Talking Drifter ready to step up his game

Hey all,

I've got a '92 that I bought almost specifically to drift. I've also always liked and wanted a Miata, so I got two birds stoned at once. I've been doing it for 2 seasons now, and I feel like I've gotten comfortable to the point with the stock engine that it's time to bump up the power so I can hit the bigger turns at better speeds and maintain that speed.

I acquired a FM manifold and downpipe with exhaust, but I think I'm starting to lean more towards getting a full setup from kraken instead. I have a "budget" as in I'd like to keep things affordable where I can, but also need it to be reliable enough to sustain prolonged use at the track.

Obviously the best advice is always "join the Miata turbo forum" so here I am! 😅

aim for moderate power (sub 250whp) and put more money/time/effort/money into heat management IMO

That's somewhat the plan. I'm leaning towards a kraken top mount for the 1.6, with either a 2554r or the 2560r. I see lots of people saying they like to autox with the 2554r, and it has quicker low rpm boost, if even slightly compared to the 2560r. Goal right now is in the 180-200 range to keep it safer. Typically I run the car for several hours of on and off drifting.

Low RPM boost is for people who forgot to downshift.

Hey there! I may be interested in the FM Manifold if you are looking to part with it.

Hah, well I've also seen the "no one's ever said man I wish I had less boost" but for my uses, I'm not sure the 2560r fits the uses I'd want with lower boost.

FWIW, the 2560 loses almost zero spool compared to a 2554. When I was running a 2560 on my stock 1.8 at 9-10psi, all the boost was there instantly as long as you were around or above 4k rpm. You're above that anytime you're on track/drifting/trying to drive the car fast. General consensus is that the 2554 will really shine when you want to pass another car on the freeway but don't want to downshift.

Good luck with the project! It's gonna be a fun car. Where do you guys drift in northern UT? Does Utah Motorsports Campus have a drift area?

Fast, long decreasing radius in drift will drop rpm and you can't downshift without changing the attitude of the car, it's great to have powerband as low in the rpm range as possible to prevent a clutch kick.
