Beginner to the Miata Scene! Hello!

Good Afternoon to all and happy belated new years! Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello! Excited to learn from all of you and have a miata that needs some TLC!

As a noob myself, with your title containing the word scene prepare to be flamed on. A fellow noob posted something similar in his title and it turned into a 3 page flame fest. Well good luck and don't be to thinned skin or you won't find this forum useful.

+1, I like this guy.

Welcome Ysleem! Post pics of your car, we are very visual people. Acceptable topics include anything related to your Miata, cat, wife/girlfriend/beard, or garage space (so we can be jealous)

scene.... lmao
Aside from the scene, Welcome!!! what do you have? i see the little pic in your sig, any full size photos? specs?

Haha thanks guys! Will do. just some background:

Recently acquired 1990 miata. Currently doing visual inspections and routine maintenance to the miata since she needed her fluids replenished and i needed an idea of how she is doing!
Dismounted the baggage mount and hopefully next weekend will get to giving her some fresh rear differential fluid. :) Also the boot's carpeting was removed as i have found mold on the interior of the car's boot/trunk and noticed a little condensation on the battery. So I am also in the process of cleaning that up! Yuck!
Removed the skid plate of the car to inspect radiator and any leaking fluids. Seems like everything looks good so far! Going to put together a project plan and hopefully after a couple weeks of extensive research and forum consultation I will be able to meet my target goals for this wonderful car!

Yes! I do happen to have some more check them out below:

I'll get more pics when I start actually pulling particular components! Very nice engine bay btw.

Check out the rain rail drains as they might be clogged, or I'm guessing the rain rail itself is cracked/leaking. Kinda a bastard of a job to replace it so hopfully its just the drains. One of those is generally where mystery moisture comes from.

Or leaking around the luggage rack thing. I had that on my NA and it drove me batty

ysleem 01-12-2014 03:16 PM

Yeah it might just be either of those. I'll take a peek and get back to you!

thanks! minus the fact that it still has AIDZ.... Im in the process of fixing that situation...
Only thing good about my bay is the clean factor. lol

for some reason your pics arent working.... might just be my computer though...

ysleem 01-12-2014 03:20 PM

Hey at least you have a clean bay! I have to get some rust out of mine from brake line leakage (probably due to age of the car) 325K on the chasis! Let me try to embed the image and see if that works. #noobproblems haha

Im thinking the Luggage rack.....
Mine leaked like crazy. Took me a while to figure out the cause. Some RTV silicon worked. It was a rigged situation, and not a fix, but it stopped leaking.

I was gonna offer to buy your luggage rack, but its the same one i have... i was hoping it was the lifted chrome basket style rack. lol I kinda want one of those.

Turns out there was some tape near the taillight assembly and after further investigation there is a large patch of rust on the inner part of the trunk. I will trust my instincts and go ahead and conclude that water is seeping in from there. Nice to know the issue...now to prevent it!

ysleem 01-12-2014 04:32 PM

Yeah those definitely look classy! I can see why you want one. Would look good against the red of the car. I think it might also be the luggage rack holes I think part of the project plan will be to eliminate that and eventually a wing

Even though it's not timely.... water intrusion is easy.. remove mount from trunk lid and seal around opening with either polyurethane (Sika, Vulkem) or good grade of silicone (GE or Dow) sealant and re-install. Need to use caution that it's 100% sealed around opening, without using too much sealant. On a car trunk lid, I would use 3m blue tape around the mount base so you can cut and remove any extra sealant which comes out which would be on top of the tape (cannot use any solvent which removes these caulk material that won't remove your paint finish).
