Will add my carbon fiber NACA duct DIY to this thread, hope you don't mind.
Bought for 10 bucks of craigslist. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6190.jpg Made scratches on the lid where bondo will go onto. Then taped the duct side where it will bondo to the lid (so I can lift it off later after the bondo). Then taped it onto the lid. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6203.jpg Taped the opening. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6200.jpg Side shot of the gap that needs to be filled with bondo. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6201.jpg Filled the gap with bondo, then took off the duct. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6206.jpg Wet sanded to a smooth surface. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6207.jpg Epoxied glue the NACA Duct to the bondo surface. Then can spray painted it with a few coats at a time. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6214.jpg Wet sanded the paint and then layed 3 layers of clear coat afterward. Then wetsanded again to smooth out bumps. Then compound waxed it to a glossy shine. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6232.jpg Peeled off the taped section. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6233.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6234.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6241.jpg Used the small net grill section that came with the bondo for the rear, (bent the piece to a soft corner "S" shape) and used epoxy to hold it to the back of the lid piece. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6244.jpg Laid down some more glossy wax and "Ready for my close-ups." http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6245.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6246.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6248.jpg |
Since this is the unofficial "post your NACA ducted headlight lid" thread, here's mine.
- 3" duct - JB weld as adhesive and filler - flat-blacked the sides of the duct It came out just okay. If I were truly baller I'd have done like Pharo_X did and repaint the lid. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...68746291_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...97619443_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...06552942_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...82278580_n.jpg Looking back through the thread, most aren't as inboard as mine. Mine's about as far back and as inboard as you can get too, I had to cut the bolt the housing pivots on for clearance.. |
How are you guys tracing the naca hole onto the lid?
|
Observe my first pic, I just cut a template from the duct and plopped it onto the lid.

Just make sure to place yours further toward center than I did, lest you have to trim your bolts for clearance.
|
That seems to be a great idea and I think I should try it in my one too.
