Default Our father son miata project

Well my stepdad and I decided we wanted to do a little father son project and so after doing some research we picked up our white 1995 miata and are turning it into our own autocross/track beast!

Here it is the day we picked it up.

Eric (stepdad) and the car

Monster truck!

That will have to be addressed soon.

Dirty engine bay

I went to a subaru meet this weekend and while I was gone Eric cleaned up the engine bay and replaced the leaky valve cover gasket. He also gave the valve cover itself a little makeover while it was off.

We ordered up our first parts bunch on friday. I'll post up some pics when we get it!

Good deal man! Are you planning on turbocharging it or leaving it stock? Personally, for a dedicated autocross car, first thing I would do is suspension and tires. Turbo makes the car a lot more fun on the street though.

It'll definitely end up turbo at some point, but we're focusing on the other parts of the car for this season.

What did you use on the valvecover? Looks great and I'm researching how I'm going to do mine.

Very cool bonding time. My old man and I did the initial fluid maintenance on the Miata last summer when I brought it home. The wives were so proud.....

I believe it was just krylon crinkle red spraypaint that we got at O'Reilly Auto Parts. I'll double check but I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Nice project car. My dad and I bought a 1958 Jeep CJ-5 that had been sitting for 15 years when I was 11 and we did a frame-up restoration on it while he taught me all of the basics about cars. With a top speed of a frightening 40mph, it was no Miata though.

If you're just autocrossing it, tear that rear finish panel off and call it done. Its a bit of a mroadster look, but it'll be better than how it looks now, free, and you'll gain performance! (weight loss is everything!)

Awesome progress glad to see you guys making some progress.

How do you like those kumhos? I'm trying to decide on a new tire to put on soon.

Haven't really driven on them enough to really get a feel for them yet. The roads around here are pretty much covered in gravel from winter so I have yet to experience a lot of grip. They ride pretty quietly so far. That's always nice.

Maybe I'll post up a review when we get some autox time on them.

Buffed her up today and painted the wheels metallic black. We're pretty happy with the results. She shined up real nice! Sorry about the terrible lighting for the wheels pics.
