Hello from Las Vegas!

Hello all, my name is Grant. I’m married, from Texas, living in Vegas. I’m in the Air Force and recently got my 1991 Miata.

i want to kick this off by saying I have never owned a miata before January of this year(but I always wanted one). So I’m a straight up noob to miatas. I am very willing to take advice as later on i’ll explain my planned goals for the car and what I hope to acomplish with it in the future. (P.S. even though I’m a huge noob, I’ve done a ton of research and reading, searches. Basically trying to soak up as much info as possible.)

SO, the car. 1991, M45, VMaxx, and “wheels and tires”. The reason I air quote that is because from the research I’ve done, they’re heavier than stock. A lot heavier. I also want to say that I haven’t chosen to do any of the expensive mods to the car, it was all done by the first owner from what I assume. So on to PICTURES!

I did the headlights myself. I’m okay with comments against them, but I feel like they were a good decision and I’ve only been flashed once. I really wanted to get rid of the barn doors because I thought they were super ugly and still needed good lighting at the time for vegas’ 215.

Future goals:
the first thing I plan on doing is getting a clutch that can handle the power that a kit such as the mkturbo kit would put out.
secondly, a standalone ecu that I can afford.
(follow this by selling my Supercharger and going NA to learn how to tune, possibly?)
third, exhaust.
fourth, good quality turbo kit.
fifth, wheels and tires.(wider and stickier compound? I live in a desert for gods sake)
??? profit ???

Please don’t be afraid to provide feedback. These goals of mine aren’t short term, since I don’t make much money as of right now. More “long term”, say a couple years?

thanks all!
Grant

Welcome to The Forum. We've got a few military and former military here. There are Decades of experience archived here in the Forum. The build threads tend to be a nice place to see cause and effect in action.

Thank you! I was hoping I could find some people in the vegas area, but I might try to find people when I move next. Question, are the pictures showing up? I'll keep reading, and use the search

Hey all, wanted to drop an update to this.
I still own the same car, and its still got the M45 on it. I've put 20k miles on it in a year, up to 118k on my odometer. I've learned a lot since I posted this and if I'd have read first I would have been able to make a better purchase, such as an NA8. For the future I plan on selling my 1.6, 5 speed, and VLSD. Then I'd buy a 1.8, 6 speed, and torsen. Acquire MS, possibly with a complete MKturbo kit. I actually have only had one issue, and thats my VLSD blew on a road trip(drain plug somehow left its home). I know theres things I should do in the short term, and I'll take care of those as I go. I plan on going stock for the next two years to stay safe.

Oh, I don't have any cats, but I have two dogs that act like cats.

For now I plan on reverting back to stock eventually, then once I get my reenlistment bonus(2 years), then I'm going to go all out. Until then I'll keep lurking.

Hey Grant. There are a few of us in the Vegas area and quite a few turbo cars. Facebook seems to be the way to go out here for meeting the locals. I'll have a spare open 4.3 in the next month, if you need to get moving. Given you're a 91 you'll have to source a driveshaft and such, but at least it gets you moving in the right direction.

I've got a source around here thats decently reliable so depending on how much you're selling it for i should be able to source the driveshaft and stuff. Right now I'm just driving with as much mechanical empathy as possible for the VLSD. I should've just sourced a torsen when i went to replace it. Right now I'm trying to get a stock airbox and crossover so that I can pull the SC off.

Keep on eye on the NVPickaParts, NA's go through their often, especially the up north one. Also the locals are part fiends and you'll have some luck finding those easily.

I have a friend with an already built MS, might require some verification that all was done right but its a heck of start. I'll PM you.
