[phenixmt] NA miata g60 supercharger

3 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone,

I'm Marc, 25 years old.

I came here to find some good informations to transform an atmo 1.6L 1991 miata to a supercharged version.

I started a rare project (maybe the only one in the world): install a VW G60 supercharger

I'm pretty close to the first start but I will need some tricks to tune it well (I got a MSPnP).

My Car:

What the engine look likes:

Interesting...how does a scroll-compressor supercharger compare to the more (Miata-)common Roots lobed compressor supercharger?

Welcome!

Something like this:

http://medias.forum-auto.com/uploads...gladeranim.gif

air enter by the top then exit by the middle.

It works at less RPM than a roots but the air volume is more important. (it must gives 10 psi)

silverlegacy 08-10-2011 05:37 PM

Interesting... what does the boost curve look like?

phenixmt 08-11-2011 03:20 AM

I don't know yet , I didn't start the engine for now.

I working on the oil feed for the G.

silverlegacy 08-11-2011 05:46 PM

What amount of boost are you shooting for?

golftdibrad 08-11-2011 05:48 PM

Wow, that is a pretty cool idea!

phenixmt 08-15-2011 04:27 AM

Hi folk!

First strart! Finally!

I didn't decide yet what I gonna do with the IAC hose

natedawg 08-22-2011 11:51 PM

That is a very interesting choice in a supercharger setup. Never seen someone put a g60 on a mx5.

phenixmt 09-01-2011 01:10 PM

First test drive yesterday.

Rev limiter set at 2500rpm for safety, I drive for 2 miles and everything seems OK.

The G supercharger give 7 psi at 2500rpm

Is that a joke?

Please, if you have something to say, be more helpful than this...

Thats awesome. How much hp is it going to make? Cool project for a 25 year old, I'm 21 and hoping to maybe ditch my mazda 6 soon and get a Miata. Hopefully turbo it.

Anyway, good luck on the build!

phenixmt 09-09-2011 05:28 AM

Thanks;)

The car won't go after 4000 rpm, I think its because of a lack of gazoline.

So, yesterday, I've installed 305cc injectors from Toyota Supra.

Road test this weekend.

richyvrlimited 09-09-2011 06:29 AM

That's a very tidy install you've done.

If you're getting 7psi by 3.5k, you're going to need much much larger injectors than 305cc....

Needs more pictures posting too

Braineack 09-09-2011 09:16 AM

Thing sound starved for air in the video when you rev it...did you plumb the supercharger backwards?

Well, I plan to install 600cc injectors but I found those used supra injectors for 50$ so I told to myself "why not, just try it for a while"
I want to go step by step ;)

For info,
my work is inspire by the Rotrex supercharger kit (the throttle is blown like a turbo kit, not like a Jackson racing kit).
So I've installed a dump valve which I can set up to regulate the pressure from 5psi to 30psi.

If I still got lack of fuel, I will shut down the pressure of the G60 with the BOV untill I buy bigger injector.

Picture of the actual look of the engine:

i didnt say fuel. i said air.

;)

I didn't mount it backwards. In the first video, the ilde wasn't set up good.

I don't think it's starving for air, listen my BOV... (too much noisy, I'm sick of it)
(10 days old video)

That is awesome. I was under the impression that those superchargers were fairly unreliable, is this true?

Unfortunately, yes. Here in Germany it is very popular to swap out g-chargers for Turbos because of reliability issues... So its a really unique and cool Project, just know that the g does not like hot shutdowns :crx:

All I know is that I owned one and I was going to put it on my NA saab 9k. Then everyone on the forum talked me out of it (sound familiar) and I just ended up getting a turbo Saab. It still fucked up. Damn my lead food.

phenixmt 09-10-2011 04:14 AM

I think, G superchargers are quite reliable untill you don't change the size of the pulley to increase its rotation speed.

I'm running the stock pulley currently.

Even it's less reliable, I not planning to make more than 10 000 miles/year :D

phenixmt 10-06-2011 03:57 AM

Update:

I got 10.5 psi at 4500rpm but my manifold air temp reach more than 210°F.
I'm planning now to install a intercooler before engine failure...

What would be a good air temp target?

richyvrlimited 10-06-2011 04:51 AM

ambient? ;)

FWIW my setup is a coldside MP62 now. i.e. I don't have an intercooler.

When on track intake temps hit way over 150degC (302degF), but no damage has been caused to the engine (I know this as I've recently pulled the head). The key is in proper tuning and timing retardation based on IAT's.

So 210F is quite cold really :-P

If you're really worried add a simple WI setup, that's what I plan on doing (just need to hook my on/off switch up to the MegaSquirt).

ambient is 77°F.

I got a Megasquirt PnP and in the logs, IAT sensor can go above 213°F :(

Last pic of my setup: (new dump valve because the other one has melted down)

I maxed out the sensor on my setup, maxed at 215 F. It would get HOTT when hammering on it.

richyvrlimited 10-06-2011 03:54 PM

My point is I've gone way WAY higher than you whilst working the car very hard, so asking as your tuning is good you'll be fine.

Having an IC will certainly help your power output mind
