Default Looking For A Miata As My "Weekend Warrior"

Hey guys, I have an 07 Si coupe that I've had since 07. Long story short, I was going to boost it but many of us over at 8thcivic.com found out that the tranny is very weak. Considering I have 4 years left on my warranty, I'll keep that as my DD and not boost it. Here are a few pics:

I'm looking for a Miata as my 2nd car (not DD), but I'm undecided between the NA and NB. I like both body styles, but I'd rather go with the 1.8 over the 1.6, so the battle is still: NA vs NB.The way I see it, I'll be able to find an NB in better condition and with less mileage MUCH easier than an NA. But I figured you guys would know best. I don't need to boost the miata, but it will likely happen over (a very short) time. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

just because its a NB doesn't necessarily mean that is more mechanically sound! the only NA's that came with a 1.6L are the 90-93. 94-97 are 1.8L's. my personal preference is 94/95 because of the one simple thing that happened to 96+ (OBDII) which to me is the biggest PITA when it comes to FI. if your not worried about emissions then **** it, you got nothing to worry about!

RSX-S tranny mated to.... the K20 motor? or the miata motor? And how would hondata work (if I don't use the K20?)

rsx-s to the kdub motor, and hondata is by far the best engine management for k series i have ever used, if not u can buy the chip for any ecu....or at least most ecu's (i.e. s300, s200...so on so forth)

as for you miata choice? buy an na and swap in a 94-97 motor with a 99 head....win!

STFU noob.
it already has a variation of the dc5 transmission with an lsd so its even better.
hondata is great only cause the only other real option is aem which is not as good and more expensive. They have flashpro for these and not kpro anyways.
you can't chip the k series ecu's.
Only way to make real power on a k is to boost it, and thats expensive and pointless cause its FAILwheel drive.

Stop giving advice on either car. You know dick.

Boost Control Solenoid has really corrected the whole FWD problem. And was marcnugget talking about mating an RSX tranny to an Si motor? I'm strictly talking about Miatas at this point, which is why I am here. I can talk circles around you(marc) all day about k20 motors, but that's not why I'm here. Stick to the OP please

boost by gear definitely helps.
I wouldn't go as far as saying it "corrected" the problem.

Its kinda hard to correct a platform layout by limiting power in lower gears

But back to topic:

Don't listen to anything that dumbass marcmunugget has to say about miata's.
if you get an na get a 94-95 (best imo) if an nb there are advantages to every year. The 99-00 head is known to flow better than all others, while the vvt in the 01+ years has been getting ridiculously more popular lately since people figured out how to control it and aid the motor yield more power/torque.

Start with a 1.8 on 10psi using a 2560-2871 sized or similar turbo. that should get you into the mid 200s whp.
Start there.

Then you can go up/down depending on what you like.
Let me tell you, a 250whp miata is damn quick and fun on the street.

94+ has the larger differential as well.

94-95+99 head+turbo= win,win,win!

Nice SI, that is such a nice dd.

What is your budget?

A solid lower budget build would be 94/95, megasquirt, suspension mods, diy turbo kit. Make around 230-260whp.

No, 94+01VVT head + turbo = WIN

Go with a 94 as your starting point. It offers everything good about the 1.8 platform and it guarantees that you will not have OBD2. The 95 also are decent but you have to make sure you get one of the first half of the year cars.

That's my plan, I want a 94-95 OBDI, and 250whp sounds great as a starting point.

Even more reason for the 94-95!

Thank you very much, it's taken a long time for it to come out this way, but I finally love it! My budget is up in the air right now actually. I want to get a good Miata to start, then grab some wheels, and coilovers. Then is time for boost! I am on the lower end of money though. I'll be selling my turbo kit from the Si to use for the Miata. I'm definitely looking for a 94/95 OBDI, suspension is a must, DIY turbo kit I am always down for (can you post links?) and what is megasquirt, I assume a tuning method?

I'll be running the 94-95 OBDI as my starting point. Thanks for all of your help guys!

Touche.

You are correct sir.

Yes you could definitely go this route, the 99 head is just a little less work and an easier install but the VVT head will be more responsive in lower RPMs and yield slightly more torque as well.

How much would it run to install either a 99 or 01 head? Is the cost really worth the result?

Short answer: Search.

Long answer: 500-4000$ and it depends on what you think is worth it. To many, yes.

Megasquirt is a stand alone ecu option for those of us with NA body style cars. It is cheap, fully tunable, and awesome.

Well really, 94 bottom end + forged internals + VVT Head + 99 Intake Manifold + MS3 = WIN. But that is well past what he is probably looking for right now

o.O

Megasquirt is an option for any car.

Megasquirt is an easy option for 90-00.

You can get a MSPNP for 90-97.

Brain can make you a DIYPNP for 99-00 and can make other setups too.

That means it's an option for early NB's as well.
