Default Good Morning

Hi.

Thought I ought to start a hello thread. Its a bit late, sorry, I've already been scouring this forum for a number of weeks for info to help me with my car.

My name is Steve, I'm 21 and I'm from Malvern, which is a smallish town 30 miles or so south of Birmingham, England.

I've had my 5 for almost a year now. I was originally looking for a british sports car, but the realities of this being my daily meant I ended up looking at 5s. With hindsight it was definitely the best option.

After using the mx5nutz UK based mx5 forum for a while, I ended up here. The UK forum is cool, got a nice community and obviously more relevant at times to me, but its really useful to be able to read up on the more tech side of things over here.

Being young, with little no claims bonus to my name, I bought a 1996 1.6 in red. This is a slightly detuned NA, putting out 90hp due to having the cams and low comp pistons from the automatic. I was after a bit more poke, so as of the middle of January I bought a GReddy kit, and fitted it.

With an lc-1 and a few tips I've picked up from here its running pretty well. Once I receive the Walbro pump thats in the post to me, then it should be running great. The stock pump just isn't quite supplying the pressures the AFPR is after.

Here are a couple of pics of my car, the day I bought it. Since then its had a damn good t-cut and polish, and then been driven every day and got dirty and fairly unloved looking once more.

And the reason its a daily is because of....

and...

Cheers for the helpful replies so far in my threads

Welcome Steve. Nice first post.

I would suggest you start reading on the MS and seriously consider that option. There are other British guys on this forum (some of those with real Knowledge about the MS).

BTW, nice bikes!

Welcome.

The lower compression will help you run a little more boost or timing than you would otherwise, or give you an extra margin of safety. Your choice.

Best of luck to you.

EDIT: I've got an Austin Healey Sprite I'll sell you.

Rafa, mega squirt is the plan, just gotta hold out for a couple of months to get some cash together. I've got a fairly good grounding in electronics, and my dads been designing analouge control systems for the last 25 years, so between us it shouldn't be too much of a problem!

I have to say owning the 5 has narrowed the enjoyment gap between bikes and cars quite some, that said I went out on the bike for the first time in weeks yesterday (salted roads ) and boy had I missed it!

Seeing as I'm hoping to run 6psi forthe summer without an intercooler I think I'll take the later option of extra safety, six shooter. I would LOVE a sprite! Malvern is quite a hot spot for classic cars, Morgan factory is in town, infact the guy who sourced my oil lines for my turbo who's workshop is just up the road is rebuilding a 1934 Aston Martin, that raced at LeMans, its one amazing bit of kit. Because of the locally famous hills its the sort of place people drive out on a sunday afternoon in their pride and joy.

They all keep tempting me, but the cost is just out of my reach right now for what would have to be a dry weather 2nd car. Also, I have to admit I'm failnig to see, aside from a little cool factor, what advantage most would give me over my 5.

Anyway, the Walbro didn't quite fix the problem, better but not solved. I've scavenged a set of 1.8 injectors, and they should see me properly safe for the short term while mega squirt is still only a plan and not a reality!
