regions, but have been to Alabama and Tennessee also.

My son Matt won our class at the 2014 Dynatorch SCCA SE National Challenge in this car.

Detailed information can be found at Rallycross Miata Project - Mostly MIATA

I enjoy Rallycross more than Autocross!

A friend of mine just started Rally Crossing in the SC area, were you at the last ATL one? He and his girlfriend drove a black beater civic.

Yes, I attended the last Atlanta Region Rallycross in December 2014. I was able to beat Matt by less than a second.

This is Matt at an Atlanta Region event after eating a cone.

We plan to attend the all the Atlanta and Middle Georgia Region's Rallycross events in 2015. I also hope to get to go to other SE regions on occasion.

Here's some pics about a year ago of my 95 gettin' some sideways action. Serious the BEST car I've ever rallycrossed. With a good set of Blizzacks it rips.

So all you really need for this stuff in some winter/ice tires? Combining some of those with that new FM 3" lift kit would allow me to get to work during the winter freak storms!

All you need to do is enter into an event and drive. If you've never done it before, gaining experience is the most crucial thing. From there I'd recommend good shocks, a LSD, and tires. Even better than car prep is a driver school. I'm a driving instructor at the FIRM. Pretty much no matter how good you think you are, a day or five at the school will completely change your mind on just how valuable learning how to drive at a driving school is. Dirtfish and O'Neil are also good choices. Just get out there and drive!
