Default Hello from Northern California

Hi guys, my name is Ryan. I picked up my red 1990 Miata during early May, the main goal of the car (basically the only reason I got it) is to boost it. I drove my friends N/A Miata a couple of times and just had such a blast driving it. Im 19 years old, I'll be 20 later this year, so I am still somewhat young. My knowledge of turbos is...well I get the basics of what they do, how they work. Things I dont know are the trim values, the benefits or disadvantages of a separated gases DP...the little things I have yet to pick up. Theres other things, but the more I read the more I start to learn

I am coming from the old muscle car scene. My other car is an original slant 6 1974 Dodge Dart, I tore it down to the body and started working my way back up, alot of custom fabbed stuff (its not your typical store bought chevy) I did all the engine work myself, it now has a 318 C.I. small block Mopar. The engine is cammed, .030 over 10.5 to compression weisco pistons, 340 CI crankshaft and rods...I also added disc brakes to the car...as well as a 1972 Dodge Dart front clip I am currently working on the rear clip as well. I had never tried body work until now, so far the left side is all straightened up and the marker lights shaved. ooh I also put 1972 wing window doors on it =D its a work in progress. That was my money pit...

The plans for the Miata...I would like to get forged internals and low compression pistons to handle a good amount of boost, I am hoping for 350+ whp. I was planning on using Megasquirt for the computing. Methanol injection is also in the drawing boards..head work would be down by our local machine shop. The turbo I was hoping to run would be a GT30 or so. I like the idea of the t3/t4 in the case if I want to go bigger I could. Clutch I am not sure as of yet, possible do a 1.8 LSD rear end swap or maybe out of an RX-7...The budget for this build is...well its gonna be expensive, but no car payments, rent is cheap, and so is Top-Ramen...lol so I think little by little I can do this, and being I have another car I can daily drive Im not really worried about yanking the engine out to do all the work on it. So far the only thing done to it besides a set of rear tires is a Hard Dog Street Miata Cage...and I also took the stock shifter cut about an inch off ran a die down it and made a shorty shifter =D works pretty well...

If my plans sound stupid just say so, and lemme know what you would advise to get said amount of HP...

Anyways thats my plan so far, I can see it in my head...I know how to TIG and MIG Im pretty good at fabbing up things, so I think it'll be one helluva ride.

Thanks for reading and a great forum,
Ryan

Welcome to the forum!

Glad you're here to learn, and sounds like you've got a good mechanical background.

Also sounds like one hell of a plan, and definitely doesn't sound stupid.

If I could go back I would have been patient and gone big the first time around.

If you don't quite hit those goals you won't be disappointed though. A 200whp Miata is hella fun, and a 250-300whp one is just stupid fast. There are a few guys here that are pushing more than that, but not many. JayL's build thread is the first one I'd look at. Hustler after that. Both are immaculate. Hustler is pushing 260 or so now, but capable of more.

Take care.

Good first post. I agree with everything that you stated except knock 100 of the HP total and you (and your wallet) will be more than thrilled. Or, go for it. The difference between stock and 250WHP is about $3K. The next RELIABLE 100 WHP is another $5-7K when you are REALLY all said and done.

**whipping sweat off brow** I am glad I didnt get yelled out for a bad first post lol...I read the first two stickies and wanted to make sure I got everything right..Yeah 350+ is alot but I got a good list of people I wanna run. Number one on the list is a Evo 9 that has cams, head work, and running straight e-85...he talks soo much ****. It did I think 10.5* or 11.5* at the track, I cant remember exactly what it was but...so that is what I am shooting for mainly...him. And its gonna be alot to get this thing to hook but I think some 8" drag radials may help =) kinda my grudge...and it would just be bad *** to have a car with that much HP and to be able to say that it does and throw it on the dyno to prove it

Welcome. Where in Northern Cali are you?

Stock turbo evo's usually run mid to high 11's with the setup you mentioned.

Im in Modesto. So I guess it would be central California, but everyone around here calls it northern California.. So I am not to sure. I asked and it was 11.5...on slicks, its a "stock" turbo that has been ported with a GT30 compressor wheel or something like that...its a nice car, but I wanna top it lol

Welcome, I'm in Monterey, which I guess is also central Cali.

Something sounds wrong with that EVO... My buddy Chris runs 10.3 on street tires, with a stock turbo, aftermarket cams, and WI. Pretty insane car, I drove it when it "only" made 430awhp and it was nuts then, now it does more.

That ABSOLUTELY doesn't make any sense. Sorry, but I demand more proof. On cali 91 I have seen the MOST 350whp on a stock turbo evo. With full meth injection maybe high 300's, but definitely not 430awhp and 10 second quarter mile times. Any vids/slips of this car? if there are, he is definitely a record holder. I have tuned a fair share of evo's around here and m/i and cams don't get you to 430whp..sorry

Some may think this is stupid....but to me this is a great way to build a car.

I built mine with a particular G35 in mind. This guy has a chip, intake/exhaust, and a cam, and ran mid 13s.

He THOUGHT it was fast. We still haven't had a real fair race (will need to go to the track), and so far he's beaten me out of the hole on on where we only raced halfway through second before calling it off, but in another roll race I walked him through third. We'll see.

Point is:

I spent every day of my 3 month build with one goal in mind, and didn't stop planning for a second. That meant no compromises to that goal. My goal wasn't as lofty, but neither was my budget. It helped me make decisions along the way that I'm glad I made, and would have otherwise opted for the easier route.

This MAY have been the way hot rods were built, with a nemesis in mind.

I know my grandpa used to battle his brother-in-law relentlessly in SCCA back in the day. They both ran MGAs, and while they started building their cars in the same garage they later got so competitive they wouldn't even open the hood for each other.

Go blow the doors off of that Evo.

Oops, looking back through his videos on streetfire he only ran a 10.93 on the completely stock turbo. Now he has something called a "FP Red w/ ported hotside" and runs the 10.3. Sorry I usually get his updates via text message so not a lot of details are shared, and I ASSumed he was still completely stock turbo. Still, he dyno'd 431 awhp and ran 10.9 on the stock turbo, not too shabby.

10.3 run:
Evo IX FP Red/Stock Block 10.30@132.70mph with clu - Car Videos on StreetFire

500+ dyno:
500+ AWHP Evo IX FP Red - Car Videos on StreetFire

10.9 stock turbo:
EvoIX 10.93@125mph STOCK TURBO - Car Videos on StreetFire

431 AWHP stock turbo:
Evo dyno 431whp 456wtq - Car Videos on StreetFire
