Default Another "About time I De-noobed myself" thread

Since I've been posting on here a while I thought I'd better get around to this so here it is...

Name is Bill, I'm olllllld (ok 48) and I live in beautiful sunny Hayward, CA with my wife Eden. I work as a tech for a race prep shop here in the Bay Area, where I do restoration/fabrication/machine work on vintage racing cars from the 50's into the 80's. Our current mix of cars is mostly F1/F2/F3(000), Can Am, 2 liter FIA sports racers and Formula Juniors. We did just get in 3 Lemans/GTP cars though, the two Lola/Mazda T616's that were run by Busby/Knoop/Morton et al in LeMans C2 (and won in '84) and a Porsche 962. Other than the 962 we don't run anything with turbos so my turbo experience is fairly minimal. Lots of people to learn from on here from what I've seen (special thanks to Andrew/Savington and Nick/Snowboarder in that regard).

I have a '97 STO (Stuff Taken Off) that I have been PSTBO (Putting Stuff Back On) for the last year or so. Had a number of other sports cars over the years (owned ~42 cars total at this point...) and finally broke down and bought a Miata last summer to see what the fuss is about. Since then it's been some time spent just driving the car and seeing what I like and don't like, and now I'm in the "fixing what I don't like" phase.

Currently the car has a Fidanza flywheel, Clutchnet clutch, 4.10 Torsen, HDHBSDD rollbar, FM front swaybar, Corbeau seats and Pyrotect harnesses, Energy Suspension Poly/custom offset Delrin bushings and FCM adjustable Bilsteins at 550/350. Future plans are swapping out the OP gauge for the stock earlier real gauge, and some sort of FI. Going back and forth with Andrew and Nick about what form the FI will take and how much is enough.

When I first got it in June '08...

About 2 weeks ago at a tech day where a buddy was sticking an alarm in the car...

I also do some photography, this is an artsy thing I did using PS and and an HDR program... neither of which I'm particularly good with yet.

Welcome.

Sounds like an awesome job! Probably hard to tell when you're at work and when you're at play.

Looks like a very nice car to start with...Torsen, rollbar, R-package lip, and a great color.

As far as planning a turbo setup:

1. Leave headroom everywhere.
2. Do it right...do it once.
3. It's NEVER enough. Well, until you're up there with Savington/hustler/JayL/rharris19 I imagine.

Good luck starting build. Looks like you've already got suspension where it needs to be as well.

Thanks! It would be the perfect job but for a couple things... nothing is perfect though and I do get to play with some damn cool cars.

The car was pretty nice to start out, low miles (74k) and came with the roll bar and Tein Basics (which I tossed... they were horrible). I added the Torsen (part of the factory Stuff Taken Off), the R package lip is Andrews old one that I repainted. As for 1,2,3, I agree completely on all 3. This started out with me right after buying the car getting a JRSC M45 thinking "well 50% more power will be enough", then by the time the suspension was to my liking and I was ready to start looking at the power end of things, I was fairly certain it won't be. I just have to determine my stopping point BEFORE I spend more cash. That way I can remain married AND do things once/the right way.

This made me chuckle.

We share a current dilemma.

I'm erring on the conservative side since power gets expensive quick, and I can wait for a killer setup when I graduate and start getting real paychecks. That and I value my marriage.

It's a shame when spending on your car and a good marriage become mutually exclusive.

They're not... it's the negotiations on what constitutes a reasonable budget that are the only issue (my wife is an accountant/auditor... sucks to be me sometimes). I am slowly bringing her over to the dark side though.
