thesnowboarder blows 4th in his 6-speed @ Laguna this weekend :(

Turned the boost up to 16 psi which should be aprox 250whp or so, no serious mis-shifts or anything out of the ordinary either...

YT embedding is soooooo confusing. :jerkit:

Savington, but i can only assume ill have to do the same now.

WonTon 04-12-2010 12:15 AM

im sorry man!

does this mean you have met the limits of the 6 speed? or was it just wear and tear over time and abuse?

Highly highly doubt it, many others are using 6 speeds with much more power than myself. I can only guess it was wear and tear/abuse. :crx:

WonTon 04-12-2010 12:38 AM

i got my fingers crossed for ya that the trans doesn't need replacing and you can get by with just putting new guts into it. post pics of carnage if you get a chance to take them?

caideN 04-12-2010 12:54 AM

damn, looks like a blast until blowing 4th =/

pdexta 04-12-2010 12:59 AM

Wow, that sucks. Certainly doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary when it lets go. Good luck getting her back together :(

curly 04-12-2010 01:04 AM

That sucks man. Only thing I can think of is you're shifting incredibly fast and letting off the throttle incredibly quick. I know it's bad for lap times, but try (next time) letting off the throttle a little more gradually and easing into the gears a little bit more, with a slight pause in neutral. My miata would sit for months if I blew my transmission, so I've learned to shift it like a 50's pickup (which I've owned). Again, my condolences.

Bond 04-12-2010 01:04 AM

Something went wrong on that downshift, either way though, good to see my fellow ACL patient out on the track. The car looks damn fast.

Cspence 04-12-2010 04:21 PM

Ouch! Maybe one day I'll man up and start tracking my car....this is the reason I keep putting it off.

hustler 04-12-2010 04:38 PM

you're making between 280-310whp at 16psi on a Mustang or Dynodynamics at 16psi.

Its been tough getting in and out of the car with the cage. Rehab has been helping alot!

Think so? Ive got your spark map in it right now with no knock & 11.3 AFRs I don't get why the fuck this thing broke.

thagr81 us 04-12-2010 05:03 PM

Ouch... Sorry to hear man. :(

NA6C-Guy 04-12-2010 05:07 PM

That blows. No pun intended. Now not even 6 speeds can be trusted! :giggle:

Going to rebuild, or replace?

m2cupcar 04-12-2010 05:11 PM

Spinning the inside tire under throttle and then having it grab isn't so good for the driveline either. Add to that stiffer/solid driveline bushings and an upgraded clutch and the driveline gets even more abuse.

I made 233whp on the Mustang at 11psi, 282whp at 16psi. If you're running 16psi, you're making at least 275whp, maybe more.

wayne_curr 04-12-2010 05:32 PM

Didn't watch it a second time, but was that on a downshift?

hustler 04-12-2010 08:04 PM

in soviet russia, transmission blows you.

i think his 6 speed when from abuse! shit happens and the 6 speed swap is still a more affordable option than going with Quaife kits.....thats pricey.

TurboTim 04-12-2010 09:45 PM

1. Sorry to hear about the trans Nick. Damn.

2. I love the beginning of your video, with the google earth and nice shots of your car. Nice touch.

3. You're making a lot more than 250rwhp.

4. Why does your car sound like it has a supercharger? I hear a lot of drivetrain whine. I dunno if that could be part of it?

5. I also really really need to track my car but I'm too much of a weenee. That looks like sooo much fun.

hustler 04-12-2010 10:35 PM

#4: this is what the rear end sounds like with no interior. Johnfag's car with the Cusco diff sounds like a box full of bolts and a blender going down the street.

Machismo 04-13-2010 08:48 AM

I bet it's still quieter than mine... :bowrofl:

Paul's car doesn't sound like that and the Machine is fully stripped too.

turotufas 04-13-2010 09:51 AM

Damn that stinks. Good luck with the rebuild.

Last year we had a guy blow 3rd when he put a tire off and stayed on the throttle then got it back on to the pavement.

Can't see the video atm but anytime your doing that^^ its alot of load on the driveline.

TURNS101 04-14-2010 01:13 PM

After this weekend I am pulling my trans out and going to look into new syncros. My 2nd and 3rd feel like shit.

Anyone swap in a rx8 trans and rear end yet??

I have seen a few rx7 tranny swaps, but that's alot more work than i am looking to do. Hopefully some MSM gears will hold up to the abuse.

TURNS101 04-14-2010 07:24 PM

Yeah, i want to try and save for the quaife gear set. these 6 speeds wont hold the power I am going to shoot for..

I hope the syncros help it alot for the mean time..

Doppelgänger 04-16-2010 12:05 AM

I once blew a 5spd....and my 2nd gear sounded just like that...and when you'd hear those loud "clanks" while rolling in neutral, it would actually hang up and briefly lock the rear tires momentarily. It sucked.

The whine sounds like my car..and I have full interior....but I have the Beatrush rear PPF brace....the sound is awesome.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem with inside wheel spin doing autoX...though the lower speeds might not be as hard on the driveline as doing it in 4th gear. Never had that problem on the track though.

Pretty interesting thing to say, seeing as how there's not even close to enough data to say exactly how much a 6-speed will reliably hold before blowing up. TSB popped his, but I've been ragging on mine HARD for at least 2 years and it is still flawless inside.

GeneSplicer 04-17-2010 06:53 AM

Transmission soup anyone? I dread to hear that in my 5spd soon. SO, are the Quaife internals that FM sells seriously worth it on a 5spd, or just keep dropping in a 5 or 6spd? I mean, that's some freakin serious cash for the Q, but has it been proven for reliability, other than the name alone? Sucks you have to get your hands dirty again, but that's part of the fun right? :)
